Tell the Truth Friday- Commanders @ Packers Edition

Defense was meh, offense was abysmal. I get that it's hard to do the right things with a lot of pressure, but I don't think that's all there is to JD's issues. He just doesn't look the same and didn't against the Giants as well. He seemed indecisive with the ball, slower than before (didn't they say he put on weight?), and was also inaccurate when he had time. It could just be rust and he needs time to get back in the groove, but he looks more like a rookie now than he did for most of last season.

I think Jayden is going to be fine. Thursday night on the road is just a tough ask for any team. Packers defense might be the best in the league now with Parsons. He was absolutely everywhere.

Can we find a real kicker for once??

Also, our offense was pretty bland. Not sure if that was Kliff or Jayden , but I’m going to go with blaming Kliff for last night. Regardless, the run game was awful and Jayden was running for his life a good bit. Was getting knocked around too. It’s an off game, it happens. Think they rebound real well next weekend. Also I think the Giants have a pretty nasty defense too and we will see them wreck havoc on some teams this season.

Terry is rusty too.

The good though: Amos and Deebo.
Deebo is an absolute monster and strong as an ox.

I don’t know if putting on the extra weight was a good idea for JD5. He looks slower than last year and may be taking more hits because of it. I kind was thinking it last week, but it was really noticeable to me tonight.
Really hard to say. I think GB may genuinely have the fastest and best D in the league. Still early though.

We needed to control the clock, in fact I was banking on that keeping us in the game and is why I actually picked us to win. Defense was flat, offense out of sync, it's early though. GB was a playoff team last year in a tough division, they added more parts, we are now reminded the Giants they are not.

I put this one in the "they pay the other guys too" catagory.

Short week. On the road at a notoriously hard place to play.

Against one of the Super Bowl favorites this season.

There are things that did concern me though - rebuilt line allowed a lot of pressure, Terry was a non-factor, some bonehead penalties, Lattimore looks like he has regressed from last week.

Now we have a mini-bye to self-scout and fix things.

Worried about the injuries though - especially on offense.

The truth is the Packers are really good. Their defense is dominant and so far they have shut down two of the most explosive offenses from last year. They have the talent and have the game plan and have excited to near perfection through 2 games.

I like watching Thursday night football, but I hate seeing my team play. The worst offensive performance of the regular season last year was on Thursday night against the Eagles. I wonder if Quinn and more specifically Kingsbury don’t know how to prepare in that short timeframe. I thought the team looked lethargic early in the game and it only slightly got better. Early on a WR screen, the DB beat both Brown and Ertz to make the tackle behind the line. It just didn’t look like those two wanted to block. The DB certainly wanted it more. It felt like every replay they showed, no WR were getting open. Not until late in the game when the Packers played prevent.

And while I’m on the coaching, they have to give Connerly help. He was abused last night and leaving him 1 on 1 with Parsons was a failure by the coaches. Connerly got away with a bunch of holds and the Packers still were beating him. If he is going to get to where he needs to be, they have to give him some help.

Lastly, kickers suck. Those guys should just go play soccer. Just go for it every 4th down. Quinn messed up at the end of the half kicking. It didn’t hurt him, but it was a mistake and as others said above, it went away from his aggressive mentality from last year.

And I chuckle when long time fans leap off the cliff on a young Qb when they should know better given this club’s history with QBs.
5 may become a franchise Qb but he’s not there yet.
Leap off a cliff? Hyperbolic much? 🤣

Truths:

1. Packers are probably a top 5 team. Playing them at Lambeau on 3 days rest was always going to be hard. That defense may be a top 3 unit, and suffocated both our offense and Detroit's in the first two weeks.
2. Jayden had a bad game, but how much can he do when 2-3 dudes are in your face before you complete your drop back? Pressure sabotaged the entire offense.
3. Kliff got Klowned. Leaving a rookie playing his second game 1v1 against maybe the best pass rusher in the NFL was certainly a choice. Losing Bates early hurt.
4. Offense is out of sync. It's early but they need to get their heads out of their asses.

And finally, we're 1-1. There's 15 games left. We played a top 5 team and got beat down, so go get better. On to the next.

I just wanted to say something that people and front office may not agree with but it needs to be said and probably deserves its own thread.

Kicker position is so underappreciated in this league. You see role players drafted in front of them. Heck, Kicker rarely do get drafted before 6/7th Rds. Kicker is responsible for making Points on offense. The outcome of many Superbowls have depended on them. Now argument may be made that it is so hard to find and keep reliable kickers but so is every important position if you think of it. I don't know what stops teams from drafting a kick high based on college stats and related info. A consistently good kick takes off a lot of stress on Offense and coaches.

I would have like the score to be 27-24 instead of 27-18. Yes we would have still lost, but for perspective, mindset on the field would have been that we are so close and we must try all out effort to win on last drive, which was obviously not the case last night.

