Something Positive

Now that we are mostly observers we can see the stupid things teams do when free agency starts.

The Dolphins will be limited for years by Suh's contract and they weren't a couple of players away from being a legit contender.

The Jags gave oft-injured Julius Thomas $9M a year to play TE on a horrible football team. TEs can be the missing piece on offense for someone like Brady or Luck but they don't touch the ball enough to be considered a critical position to fill in order to improve a football team from the ground up.

With so much crazy money now spent I hope the Redskins can make a few key signings at DB, OL and LB to position well for the draft.
 
its about that age when the kids watching him in 04-07 are coming out of college and want to emulate Meast.

it started with Eric Barry from what I recall...but I have a feeling more are coming.

One positive already from this free agent period is that Miami now are known as signing the most expensive player on defense. First it was us with the Archuleta experiment, then the Haynesworth nightmare. Now it's Miami and the Suh STFU!

I did know he was born in New Zealand, but he was raised in Tonga. His folks must have emigrated early as he went to high school in the US. He's been there long enough to be classified an American.

His size, however, would make him a great winger if he was playing Rugby!
 
Positives I have seen since the McLovin hire (or ones I perceive):

1. Skins are shedding popular but non-productive players.
2. Skins are getting younger.
3. Skins are getting value and passing on players that are asking for salaries not commensurate with their worth.
4. Skins are filling holes judiciously, not trying to fix the entire roster in free agency.
5. Skins are working quietly - almost zero commentary or testing of fan opinion of moves - that's a good thing. My sense is, if the Skins think Mariota is the best player at 5, they'll take him, whether the fan base is primed to freak out about the move or not. I like that.
6. My sense is, no one on this roster is safe. No one. Again, that's a good thing.

you know....I don't think past Redskin signings really have all that much to do with it. Better expressed - I think the derision for the Skins comes from the idea that the people spending all the money (Snyder, Vinny) didn't have a clue what they were doing much less a plan. What Kelley is doing might (probably!) blow up in his face - but the perception is that he has a plan/reason for the moves he is making - i.e., there is some football/business intelligence behind it all...as opposed to what the Skins were doing all those post-SB years.

Agree. i don't like the idea that McL is not empowered to fire the coach to ensure he has what he WANTS...but that is a protection Allen put in place.

I agree with a previous post of yours vis the one year deal for Pot Roast. After seeing PR last night on TV - I like the guy. if the defense really improves next season something has me guessing he will be a major reason. wld hate to see him get away if that is the case.

wonder where McL is headed with that #5 pick. I continue to believe with that pick - if we stay put - it has to be a projected premiere pass rusher. way too high for the o-line talent in the draft. which leads me to believe, if they are happy with the d-line signings and can live with little to no pass rush from Murphy, then they are looking to trade down (with the outlier being Mariota - McL was at Mariota's pro day....but did not interview him).
 
From what I have read the pass rushers in this draft are very good prospects but not elite. They all seem to need work either with building size/strength to play in the NFL or refining technique and developing moves, etc.

When you read that your impression is that these are late first or second round players not top 10 selections.

That's the category I put Ray, Gregory and Fowler into at this point.

Fan, I must admit I lean a bit more towards Boone's explanation. Estimating-or guessing-intent is a very tricky business at best and I generally shy away from it. Not sayig your scenario is impossible just less compelling.

I default to the old saying, "Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity."
 
fair enough Serv! admittedly....just an intuition on my part. I was initially a big gruden supporter. after watching him in action - not only do I think he is not a good decision-maker in the moment (i.e., during games).....something just tells me he's not all "in it." call it passion, call it heart, call it whatever...I did not get the feel last season that this guy is all in FOR THE REDSKINS. I think he is all in for his system....and it stops there.
 
Time to dust this ol boy off and see if we can't get the motor running.
 
Mentioned this a few days ago ... how for some reason the ONLY thing we've been focusing on is the dynamic surrounding Robert ... my guess is someone will manage to steer it that direction again.

However,

Meaningless (unless they were bad, of course) preseason stats:

2nd in total team defense (1st rushing, 4th passing)
6th total team offense (2nd rushing, 21st passing)

Special teams: no cluster**** plays through 2 "games"

Oh yeah ... 2-0. Which means squat. Of course.
 
ALL positive stats!! I love seeing our defense be so good against the run. I have a feeling that Paea, Baker, Knighton, and others are going to clog that middle up. Thats gonna cause Kerrigan, Smith, and Murphy to get free for pressure.
 
Agreed.

Of course last year, as our former DC reminded us, we were pretty damn good defensively in preseason as well.

Which makes another positive---bastige ain't here no more. :)
 
Positive? It's football season! And with all the gripes and moaning about RG3, Gruden, the color of underoos Boone wore to the tailgate last year...er...umm...n/m...it's still football season.

I am going to the home opener against the Dolphins. I will cheer the Redskins like I do every year! And after the game, I will probably complain about some things w could have done better.

It's football season!
