I have noticed that the number of ‘guests’ is way down now.
 
Well unfortunately the measures we have put into place to stop bot attacks also reduce some web crawlers. Hopefully no real humans are getting blocked.
 
It could be the beginning of the offseason doldrums. It could be the constant verification delay.
 
Every time I open the site, it checks if im human. I've also noticed my screen will freeze temporarily when someone posts a Twitter posts. 🤔 Not sure why it'd do that but I've never had issues like that before on my phone. Just figured id throw that out there for the mods in case its pertinent.

If you get stuck in a cycle where it keeps trying to confirm you are ‘human’ just close out your browser and come back in fresh. This usually resolves the issue.

I expect it to be slow in February then pick up as tamper time nears.

We should get a little lift when a few position coaches are hired and when we announce real soon the Tunsil extension (🤞)!

What I am referring to is unregistered members. Prior to recent technical events and changes the number of ‘guests’ perusing the board was consistently about 20x or more than the number of members. I guess that could be due to this dead period but I suspect it is something else. As Boone pointed out, maybe it is web-crawlers being caught in the Cloudfare net. 🤷🏻‍♂️

As this moment the number of members active is 14 and guests are 27.
 
We have ‘Limited Viewing’ turned on. That is likely the reason, not the time of the year or the Cloudflare bot settings.

Limited viewing lets a visitor view 5 pages. If they want to see more they must register. We don’t keep it on coNataly just occasionally as it generates registrations/new members.
 
And the Cloudflare bot setting we have it on at the moment definitely blocks many web crawlers as they too are bots - that is a known downside.
 
Just as an experiment, I have turned limited viewing off …if you guys want to keep an eye on guest numbers and report back…
 
I will watch the numbers after chair yoga and before bingo.

I have personally gone back and forth over limited viewing. There was a time when I felt it was useful to encourage membership and activity. Times have changed since the recent influx of active members since the demise of ES. From my completely amateur perspective…the vast majority of registered members are not active posters anyway, so I no longer see a true benefit to forcing the hand of registrations outside of building up the number.
 
Yeah, I have mixed feelings although there is no doubt it does spark registrations and no one can become an active member if they aren’t a member first. But I’ve never liked restrictions of any kind so I hear you.
 
Boone question about the human check by Cloudfare. I know when we turned it off last time we were hit again by a DNS attack. I'm wondering how we might know it's ok to turn that verification off again. Does Cloudflare provide reporting on how much it's blocking each day?
 
I don’t think they can tell us how many are attempting access and getting blocked and/or when to turn off max protect. We will just have to turn it off and see.

And honestly, on the chance that it is someone with a grudge who is paying someone to launch attacks, we or a lot shouldn’t discuss in the open.

Throughout the day today the guest to member ratio has been a pretty consistent 2.5 to 1. Far below normal.
 
I can get on, on my phone. But I can’t get in on my tablet. It just gets stuck in the checking if I’m a human (for the past week).
