Redskins re-sign Aldrick Robinson

I think that is as much a function of setting the defense up for it with play calling as it is outright speed though. Defenders know he has jets and they know the Skins use him as a big play, go deep guy. We have to use that early to hit him on some short routes so that later in the game defenders bite up on him rather than giving themselves the cushion necessary to allow them to stay with him deep.

*shrug*

Maybe I am overthinking it but I remember Gibbs talking about play calling back during his first run here and he likened it to a chess match. He used to run plays in the first half that had little likelihood of baring much fruit at the time just to set the defense up for a big play in the second half. Robinson seems like the kind of guy that would be great for that sort of thing.

so, yea, it's a combination of the two. the Cooley comment has some traction with me since I saw it on the filed. but, your point that with smart moving of all the pieces the team could extract value from AR is potentially viable as well.

that pretty much is spot on with every other analysis i've heard/read on robinson. seems to be an accurate description of why he's not more of a play maker for us.

well, if Robinson had good hands we could throw him some short route catches and set him up for the deep ball.

but he is like Hankerson, he catches every OTHER pass they throw his way.

remember Rod Gardner, ole '50/50'?

that's what these guys remind me of.

what I remember from both championship games was how well the Denver, Seattle, NE receivers CAUGHT the ball.

To be fair, there were some games NONE of our receivers were getting separation....and that, as Neo said, seems to be a reflection of scheme and play calling as much as raw speed. Aldrick may not be the guy, but I figure it's worth a not very painful 1-year deal to find out.

Yeah, towards the end there was a lot of predictability, at least when Robert was in there. When Cousins came in, the offense opened up. I think they were trying to mask Robert's pocket-passing inefficiencies instead of correcting them.

I saw it different. I saw Wr's not named Garcon or Reed not getting open for either qb and dropping balls on crucial downs when they were. As the season progressed only Garcon and Reed became reliable targets... I suppose that could have contributed to the "predictable" nature of the passing game especially when Reed went down. Even Moss had a case of butter fingers. Cousins faced some pretty lousy defenses and still failed to make it work. I honestly feel maybe it's not a qb issue as much as a multitude of issues like general lack of talent on both sides of the ball. That's not to say that Both Griffin and Cousins don't need to play better. I thought the most troubling issue this year for Griffin was his inaccurate deep balls. They were really bad for most of the season. I'm hoping that's just a case of him not having confidence in his pass blocking resulting in the bad throws. There were some pretty ones thrown as well though but they were usually dropped or it seems that way.

You guys also need to remember that Dezmond Briscoe is still here too.
At 6'2 210 and just 24 yrs old, there's still a chance that he shows something this spring when it comes to bolstering our WR corps.

No disrespect intended DP, but I wouldn't hold my breath...

None taken. :)

Just IMO....he's young enough that we still don't know yet.

Maybe this is blasphemous? But given the choice,I'd let Moss walk and give a guy like Briscoe a shot.

Moss is done.

Briscoe has shown flashes, that's for sure. I wouldn't mind keeping him on the roster at all.

I think everyone, probably even Moss, realizes that Moss' days here are done. Who knows? He might have one of those training camps again that proves us all wrong. I am not opposed to giving Briscoe a chance, but players like Briscoe, Robinson, Hankerson should all be on short leashes in training camp. They have all shown glimpses, but none have proven to be worthy of a roster spot on a good team. And Lanky, before you start misreading my post, Hankerson has been solid enough when on the field to be a #3...key point...when he's on the field. Between the injuries and his apparent lack of motivation. I think he's got the talent, just not the drive nor the ability to stay healthy.

I am not nearly as high on Hank as I was last season. In my mind, last season was his opportunity to prove the doubters wrong, and he didn't do it. I think he still can earn a spot, but as a 4 or 5 (maybe even a 3).

I think this is the due diligence necessary to prevent our guys from going elsewhere and blowing up.

He's small but has the speed and he has shown that he can catch the ball at times. Lack of reps and poor overall offensive play may be able to partly explain this past season?

I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt solely based on the Thanksgiving day victory in 2012 against dALLAS. Those types of TDs are the ones we are missing on offense. We struggle in the redzone and fail to score on big plays consistently. We need more big plays.

He returned kicks in college and has 4.35 speed with a 40" vertical. Hopefully this staff will finally help him realize the potential a lot of us saw in glimpses!

Sorry that your predictions for Hankerson didn't work out Jaime. I'm not gonna gloat, I think he is just who he is.

I think we are 1 WR away from having a very potent staff. If we could find a route running specialist (ie. Moss in his prime, Amendola, Welker. etc) we really could see a difference from the other guys. You get a guy like that and it forces the safeties to stay in the middle of the field, just outside the box. A guy who can hit that slant consistently for 4 - 8 yards. One who can run a quick out and turn upfield. Hank might be able to do that, showing (very few) flashes of having good vision. This wont be the answer long term of course, but for the time being, with so many other holes, I could see this benefiting the team at the lowest cost.

I brought up Robinson, Hankerson and Briscoe all being bubble players...or at least they should be...but there is a player I continue to be intrigued by, Nick Williams. I know he had his issues with PR duty, but I attribute some of that to nerves. After some film on him at CT, admittedly limited film, there are highlights showing him do exactly what Welker does and returning kicks. Here' just one small clip.

I'm with you brother, I'm rootin for Williams hard. I'd love to see that kid find his groove. He might be that player to fit that role... and an offseason working out with the team and the rest of the guys on the 53 man roster could go a long way with him. Assuming Tana' doesn't come back, the chances to get reps with Griff and/or Cousins (obviously pending him getting traded) will increase. Minicamps and training camps could go a long way with him not only in the passing game, but in the return game as well.

I guess I haven't officially eaten my crow for the Hankerson predictions... But yeah, I was wrong. The kid didn't break out like I hoped this year. Oh well.

Meh...I was happy with the draft pick in the 3rd round too. Looks like those pundits who questioned his motivation were correct. Maybe a new coaching staff, the realization that his NFL dream could be over if he doesn't work hard will be enough to motivate him. But I won't hold my breath.

Oh I let you off the hook months ago ;)

I'll still stand by my original assessment of him, shies away from contact, runs before securing the catch, runs out of bounds to avoid contact, drops balls that are contested, drops balls when a DB is bearing down on him, doesn't fight for balls in the air. Seems to have more of a rapport with Cousins than Griffin but I'm pretty glad he's not bragging on "the U" all over the place. Hey it used to be a tough business going across the middle, nowadays though? I think he's just soft and I just don't feel like he has much "it" factor.

I wish I could have had these feelings about someone else in the NFC East though :(
