Redskins FA Signings Thread

It really does seem now that the Skins were caught off guard by the league action on the cap.

After Garcon and Morgan, the other deals have been for players with checkered pasts or coming off injuries who need to prove themselves.

For quality guys like Grubbs and Mathis the Redskins simply did not have or want to spend what was solid but not outrageous dollars.

But with all the picks for RG, we need some solid no question additions and that means signing for $$ and possibly restructuring other deals.

I agree completely. I don't think the Skins had any idea that the NFL was getting ready to drop that bomb on them. I think they went after Garcon and Morgan were part of the original plan. After that I think they have been shooting from the hip. I think that they have done a pretty good job. I still hope they at least get another tackle.

I'm just fine with Rex coming back......as long as he doesn't, y'know, play.
...or talk to the rookie. Or interact in any way, shape or form with him. Or any other rookies. Or any other players. Or any...

So you guys wanna pay a guy a million dollars to do absolutely nothing for a year ?

Hey, we paid Fat ass Albert multi millions to do nothing for a couple of seasons...:bomb2:

Somebody has to hold the clipboard and pace the sidelines. Who better then RG 3 and out at this point, Beck ?

I like the Grossman signing. Let's face it, when he was bad he was really bad but when he was "on" this offense was more dynamic and exciting than we have seen since the last Super Bowl team (excepting some serious work by Portis during Gibbs II).

I call for an immediate moratorium on any and all mentions of Rex Grossman as RGIII, or anything similar to RG3. Even the slightest association at this point has got to be negative for our possible future starter!! I suggest the nickname Gross, man.

In all seriousness, I'm not sure this is a great idea. Skins fans are going to revolt if Rex starts barring any injury this year. I get the idea of bringing someone in who knows the system, but I am hoping Kyle adjusts the system to account for a slightly more mobile QB than stone feet Rexy. If he does adjust, how useful is Rex gonna be, realistically?

I think the system is the system - you call more rollouts and such with RG3 back there than you do with Gross, man.

Neo does have a point, as much as I hate to admit it. Although the offense was pretty dynamic, it was terrible counting on Rexy for at least a couple turnovers a game.

Grossman was not the key issue over the past 2 days.

Rather it has been the Redskins seeming unwillingness at this point to sign players that are seeking market deals.

We seem to rummaging through the attic for guys like Meriweather and Griffin who were solid starters at one time but are now question marks.

I don't want to see a repeat of 2010 with the Artis Hicks and Maake Kemoeatu signings for guys that can barely walk or who are one step from being out of the league.

exactly BT

when we have holes, we should fill those holes with PLAYERS, I dont want to exchange last years garbage for newer garbage, we tried that in year one, then last year we did it again on the Oline, frankly we need to crap or get off the pot, if you think RG3 is the guy (and after using 3 firsts and a second to get him we damn well better) then you do whatver it takes to protect that guy, and we flat missed on Mathis and Winston, Winston wasnt the greatest RT but he was by far the best one in free agency, mathis was a perfect fit and wouldnt have broken the bank.

Which bank are we talking about here? The one before the $18M penalty, or the one after that?

Lichtensteiger signed his RFA tender today so he is back. Its a contract good for 1 year and $1.2 million.

Not much money, but can he play?

Is this going to be another guy that isn't right until 2013?

I thought Lich had pretty bad damage in his knee. I would think it would take a season to regain form.

I don't think O-linemen take as long as RB's, WR's, and DB's do to get back to playing form.

Ding ding ding! The NFL really screwed us on this one, and we probably lost out on FAs like Mathis because of it.

Decisions were made internally that keeping 32 year old Santana Moss and 31 year old John Beck on the active roster were more important at this time then freeing up the cap space by releasing them and signing one of these other players.

Then again, what is the structure of their contracts? If their cap hits would be high by releasing them, then releasing them might have hurt our cap situation instead of making it better. I don't know what the structure of their contracts are, but that is a possibility.

