REDSKINS MAKE ROSTER MOVES

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have activated cornerback Cedric Griffin from the Reserve/Exempt list to their active roster. In addition, the team placed cornerback D.J. Johnson on its Reserve/Injured list and signed free agent linebacker Ricky Elmore to a Reserve/Futures contract.

Griffin (6-0, 195) appeared in nine games with one start for the Redskins in 2012, totaling 43 tackles (34 solo), seven passes defensed and two forced fumbles.

Johnson (6-1, 191) signed with the Redskins’ practice squad on Oct. 23, 2012, before being added to the team’s active roster on Nov. 6. He appeared in seven games, finishing with two tackles and seven special teams tackles.

Elmore (6-2, 255) was originally selected by the Green Bay Packers out of Arizona in the sixth round (197th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft. He was waived by the Packers on Sept. 3, 2011, before signing with the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad on Jan. 5, 2012. Elmore signed with the San Diego Chargers on Feb. 6, 2012, before being waived on Aug. 31. He then signed with the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad on Sept. 3, before being released on Sept. 25. He signed with the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad on Nov. 13, 2012, where he remained for the rest of the season.

Elmore played collegiately at Arizona, where he garnered All-Pac 10 honors as a senior and honorable mention as a junior. He finished his career second in school history with 25.5 sacks, including a conference-leading 11 sacks as a senior in 2010.

Elmore was born on Feb. 1, 1988, in Simi Valley, Calif. He attended Grace Brethren (Calif.) H.S., where he was named first team all-state and all-Ventura County as a senior.

Never thought I'd be so happy to have a player of Cedric's level, back on the team.

As for that Elmore dude who plays linebacker - well, I hear he's good at defending the "shot-gun" offense.

Cedric Griffin's long arms are awesome because they bail Cedric Griffin out when Cedric Griffin goofs up.

Griffin has lost a step with those ACL injuries in consecutive seasons, but he is a solid tackler and the only guy in the secondary that brings enough force to a collision to force a turnover.

While I would have preferred a guy with better speed in the past offseason Griffin improved with playing time during the season and as an 8 year veteran is a clear upgrade over DJ Johnson and Richard Crawford as the first guy off the bench.
