I'm debating this right now. I've done rescues and puppies. I know this is very selfish but I prefer to raise a dog from puppy, it's the only way to get a dog that you know will be well behaved. But we've had 2 dogs and we really don't want that again. I've found the perfect breeder, her Shepherds are half working line and half show line. What this means is a wonderful, calm personality but when

But getting a puppy from a specific breeder is not like buying a blanket from Walmart, you have to be patient. And at 66 and retired I can't imagine life without a dog, she is my main source of entertainment. So I'm thinking of doing as you are planning so I won't go a year without a dog but the wife is not onboard. So I'll probably foster rescues until the new puppy is available.

Two shepherds would be a handful.

We're into beagles now and she sleeps on the bed. Not sure I want two dogs in the bed.

Hardest part about a rescue is choosing just one. I want to take them all home with me.

At night we usually limit it to 2 dogs sleeping on the bed, but during the day there's typically 4 curled up with me while I work

Our current Beagle 'Sophie' is the first dog we let in bed. I have a king bed so there's plenty of room for her. She's on the small size for beagles at 23 lbs. so she doesn't take up much space either. She wakes me up first around 6am by laying her head on my pillow facing me. I've never been such a softie with dogs before her either, but I do love her snuggles in the mornings.

Certain dogs should never sleep in your bed since they can use that to elevate their position in the pack, but I'm not worried about that with a beagle.

Hard rule, no dogs in bed...for me

Me too! Nobody loves their dogs more than I do but none have ever been allowed on furniture, or even upstairs. I am not subjecting my guests to dog hair when they sit on a couch and I'm sure not accepting hair, dirt and possible fleas in my bed. I'd never tell another owner what to do but I'll never understand why so many owners allow pets on furniture.

I was in downtown Frederick and this Great Dane was off leash in a really busy area , right by the owner's side. At the light they stopped and he sat, then walked as she did. It was quite impressive.

Back when I had an iguana, I was at Daytona for whatever...dude walking the A1A strip in front of me had his iguana hanging from his pants down his leg. Probably the coolest thing I've ever seen. We had a chat, he said "Yeah, he just hangs on there..."

Decades ago, I knew a dog trainer. His dogs only ate on command, to prevent any poisoning from outsiders. He backed his van up to the bar with the back doors open and the dogs would communicate with people walking by, but never moved out of the van.

A solid example of excellent professional training. My Malinoise was the same. You should see the Great Danes in Germany that have been trained for hunting wild boar, they are vicious.

I wouldn't let a shepherd stay indoors much less get on the furniture. They are shed machines that rarely come inside.

Our beagle on the other hand, only goes outside to do her business. She has no dirt or fleas and is bathed and brushed out frequently. No company or friends have ever sat in dog hair either, so I guess it depends on a number of factors when deciding to let a dog in your lap or bed. I will add that my dog only gets in my lap or bed after we call it up. No way does my dog own the furniture.

When we got our first one my wife wanted her outside, as that's how all the dogs lived when she grew up. I rejected this, they are family members not livestock. But yeah it was a big ask to get another long coat, every corner has tumbleweeds. But she fell in love with the breed and we just keep getting them.

We're the same age so we both grew up with 'wolves' in our backyards but as I've gotten older, we've moved toward short haired dogs so we could keep them inside. Our shepherds were the best dogs, and nobody ever came close to us kids with them around, but they are champion shedders.

OK, I've got a lot to unload.
My step-sister passed away from early Alzheimers a few months ago. Now her brother is at UVA with a form of Leukemia.

He taught me how to ride a motorcycle. We had 5 acres, a track, and fun...from a YZ 80 tp a KX...which threw me off the back of it because it had so much more power!!!

I love this kid...I punted a football and fucked up my ankle once, he carried me everywhere until I was okay. When he had mono, I heard the cowbell ring cuz my dad would have to get him to the bathroom. He's a good man.

Spent the day at Johns Hopkins yesterday. Wife had something called a Watchman device installed, which is a cool little device inserted via catheter to the heart, She has Afib and this device works to prevent blood clots from entering the system to help prevent a stroke. I'm very relieved that she has had this implant. But the day absolutely sucked. We got up at 3, at the hospital by 5 and left a little before 5 PM. I was stuck, the garage didn't have cell phone service so I couldn't even hang out in my car. which was much more comfortable than a waiting room. But mostly it was a lot of waiting around with the wife to make sure everything was OK.

Oh and the food sucks. Up the road at Mercy Hospital I had crab soup and a surprisingly decent crab cake for lunch.
