Redskins Acquire Center Bryan Stork

tr1, we all know all that about you. No need to run through all of it. The only really pertinent bit for this thread is this:

In a desperate move, the team acquires a center from NE who is one head knock from ending career, but you only see it as a win-win because if he doesn't work out, we get off cheaply. In the meantime, we're not gonna be looking to improve that spot, you know, until around week six when Stork is on the IR. Maybe it'll be because he's a head case.

Why is it a desperate move? Looks like a move of opportunity to me. NE wanted to unload a player that could help us so we took a flyer on him. There's no evidence to suggest that's the only thing we are ever going to do to try and improve the line. A desperate move would be to trade a 2nd or a 3rd rounder for a guy like that. That's 'Vinnie land.' Not a conditional 7th rounder. If he doesn't work out, he literally costs us nothing and we are exactly in the same spot we were in two days ago. Dan and Vinnie never made deals like that.

I can understand someone thinking this move won't work out. Maybe the guy's a total head case. Maybe he's an injury waiting to happen. What don't get is the hair-pulling and post after post after post explaining why this is one of the seven signs of the apocalypse. It's just not that important a move.

I'm not really concerned about the supposed "attitude" issues the guy has. Either he'll pull his head out of his butt and learn that if he's going to have an NFL career beyond NE he has to keep it between the lines and the whistles, or he'll be gone and we'll continue the search for a legit NFL center.

What does kinda have me puzzled is exactly how an offensive lineman gets four concussions. I'm sure other OL's get them too, but I'm sitting drawing a blank on if I've ever heard of even one other guy getting even one concussion. Is he falling down and hitting his head on the turf? Are opposing DL's smacking him on the head or head-butting him and it's not getting called?

His concussions and his "attitude issues" are directly related, in some cases.
In his scuffles (AND actual blocks), he's been known to resort to head-butting, which results in concussion, at least on one of those occasions.
The concussions are a serious issue. We've seen guys retire due to those, who have less concussions than he has.
You could probably make a highlight reel, just of Stork's head-butts, alone.

He has statistics on his side for the future but probably his style puts him at greater risk.
2012-2015 the least likely Offensive position for a concussion is Center. The Guard, Tackle and WR positions are split up right side & left side so the stats in those positions aren't doubled because of having two of each on the field at the same time. C was 9, RG 10; LG 10 and then RB's @ 11 who are the most likely for a high number of legal wacks to the head.

CB's lead the league and they jumped from 24 in 2014 to 41 last year. The league overall went from 123 to 199 in the same time span.

Not to belittle the fact that there are obviously players getting concussed but I wonder how much this rise has to do with more stringent protocols versus actual injuries. Maybe there were guys before 2015 that should've been in the protocol that weren't. And maybe being more cautious now is part of it and possibly a mix of both.

Being uber cautious is good and they should not be taking the issue lightly so maybe it's time to consider expanding the rosters to over 53 to compensate. 199 concussions comes out to an average of 6 players a team (Skins had 4) last season. Or maybe allowing teams to add a spot once they break a certain threshold of players for each guy that enters the protocol or something. Last year was the lowest over those four years at 123 but that still is almost 4 players a team.

They are currently doing research on the effect of repeated subconcussive impacts as it relates to potential for sustaining concussions and CTE. By the nature of the position linemen repeatedly sustain these smaller impacts which can add up.

Not sure what the nfl's current rules are but the helmet in the link appears to show science is heading in the right direction. Basically this helmet has give in it to absorb energy.
