RG3 Development Tracker 2015

I love that writer. One of my two favorites.

Great progress from Griffin. He was a hot mess last year, but there are definitely signs of improvement.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I was far from excited about Griffin's play. I would say he improved from horrible to just pretty bad. Most of his throws were inaccurate, and he took 2 huge hits in just 2 short series. Dude takes way too many big hits.

The protection broke down on several plays, starting WR drops a sure TD pass, and the playcalling was run oriented. I think that's a pretty tough assessment. There was only one play I thought he unnecessarily held onto the ball to make a late throw. In the regular season I'd be okay with it, but for a preseason game it was a bad decision. He didn't take sacks, throw INTs, etc....mostly, he completed passes and kept the chains moving. I thought he was fine.

That might be a little extreme.

I'd say from absolutely horrible to below average.

His accuracy is bad. And he's only going to get back up from so many of those hits.

But still.....much, much better than last year. At least he's not taking sacks left and right. And he was at least going through progressions instead of just tucking and running. His eyes were down the field.

Wish we had traded the kid. Don't want to see him injured again in DC.

Nonsense McD5 - his accuracy is fine. You realize that your saying it doesn't make it so, right? His accuracy LAST YEAR was almost 70%, much better than his vaunted rookie season. Accuracy has never been his issue - but hey, don't let the facts get in the way :) Taking unnecessary sacks, playing recklessly, and not working the offense as designed are issues. But as Gruden himself acknowledged today, he is improving.

And Cousins?

Cousins always looks like a HOFer in games that don't count with zero pressure. Good for him. When he can win regular season games without tossing 3 picks, then I'll give him props.

Btw - that doesn't mean I'm convinced Griffin will turn the corner and become a solid starter. He is capable of it - I'm certain of that. Whether he does, only time will tell. If he doesn't learn to release the ball on time every time, trust his coaches, and develop a healthy sense of self-preservation, the odds are against him. But I think there are signs he is figuring it all out and throwing out lukewarm praise while simultaneously pronouncing him 'inaccurate' (a statement the facts simply don't support), I won't sign off on that.

Like all stats, I think that 70% number has to be viewed in context.

I don't have the stat handy at this second, but have read it and will try to locate it for you. Basically, he threw the largest percentage of short passes in the league. Passes of 5 yards or less. Screens. The routes he knew and ones that involved very little reading of defenses. I'd expect his accuracy rate to be high on those. I'd expect extremely high on those.

He was injured last year, so I don't even feel correct about judging him. But he did sail passes over the heads of receivers--something we didn't see in his first season prior to injury. He was deadly accurate that year.

Last night he tried two corner routes in the end zone on back to back plays.

I can't fault him on the second one because he was about to be killed. I was just happy that he even got the ball off instead of taking a sack.

But the closest person to the first pass may have been someone sitting in the front row of the stands. There was nothing accurate about that.

He also had two others that could have been picks. I believe both of those were to Grant. Grant caught one, and then he switched roles and played defender on the other to break up the pick.

Pinpoint accuracy of course can be found in only a few. No one should expect him to ever be a Rodgers or Manning. I believe his accuracy will improve as he continues to improve his footwork--right stance, not throwing off his back foot, planting, etc.

He's making great progress....but I believe he still has further to go.

The biggest difference that I see between the two QBs continues to be vision. He can improve on that, but it takes time.

Holy shit, man. He went 4 for 8 and threw no picks and was sacked 0 times. If Garcon catches that pass it's a whole different tune.

The season has started. Get on the ****ing wagon and cheer for your players

Anyone drawing a conclusion about Griffin from limited pre-season action, be it good or bad, has an agenda - period.

He looked fine.

Whether he will be successful in 2015 or not remains to be seen. Let's see it. And remember - he can't do it alone (Garcon and OL!). If the Redskins are 'rebuilding', we should be patient, and that includes at the ****ing QB position.

Griffin had an average yards per attempt of 7.9. That's 5th in the league in 2014 brother. Tied with Peyton-****ing-Manning. Ahead of Luck, Wilson, Brees, Rivers, Flacco, Brady, Kaepernick, Newton - want me to keep going?

Griffin has some issues. But accuracy isn't one of them.

Not sure if you're talking to me, but I'm definitely cheering for him. I just didn't think he looked very good. I'm watching it again right now to see if I was being unfair last night.

He went 4 for 8 with no picks and no sacks. If Garcon catches the ball it's more positive yardage. He stood tall in the pocket, he didn't take sacks or dance around until hit, and he made great decisions for the most part

For his first start after all this talk was great. He needs to improve but he did well enough that gruden said he was good and confirmed his confidence in him as the starter.

Sorry if it seems that way, that was not my intention. I just watched the first 2 drives again. I have to say, I think a lot of folks have really lowered their standard when it comes to RG3 an his "development". The guys is not a rookie. He's going ino his 4th year and we're celebrated him finding his receiver on a 6 yard crossing pattern. My biggest conern with him is the hits he continues to take. He took to big ones in 8 pass plays last night.

I'm not really talking to you on the agenda thing brother :). He looked fine last night - how about taking our starting WR and OL to task though - mostly Griffin delivered the ball quickly. Watch it again.

I'm not worried and Garcon at all. I think he's a stud who was very frustrated last year. The oline, I've been one of their biggest critics, but I'm hopeful they'll be better this year. Chester was absolutely horrible last year, and the rookie actually looked pretty good there last night in his first game.

He hasn't been a stud for at least a year and a preseason game. He had a big ol fat goose egg for the money he's being paid.

We're all huge fans of the team here.

Regardless of the position, and who we feel should be starting at RB, WR or QB......this isn't something I like to see:

@john_keim #espnnow "if he wants the starting job it must be by knockout." Why, after 2 bottom tier QB seasons in a row? #bestmanwins

John Keim ‏@john_keim · 10h10 hours ago  Virginia, USA
@imtherealtomhan to convince the owner

Keim keeps saying that the reason RG3 is the starter is because Dan is making the call. If true, that's not good. I understand he feels like he invested a lot and wants to sell tickets, but when will he learn and leave the football decisions to football people?

I dont see him replicating last season. Garcon didn't have any consistency behind center last year (nobody did for that matter) so I'd be willing to overlook a 'down' year. For a guy who's not Desean Jackson, playing across from Desean Jackson... almost 800 yards and an average of 11.1 in THIS offense isn't bad.

The dropped pass is frustrating as hell, mostly because it messed with Griffins head (Griff can't let that kind of stuff beat him though) but those opportunities can't be missed like that. It was good to see him be able to get behind a defense off the play action like that though, I hope this is a bounce back year for him.

Just like everyone else, Keim is basing this "thought" on past history. He has zero proof, or it would be published. Snyder is still a convenient scapegoat for lazy reporters, desperate to fill airtime.
