Super Bowl or Branding/Name Change?

Ring or name change?

Sigh….

You are really asking if a multi-billion dollar franchise can chew gum and walk at the same time?

Ridiculous.

Keep singing Hail to the Redskins after every score, every win.
Keep repping Chief Two Guns.

As for me and my family, we will proudly call them the Redskins and will until we are no longer here.

Damn kids….😛

But, is there at least one better than Commanders ?
I don’t really think so. I think all the ones I’ve heard are bad. I personally hate Red wolves.

I think at best we’d go from one bad name to another bad name. The only difference is this one wouldn’t be picked by Wright and Snyder.

Maybe that matters to some. It doesn’t matter to me.

But I’m in the minority. I just don’t care unless the old name comes back. Which it won’t. So I don’t care. Shrug.

As a soon to be 50-year-old third generation fan, I totally get the sentiment. The name change hit me hard. I felt like I was in mourning the loss of a dear family member and then kicked in the teeth at the funeral with this ridiculous name.

However, I’m taking the Super Bowl ring not so much for me, for my kids. I was their age during the glory years. This season has been special for them. I can see it in their faces. I have already promised them that if we pull off the shocker and make it to the Super Bowl - the whole family is flying to my grandparents back East to have the best surprise Super Bowl party ever, with the two biggest 90-year-old Redskin fans I’ve ever known.

It burns me up that the Chiefs can get away with their NA stuff, including having the tomahawk chop broadcast before every national game. (Guess Susan Harjo doesn’t watch the AFC.) If Danny boy had been smart, he could’ve seen the way the wind were blowing and set something up with a NA tribe a la the Seminoles and FSU prior to his hand being forced. But he didn’t and it’s not fair, but that’s life.

At this point, I would be ok with keeping the name. I would only ask a return to the classic uniforms. Someone else mentioned it, proper stripes, yellow face mask, get rid of those abominations that are the white jerseys - and then maybe, just maybe, find a way to bring the old logo back for throwback jerseys once a season. That would satisfy me.

Give me the ring as well. Control what you can control.

As soon as our name became a political focus and it impacted the financial health of our team....it was over. As much as Snyder was an a$$, I don't blame him for going for about as bland a name as possible. I know any of us would of done the same thing so we stop losing money. They will always be the Redskins and as soon as the right people get back in power and the logo becomes avail again to reproduce in NFL form....it will always be around our stadium and throughout the country. It won't go away.

But, for some reason, I go back to the 80's when everyone was in turmoil about Michael Jackson and Prince. The issues with their life styles and music and whatever....didn't matter to them. They pretty much laughed all the way to the bank and won all the awards for what they did. I am starting to really like the W and the name apparently isn't stopping us from winning and promoting our team.

Control what we can control.

I wish someone would do a true deep dive case study one day of this rebrand that really takes the time to understand the fanbase demographic.

Where this has always been tricky is I think our fanbase is a unicorn and completely different than any other sports team in history where I would imagine nearly half (this is where I wish someone would do true research) of the fanbase has zero ties to the geographic area and are instead fans of the team BECAUSE of the honoring of Native Americans. I speak from that perspective myself - I've never lived near DC a day in my life, but I've been a diehard since I was 5 because I have multiple Native American ties in my heritage on all sides of the family.

So while I think many who live in the DC area are fine with whatever brand, as long as we win, that's what matters.... There's a whole population of fans on the sidelines that will never truly come back as a supporter/financial support/buy tickets/merch/etc. until it's corrected. I'm one of them - I typically buy a minimum of one jersey a season and I haven't bought a SINGLE piece of clothing that has the Commanders logo, nor will I EVER if it sticks.

It's a rock and a hard place because I also don't think "Redskins" itself will ever come back, nor should it because then the controversy never goes away. Warriors, RedWolves, Wolves all solve both sides of the equation - you can honor the past, kill the controversy forever, and finally get the overwhelming floodgates of the ENTIRE fanbase back on board.

Do that + give us RFK back + let's keep up what's currently happening on the field to compete at the highest level?!? Good God Almighty, this will be a fun next decade.

As someone else mentioned, there is no all out "better" name than the Commanders. People are doing to dislike whatever another new name would be. It is a lose lose. I personally hate all the stupid "red" names people have come up with like Red Wolves or Red Hawks. Those sound worse than the Commanders sounds to me at this point. You won't please everyone unless it goes back to Redskins and the chance of that happening is basically 0%.

To me, as a life long diehard 43 year old fan, the name does not matter at all at this point to me. As long as they are winning and fun to watch, it's all I care about. I didn't plan on buying any Commanders gear and hadn't since 2018 with a Salute to Service hoodie back then, but this year I have bought jerseys as well as the Salute to Service hoodie, as well as 2 last years breast cancer awareness hats. And it's because I am no longer embarassed to walk around in my gear (and I still did it prior, it was just old Redskins stuff I was not supporting Danny boy anymore) and now I'm proud to wear it, having been through the tough times of the past decades and now having this incredible fun time to be a fan.

I actually had this conversation with my brother on Sunday when he mentioned Steve Czaban said he will never be a fan again unless the name goes back to Redskins. I am like who fucking cares? It's just a name. The team is the same. Get over it and root for them.

It's all just so silly and people are so butt hurt over it.

To pass on a Lombardi for the possible chance of a name change just blows my mind. I'm not even sure how you can call yourself a fan if you do that, but hey, to each their own.

Cool, you do you. But for every 1 of you old timers trying to "make a statement" by not buying any Commanders gear, there are dozens of younger people in the new generation running out to get Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin jerseys. I think they will take the new blood over the 1 pissed off old timer.

You all remind me of Al Bundy reliving his glory days at Polk High. You want the Redskins back playing in RFK like they were 30 years ago. It's time to move on and it may not happen, especially the name change.

When I moved west of the Mississippi I met two Skins fans from OK, both NA, who were Skins fans for the very reason you mentioned. Neither had even ever been to the DMV. We know the name is never gonna come back, but the most beautiful logo in NFL history has an outside chance. But it is going to take an overwhelming and loud clamor from the NA community and that still may not be enough to override the detractors and their media allies.

I guess we geezers better work fast 'cuz we'll be dead soon and then it'll be all over
I hear you man. What’s the point in trying. I mean those ‘you geezers are out of touch and need to get over it cause us young know it alls have it all figured out’ posts are just too persuasive.

Well to be fair, there's a good chance that they may be back playing in RFK a few years from now :D

My musket's loaded and I'm ready for battle. Fortunately, Josh Harris is geezing too, so we got a chance. There aren't many of us. But forty men together can't lose.
Musket? You need to check the new fangled flint lock!

If they do go back to RFK, they better hire engineers to make sure the stands jump like a bouncy house.

It doesn't have to be Redskins. I could live with Wolves or Warriors, something like that. ABC

Edit: Redwolves would work too

But that's where we'll agree to disagree. Those kids are buying regardless. It's not a "couple old geezers" who are disenfranchised. You're talking about literally hundreds of thousands of fans (and pocketbooks) in states like New Mexico, Arizona, South Dakota where you have large populations of Native Americans. This is a 2012 article from Rick Reilly that while it does sound a little tone deaf with the perspective of time passing, there's still a lot of undeniable truth to it.

The beauty is that only time will tell who of us is right. But Josh Harris and team are smart as hell. They didn't buy this organization without a plan to re-engage the ENTIRE fanbase. The rebrand WILL happen, IMO, it's just a matter of time.