That the $18 cap penalty affected our FA plans is beyond question. They only had so much to spend and put a price on each one of these guys. When they got priced out they diidn't bother. The draft is deep in Guards/tackles and we will probably pick up one each in this draft. A 3rd or 4th rounder is capable of starting if they fit the system and have the skill. Remember, Cook and Smith are what, both 7th round draft picks? They are your primary backups. I don't see either developing into future starters but you never know. I would rather get some young, quality guys in the draft adding depth and future starters. You can only do so much in FA. RG3 is not going to take us to the Super Bowl this year.

This team had a history of reaching for guys, old questionable guys, and paying too much for them based upon perceived need (or desperation because they had no one else in the pipeline). When Allen/Shanahan showed up and put a stop to that we all applauded. Now, you are compaining because they won't go out and dump a tone of money on guys that might or might not fit. Stick to the plan, the pieces are starting to fall into place.

You also are not taking into account that there is still time in FA for deals/trades to happen.

We have made mistakes in free agency under Shanahan, just not the jaw dropping ones for an Archuleta or Haynesworth that Cerrato made.

We signed Atogwe to a nice contract and released him a year later after he showed us nothing.

We resigned veteran free agent Jammal Brown to a deal for $27M including $9M up front. All that for a guy that couldn't stay on the field in 2010 and was limping in the offseason.

We also signed Moss to a deal where his cap number as a #3 receiver could be close to $4.6M.

That's a lot of money for a guy that runs 5-15 yards and sits down in the zone as a possession target.

Yes, this team has made good moves as well in FA especially on defense.

But let's be honest and look at the roster and admit there is a lot of cap space allocated to older, now less productive players such as Moss, Brown, as well as Cooley and to a lesser extent Beck.

Once Rex was resigned we needed to jettison Beck.

What is your point? Every single team makes free agency mistakes.

I don't get the criticism on this - FS was a position of need, and Atogwe was the best available free agent on the market at the time. The Redskins were not his only visit; other teams definitely had interest. Some guys recover from injuries, unfortunately Atogwe never really did. Tough luck, not a mistake.

We resigned veteran free agent Jammal Brown to a deal for $27M including $9M up front. All that for a guy that couldn't stay on the field in 2010 and was limping in the offseason.

I don't get the new contract for Brown either, but OT was also a position of need also. Maybe they thought he was better than all the available options? Also they had invested a draft pick in Brown, more than likely they did not want to see that draft pick wasted.

We also signed Moss to a deal where his cap number as a #3 receiver could be close to $4.6M.

Not sure which Redskins team you were watching last year, but Moss was the #1 all year. Not to mention, he ran plenty of slants and "Go" routes - would have had a few more TDs save for some bad passes and a drop or two. Remember the Dallas game? Yes, that reinforces your point, but he wasn't just a sit down 5-15 yards kind of guy, that's just wrong. I do agree its time to part ways with Santana, although he'll likely stay now as we lost out on the Eddie Royal sweepstakes.

But let's be honest and look at the roster and admit there is a lot of cap space allocated to older, now less productive players such as Moss, Brown, as well as Cooley and to a lesser extent Beck.

This regime had nothing to do with the Cooley extension, and the Beck contract can't be that unfriendly to the cap. Still plenty of time to jettison him! We haven't even hit the draft yet!

Not to mention that the Cooley extention didn't look bad at the time. He was coming off back to back Pro Bowl years, had been healthy his whole career and was looking one of if not the best TE in the NFC.

It is all well and good to look at things now with 20/20 hindsight and call them "questionable" but Bulldog, the only move on your list that I really remember anyone questioning at the time was the move to resign Brown. All the others were considered pretty solid by most folks. At least as best as I remember.

That's how I remember it also. And even the Brown move was met with mixed criticism, it wasn't all negative. I think people were more upset with giving up a draft pick for a player than the player himself.
