Super Bowl or Branding/Name Change?

I would not mind Braves or Warriors except that with Braves, we will find ourselves back in trouble. With us gone, the mob is turning their attention to KC and Atlanta.

My suggestion is that we copy what Miami University of Ohio did. We go with Redhawks. It avoids anything Native American, yet it is only a change of 1/2 of a word. And we can preserve much of our traditions:

  • We can bring back the R logo helmets from the Lombardi era.
  • We can use our scripted Rs made famous by Joe Gibbs.
  • The fight song will flow better.
  • And we can have a red hawk fly around our new stadium when we beat the Eagles (yes that is a joke, sort of).

IMHO that is the best option. Doc Walker also touted it. Redwolves or Red Storm (a la SJU) would also work.

I'm not necessarily married to the Native American theme. I really like when a team mascot/logo/name is directly related to something unique to the city/region in which it is located. Some good examples of this type of branding are:

-Lakers-When the team was located in Minnesota, this was a very apropos name. Minnesota is "The Land of 10,000 Lakes".
-Patriots-New England figured largely in the American Revolution and the colonial theme is on target.
-Steelers-Pittsburgh was a center of steel production when the name was adopted
-Thrashers-This now defunct NHL franchise located in Atlanta was named for the Georgia state bird (which has a menacing look)

So, I guess one could argue that it was in this general region (Virginia) that European settlers had some of their first encounters with native tribes. I can go along with this rationale.

But, Washington, D.C. is known more as the center of government for the United States. The Capitals and Nationals have based their names on this fact, and the Senators did in the past. Would choosing a name associated with the federal government be a more appropriate way to go with the Commanders next name? Some suggestions: "Founders" or "Presidents".

"Red Wolves" ain't bad. The Red Wolf's range did once include the eastern seaboard, though now it is only located in a small area of North Carolina.

Neither one of those teams are going to change their name anytime soon.
The only difference between a Brave and a Chief is rank.
Not saying that's the direction they'll go.

The fight song will flow better.

I don't think they should do anything with the fight song. Even with Redhawks, you'll still have the people singing Hail to the Redskins drowning out the three people that actually know the words to HTTC, the same way they do now.

How about the Washington Privates. Our logo could be a fig leaf

If a bad brand with the franchise's first generational QB could set a sales record, then I'm pretty sure a better brand with the same great player (and presumably with even more established and sustained success) could surpass that record.

Daniels + Braves/Warriors + logos that resemble our heritage + sustained winning = massive merchandise sales

I don’t disagree that there may be a short term bump in jersey sales but I certainly wouldn’t expect record breaking. In my limited circle, the majority of jersey buyers made their purchase based on the name on the back of the jersey not the front. If JD changes teams, they buy his jersey in a different color. If he gets hurt and flames out, they move on to the next shiny object.

And I certainly don’t think you make franchise altering decisions based on perceived temporary gain. If we’re being honest about it, with the (hopefully) new generation and bandwagon fans coming on board, the old guard (dare I say “extreme”;) Skin’s fan is becoming more and more a minority.

Besides, regardless of what we may be told or want to think, this is not a fan driven league. It’s a corporate driven league. How many individual jerseys have to be sold to make up for the business that writes a million dollar check to have their logo put on urinal piss cakes?

I know I’m a voice in the wilderness here so whatever floats your boat to get through the offseason.

For the record though, I would welcome the name back but count me as not holding my breath. Bullets, not coming back. Indians, not coming back.

No one here is saying it is.
Numerous people here saying " Redskins isn't coming back. "
No one here is saying it is.

I think a lot of people would just like something that connects us to our first 88 years, and makes things a little more cohesive with all of our former players, who never played for the Commanders.

If KC and the Braves can use all the imagery they do surrounding that theme, we shouldn't have any problem with doing the same with Warriors. And if the Braves and Seminoles can do what they do (including FSU having someone ride a horse in the stadium in full Native American gear, carrying a spear), we should also be fine with Warriors or Braves. Jerseys for Warriors could be Native American or military/feds themed, with the other as part of alternate jersey themes. I'm still searching for a preference; just don't like the C word

I've stated often, I love RedWolves, Wolves, Warriors more than the other options, but I did think of another idea the other day.

While I doubt it ever would happen, what about Washington Warpath?

Fair enough and edited to reflect.

I kind of like leaning into the “going Commando” aspect of the name. Not that anyone needs an excuse. Free balling for the win after all.

Ya know... It's not that far a leap from "the 'skins" to "going commando."

After putting up with the crap of the past 30 years this is no contest - the damned ring.

I want to see Mara sitting there having to wince when Washington gets the trophy presentation.
