Super Bowl or Branding/Name Change?

I know this is getting ahead of things, but…

Wouldn’t it be fascinating if the Super Bowl was a match-up of one team that openly celebrates Native Americans vs another team that was forced not to?
I thought about that, too.

What a conundrum the NFL has created.

Would be quite interesting if the NFL and their sponsors had their hypocrisy directly on display especially when the Chiefs fans do their tomahawk chop and drum beating…

Here's the reality we all know: It was about NAs on the surface only. It was all about Dan Snyder.

But also on the hypocrisy front: I do love "End Racism" in the end zone as they do the chop and wear head dresses yadda, yadda, yadda. All the crap everyone says is racist.

Here is another reality: We would have to go through a prolonged, 2013-14 level collapse to change the name at this point. I don't know about anyone else, I don't want to relive that level of crushing disappointment again.

I'll say it one more time.

The ring.

The ring.

That's all that matters.

First post from a new guy. Thanks for having me.

Short answer: The Ring

Long answer: We won 3 Super Bowls and 2 NFL Championships as the Redskins. That did not prevent us from being forced to change our name and brand, not once but twice. If we win one as the Commanders- and I am praying that we do- we can still find a better name.

Change is a constant in the NFL. The Rams may have always been the Rams. But they have resided in 3 different cities, one of them twice.

Win the Ring and find a better name. We have a long history with more to come. The name nonsense has already added a quirky chapter to it. We can add a bit more to improve what is to come. HTTR.

I have felt that winning cures alot of ills. I’m not a huge fan at all of the name Commanders but I’ve always said that once we starting winning on a normal basis nobody would be “as concerned” or “care” as much. I highly doubt the ppl of Nashville were overly thrilled at the name Titans, but they were at 1 time a winning team year in and year out… so the name wasn’t a huge deal I bet. Having said all that I would definitely like a better name, but if you’re asking me a new name or a SB trophy I’d take another SB trophy hands down…. even my wife mentioned this morning, just think your were on your last year of High School when they won their last…. If it would be another 34yrs you will be 85…. I don’t know of the Good Lord has me planned to live another 34 years…. So I want another Trophy 🏆

Some mixed feelings about being the number one jersey seller, but I'll take the big picture view that the fanbase is getting healthy again... and that's good to see.

Will be interesting how it plays out. Don't get me wrong, I'm cheering HARD for a win tomorrow and can't stand the THOUGHT of potentially losing to Philthy...but I think the jersey sells will go through the ROOF if they correct the branding, in addition to what's happening on the field.

💯 % agree… with the sell already seemly going up just this season along with last weeks win in MoTown and the renewed vigor for this team whether or not that’s the normal jumping on the bus riders or the come back kids type fans that are buying them I too think a continued success of on the field would only make a new branding once again go “through the roof” as you stated

I actually have the opposite belief. This run by the team will probably close the door on a name change.
This is correct. Brands and the perception people have towards them can and do change with time. For instance, the Redskins brand itself was a Cadillac at one point, only to be transformed into a laughingstock under the previous owner. People are saying that Commanders will be forever tied to Satan himself. If you become a consistent winner/contender, and sprinkle in a few Super Bowls in the next 10 years, nobody is going to remember him. If Jayden wins like a Mahomes or Brady and proves to be that level of player, then the Commanders = winners and nobody ever once considered Satan himself a winner.

I agree. I reluctantly agree. Doesn't mean I wouldn't prefer a name change. But as John Riggins said, which I quoted earlier,

I don't want anything to do with it. For now, anyway. Maybe I'll change. Maybe I need a little more time.

“ I think the jersey sells will go through the ROOF if they correct the branding”

Not sure how much more through the roof they can go coming off Washington’s best sales day ever and Daniels’ jersey being the hottest on the market.

Daniels IS the rebrand. While the mindset here may be favorable to a rebrand, I’m thinking that is vastly outnumbered by the success bandwagon fans that only care about being seen in the hottest gear in the league.

Daniels IS the rebrand.
Period.

I think Voice_of_Reason may have said it a couple of times, but it bears repeating - for a lot of people, it's just a name, and team names are often just blah names; even if you think Commanders is more "blah" than most, the "blah" scale is what it is. Boone did make a great point though - why did the ownership kind of string us along, it would have been better to just close the door on it. Those two takes (and the quoted one above) seem to sum up the situation best in my mind.

So, regardless of mistakes in the past, hopefully the ownership sends clear signals at some point. Maybe some of this was Jason Wright's doing too; not trying to blame him, but I think he could have been in the mix on those discussions. Not very useful conjecture, but just throwing it out there.

I think the ownership has been smart in keeping the door open. If there really was a fanbase revolt against the name with no coming back then you have to give yourself room to alter course. Even if the plan is to replace the name, you don't tell anyone until you have your ducks in a row. You want to do this right especially after it's been done wrong twice and the fan base has suffered through both cluster-effs.

So, I don't think we'll hear anything until they are ready to make a move.