I am sorry if this has already been discussed.

To this point. They get the Raiders are home and Falcons on the road. If they win those two games, they are 3-1 and we would all agree 3-1 to start the season would make us happy.

Truth is,,, I stopped watching when we went down 24-10. More truths: moving O line pieces in the off-season might take some time to come together during the reg season. We can't cover big tight ends. We still cannot pressure the QB with our 4 man front.
Amos is going to be good, and so is Bill. Terry was m.i.a. and play calling was head scratching.
That's all I got today. Hail!

The Packers are just better than us on both sides of the ball. The defense was okay but they kept getting cooked by Kraft. I kept expecting some sort of adjustment but nope, he was looking like the prime Tony Gonzalez out there. The offense was just bad. The Packers pass rush was all over us and there seemed to be no change in strategy to attempt to mitigate that. JD5's accuracy still seems off. The Packers, like we did against the Giants last week, let their far out matched opponent hang around too long. The game wasn't a close as the score indicated.

truth Fridays
1. Team got out-coached and out played. some of the in game decisions were border line idiotic. No adjustment
2. Im a dumbfounded by some of the decisions by this FO, some really bad ones...
- like trading for Latimore who looks completely done.. when he is not getting smoked by back up Wrs, he is getting holding and pi penalties.
- Drafting an LT and forcing him to play RT.. Conerly looks 2 steps slow, completely lost. and thats against anyone rushing off the right side. He is the Latimore of the Oline
3. Ive never seen JD rattled until last night... errant throws, bad reads, he had no answers. Ill chuck it up to one bad day but i am seeing some of the same issues from last year (slow reads, late throws, wrong reads on zone runs, etc) he also looks gimpy... this 10 day rest is badly needed

Its a wake up call that this team and FO needed.. glad it came early. Lets see how they respond... i have faith

Lattimore wasn't great al at all and made his share of mistakes...but after watching some film from last night Im seriously questioning some of the defensive schemes.

I think this is a combination of Green Bays defense being really good and in mid-season form and our offense not getting any playing time in the preseason, then getting a little complacent after playing the giants as they put up no fight. Then a short week with zero actual practice time on the road in GB . . . all of that adds up to a poor showing. Now, they have a mini bye to work on and correct some of their issues and to get a little healthier. Then they have some winnable games that get hopefully allow them to get the ship right!!

This is interesting because this team just paid Terry McLaurin more than the entire Packers WR and TE room yet we saw which was wide open all game long.

I mean Kraft had so much room on just about every reception of his you'd think that his first name was Space or Invisible. Dudes just refused to cover him. Does his smell that bad or something?

Yeah, I’ve been surprised by takes from folks saying the defense was good. It was definitely not good. Jordan Love was more meh, than the defense was good that’s for sure.

Little pass rush and corners always trailing.

It’s fair to say the offense did nothing to help them by not being able to stay on the field. But I’m not walking away from this one feeling good about the defense.

I think it is time for Allegretti to sit for Wylie. Nick was solid first half of last year and then fell off as the season progressed. That has carried over to this year. Wylie is the better athlete

Quinn and Kingsbury need to be taken out to the toolshed for putting Ekeler at 30/31 out there in a lead role in 2025 eating up carries.

History showed his reps needed to be managed and now we have a problem.

We traded Robinson, fine.

But let’s not go into a nationally televised game and give the only back that can attack the edge in Merritt 4 or 5 carries total for the game.

Merritt with 4 carries and McLaurin with 2 catches just about equates to a loss given how the skill position depth chart looks on this team.

I also don’t think we are using Lane’s speed in any meaningful way on offense either. A couple of grabs for short yardage in traffic but little chance at RAC down the field.

Now with the injuries to Ekeler, Brown and others Kliff has to start using some of that younger talent NOW and not wait until Week 8 or 9 as it appears we intended to do.

Last question - does Ben Sinnott do anything?

Evidently he can’t steal any reps from a 35 year old possession receiver in Ertz and he can’t play special teams without almost getting his punter killed in protection.

This guy looks like a Rivera draft pick.

I think Latimore was taking a lot of grief on the broadcast last night, and i am not sure how much was on him. I am not sure how he is supposed to follow a wrong across the formation and be tight to him at the snap. I saw they corrected it on a later play where he passed off the wr to the cb on that side and took the inside wr. On the first 2 times, is that really on him or the scheme?

I thought we did little to apply pressure until way to late. Almost as bad as giving all day to throw, we didn't get in the throwing lanes either. We gave a lot of time and space making their O look as good as ours looked bad.

Think about the lack of space JD had to move and how there always seemed to be men closing the lanes that were there. That also started making him stop stepping into throws too. I think that led to at least one ball in the dirt...all the things our d was unable to do to their O.
