Redskins Announce Ron Rivera as Head Coach

What's HAS become increasingly clear to me is that inarguably good humans and football men—see Gibbs, Joe, and Rivera, Ron—can spend a lot of time closely vetting the man and come away seeing something there they want to work with.

For now, at least, that's something I find worth taking into serious account.

That is exactly what I was saying in the post at the top of that same page (page 4).
But you said it better and more concise.
Had I known I was about to enter a Scribe Contest against the Great Om, I would have never entered a contest that I knew I could never win.

Shuffleboard is gone along with the ping pong table.

If they get rid of the video arcade Josh Norman is going to ask for his release.

He's being interviewed but Mitchell was saying he could end up as the qb coach if KOC is retained as OC.

Meh. The Happy Thanksgiving thing was nerves. He was stumbling over his words the entire time. That's something I can forgive Dan Snyder for. :)

No, what concerns me was when Rivera said he took the job because Snyder told him this was a coach-focussed arrangement. That the coach makes the decisions and has the final say yada yada yada. That all sounds VERY familiar. That's how Snyder sold it to Schottenheimer. That's how he sold it to Gibbs. That's how he sold it to Shanahan. In every single one of those arrangements, Snyder either had significant input or the coach was fired.

I'm pretty much exactly where I was when Shanahan was hired. Cautiously pessimistic. So far, I'm not seeing anything different from any other post-rookie QB damage-control situation. Maybe this time it really WILL be different. But as I said ten years ago, I'll believe it when I see it.

This...except I think I am cautiously optimistic. Then again, I sound awfully pessimistic, so who knows?

Oh come on Brian - you want to 'not buy it' :) Are you seriously suggesting that he didn't know what month we are in? He is no public speaker, but it's not like he got up there and threw up in the middle of it. It was obviously a joke - which no one but a few who were there - got.

Stumbling over his words is one thing. Forgetting what holiday we just passed is quite another.

I venture to say I do more public speaking than most here and it took years to get over the nerves that cause stumbles. That was with classes in performance too. Even now, those nerves come back at the weirdest times and cause me to mess something up or forget something. Snyder has a lot of issues that can be used to beat him with but I can't see this as one of them.

Then throw in the fact that he knows most of the people in the room are upset with the state of the team and many blame him. It had to feel a bit like facing a firing squad for Snyder, even with all the positive vibes that have been coming out over the rumors of Rivera and Del Rio taking over. His only real mistake was in telling what appears to be an inside joke to a group of outsiders without considering just how that would then play with folks like you. And yeah, that was a real mistake.

Very few us here, if indeed any of us at all, would have done a better job.

I have done quite a bit of public speaking over the years myself, 20 years in a 12 step program and a few MC gigs with thousands in the stands...I understand the nervousness you're talking about...which reinforces my claim. He was so nervous he got the wrong holiday out. I've stumbled, it happens.

I think Henry and I are on the same page with this, and I agree with Om...Rivera and Gibbs both see something in Snyder to want to be here, or help advance this organization as Gibbs has. The latter is what I was saying needed to happen for this organization to suceed, so I will give Snyder credit. I wish I knew what the FO structure was going to look like, but we've taken a step forward. I will applaud Snyder for that, and forgive him his public speaking woes.

Who cares? Cooke never spoke to the fans directly except when holding a trophy 😊

The difference between Rivera and Schottenheimer is that Ron was smart enough to come in and quietly wrestle final personnel control away in a way that went out of his way not to criticize or belittle Snyder.

IMO that good will counts with people.

Marty continued to make visible public displays to trumpet how he was in charge and when the team started out 0-5 he was an easy target.

You have to know how to manage your people but also your boss.

Rivera shows visible resolve and strength but not mega ego.

With Marty the big ego without the rings or even an SB appearance wore thin.

It helps that there was another 16 years of futility and Snyder became a beaten man.

What puzzles me is why no GM until after the draft. Something Rivera demanded in some sort of compromise/deal with DS?

So....then...will we be seeing lots of Redskins One reports in the near future recounting how the BrulessDan flew off into the wild blue yonder to cajole a free agent?

I BELIEVE this is a running interview for Kyle Smith. If he works well with Rivera and they feel confident in the draft, as well as possibly having an impact on free agency, he could find himself getting the job.

While I trust you intuition here, I have to ask what sort of barometer rivera would use to measure success with Kyle Smith? Simply their relationship? We won't know about players for a few years.

They could clear up a lot of the "confusion" is they simply named him GM, and parted ways at the end of the off season if it didn't work out. the optics as is are of a plan yet to be put in place.

Yeah, I know how that might look...meida would have a field day with it.

Rivera Can't Get Along with GM. Who Wears Pants on that Team? MoreDysfunction...Blah, Blah, Blah!!!

I think Kyles ability to run the college side of things is obvious, and you dont want to let that out of the building. Now let him work in free agency, build a big board and see if the vision is shared. If it aint gonna work. Hes still on the payroll on the college side, no firing or demotion necessary. If he wows... you lock up a 34 year old GM who can lead your franchise for the forseeable future. Its a win win. If someone comes calling and wants him as their GM before a decisions is made... we still hold the cards

Sounds reasonable. The only tangent then is a DS statement that the coach will handle personnel matters. Read that someplace.

He said its coach centric. That you get your coach and build out from there. Develop the staff. Develop the scheme, and get the players that fit that. I dont think its ever been reported that Rivera is in charge of personnel. He has come out and said its a conglomerate and that decisions will be made as a group.

He said coach had the final say... One voice... So I have to believe he's last say on personnel.

Let's just hope Rivera is better at personnel decisions than Coach Gibbs...
