Skins Sign Jordan Reed to Multi-Year Extension

I'm looking at the contract now. It's not bad:

Jordan Reed Contract, Salary Cap Details & Breakdowns | Spotrac

The cap hit is moderate the first two years (he'll have the 17th and then 12th highest cap hit of all TEs this year and next year, respectively), and if he totally stinks we can cut him after those two years and the cap hit is not entirely sucky. If he's still playing at a high level in 2017 and beyond, he gets paid, but by then it will be merely top ten money, not The-Highest-Paid-TE-In-The-League money. There's some risk there, but nothing we shouldn't be able to handle.

Pretty shrewd contract, if you ask me. Not that I'm an expert.

I'm glad Gruden's shit don't stink. I need to keep reminding myself not to believe what he says...well, except when he means it.

The gushiness of this off-season is making me nauseous...we're probably moments away from Dan proclaiming SB.

I'm only asking for a modicum of objectivity, fellas.

I still don't see how the running game has improved, nor do I see a run, stuffing defense...you know, those things we were complaining about at the end of last season.

Nah.

Tr1, I am one of the Negative Nancies around here, and I'm telling you you're off point here.

There are things to criticize about this team and Gruden, to be sure. The receiving corps ain't one of them.

No, we're going into the season without a run stopper and without a running game.

So just who are Matt Ioannidis,Steven Daniels and Keith Marshall?

Do you know who Arie Kouandjio,Takoby Cofield,Austin Reiter,Dominick Jackson and Kevin Bowen are?

Of course not. They're not flashy enough names to move the needle for some(you especially).

But don't act like they never bring anybody in.

Yep and as the team moves forward the lack of drafting of consensus big names, mock stars and 'needs' becomes more difficult to fathom for those not used to anticipating the draft from the back of the line.

If some from the above group can develop into decent starters or least high level rotational/backup guys then some of our need is filled.

There's always the possibility a gem or two comes out of that group

The guy the Skins wanted in the second round went to Seattle because the team didn't move aggressively to get him. They thought he'd drop to them.
Interesting, did you have some sort of hidden camera in the 'war room' on draft day?

What are you basing this statement of fact on?

Thank gawd the FO corrected course.

Delusional.

This is why I affectionately call this place "bizzaro world" at times.

Some people just live in their own world of make believe. But the entertainment value is great.

tr1 is such a great football mind that he spends his days trolling on an internet message board

I don't believe I criticized the receivers. I'm a DJax guy. I love Garcon. I love Reed.

Never gave up on him...unfortunately, Gruden was going to, until the injuries to the TE's demanded Reed getting the #1 slot.

Look, we had a chance to [stuff that has nothing to do with this thread]

Yeah, I got it. You're reaching when you're talking about the decision-making regarding the TEs in order to frame it into your overall dislike for team decision-making. I suppose I should have said "there are things to not like about this front office, Reed's treatment by the team isn't one of them." I thought it was clear that's what I meant.

Reed was down the depth chart because he was injury prone. He still is, but at least we know that when he's on the field for an extended period of time he's a hell of a receiver. Fortunately the contract he signed won't crush us if he doesn't work out. It was a shrewd move with only moderate risk.

The team isn't perfect, but it isn't wrong all the time either. Frankly, I don't even really care if you want to hold the team's feet to the fire even when they don't really deserve it, but please don't pretend you're the only one that's objective around here. That's what prompted me to jump into this discussion. Nobody here has cornered the market on objectivity. Not even you.

Good point. In 2014 Niles Paul had 39 receptions for 507 yards. Not spectacular numbers, but solid, and he's a better blocker than Reed. Kinda what I figure we'll expect from Vernon Davis this year.

Paulsen, who's not much of a receiver, is also a much better blocker than Reed.

I think we saw just how hard it was for Gruden to adjust the running game without a blocking TE. It's why we brought in Davis.

Reed, through sheer force of receiving awesomeness, made his spot on the roster invaluable. That's great for him. But I don't have a huge problem with having solidly balanced and/or blocking TEs ahead of an injury-prone receiving TE to start an offseason. That's WAY down my list of grievances. :)

I'm sure we'll think of something. :)

I don't think any team addresses every need they have every draft/offseason. Yes, the DL still needs to be fixed. But we made sure to fix other things around it so it isn't as big of an issue. We brought back Gallette to add to the pass rush and added Norman in the secondary. We drafted a S/LB, LB, and DE in the draft. Those can help the run stopping this year. Completely fix it? Maybe not, but it should help.

As for running the ball, they must really like Jones. Do we know if he is the answer? Not yet. But no one is saying we're not going to add a veteran RB before camp starts. I wouldn't be surprised if we added a veteran RB for depth heading into TC.

Sure there is some blind faith in McC, but it's because he has shown he has the ability to find players that play well for him. Gruden? I still have my doubts, but McC has given him plenty of pieces to be successful.

I'm okay with the general direction the team is going in.

The point I'm making is that we didn't address two huge issues everyone is aware of: Inability to run and inability to stuff the run.

Now, if I'm mistaken about us not addressing these two deficiencies, please let me know. But don't tell me that an under-size 5th round pick is going to make us better this year (this is not addressed to you Henry.)
Oh I don't think you are mistaken about either of those things. I talk about them all the time.

I'm also not thrilled with Norman's contract. So there. :)

I will say this: Unlike Gruden, Scot McLoughan has a very proven track record of success. I do think that gives him, at least in my eyes, a little more benefit of the doubt. If he thinks this fifth rounder is going to shore up the DL, I'll go with it for now. That's not the way I would have gone, but then again, I haven't built two different Super Bowl teams through the draft.

So while I will still voice my concerns about personnel moves, and I surely do have them, I am still more optimistic about them than I would be if, say, Vinnie Ceratto were making the very same decisions.

Fair enough.

I still think we were outsmarted by the Seahawks, though.

Jarren Reed is a force, and we could have been more aggressive in getting him.

He'll be a pro-bowler in year one.

Maybe, maybe not. I thought we would address DL sooner than we did, but I'm not disappointed with how things played out. Every team misses out on guys throughout the draft. Scot isn't the only one.

Jarred Reed isn't even a Redskin....& he's tearing this family APART!!!!

Edit: During the draft Scott returned from the bathroom and had a "talk" with Bruce.

I was looking at the Reed contract details a couple of days ago. Very team friendly the first two years, then can cut him after that time if he doesn't "live up" to the contract.

The remaining three years are expensive by current standards. However, with the cap expected to rise exponentially over the next five to eight years, it will be an excellent bargain by then.

Having a competent front office for the first time in more than a generation is really nice to see.

I think the signing of Kendal Reyes is being overlooked, as well. I am not saying is "the" answer, but a part of the whole. I do wish we'd gotten at least one more big body on the interior of our DL, but the FO knows something we must not. As BB has supported, I think we still have options to fill a DE over the summer after June 1st cuts or a possible trade.

Same with the Norman deal. Front heavy while we have room, making way for either a good payday for Norman if he earns it, or an out for the team if he doesn't.
