Alec Baldwin is a gigantic POS, always has been. Hope the woman’s family gets some comfort suing him in to oblivion.

Baldwin being a POS aside, how do these stunt coordinators not have EVERYTHING on set safety proof’d, to include a rule not pointing any weapon unless it’s in a scene?

This Baldwin story is crazy. There are so many questions that we will probably never get an answer to. The biggest one though is was he shooting the gun as part of the scene or did he just fire it recklessly. One story I read said this gun had jammed earlier in the day during filming. That is what makes me ask if he fired it recklessly, just out of frustration because it wasn’t working and then it discharged and this woman was killed. Just crazy and sad for her family.
 
I've heard the crew walked off set do to working conditions, meaning the safety experts may have bailed. Regardless, if you hold a gun in your hand, you are responsible, always I mean always CHECK THE CHAMBER, it's not that damn difficult. This to me is a case of pure negligence. However, he's Alec Baldwin so he'll settle out of court and get like 300 hours of community service for negligent manslaughter.
 
I doubt he’ll even get that as a punishment. They’ll push the blame to the crew that walked out more than likely
 
Well he does think his :poop: doesn't stink, and albeit I found that amusing considering his second amendment stance, I do have a question, he's been around for years with guns, prop guns, blanks, real ammo so how could he be so idiotic to not even check what he was holding? Rumors have it that he said "why did I have a gun with a live round." Again, not to :deadhorse: but if you had checked the chamber you might have noticed there was this projectile thing in the casing, now pardon my non hollywood ignorance but I believe from literature, diagrams, photo's, that projectile thing is called a BULLET.
 
It doesn't really matter 'who' was involved in the incident. It goes back to my previous point... why are their real firearms OF ANY KIND being used on movie sets when there are perfectly realistic mock weapons of any type you might desire available? In the days of CGI where you can add any effects (like gun flashes and sounds) in post-production, there is no need or excuse for having real firearms on a movie set. Ever.

Obviously, even in this production, they had safety protocols in place - hence the guy handing over the weapon announcing it was a 'cold' weapon (ie... safe). The problem is, a 1 in 1000 chance that a safety protocol is going to fail isn't acceptable when the result of that rare failure is someone losing their life. This is the kind of result that warrants something I usually hate - more regulation. It shouldn't be legal to have real firearms on a movie or tv set in this day and age. It's unacceptable.

Not sure I can agree there Tarhizzle, regulation can't over come being responsible. If there's a movie where they want to use a real cannon in the scene I'm good, but then it must include pre-cautions and people who actually know what they're doing. Actors ...act, Keanu doesn't actually know Kung Fu, so get a stunt double to do it who knows what they're doing.
 
The problem is, you can’t prevent human error. This isn’t the first death on a movie set and it won’t be the last if they continue to use real firearms. It’s unnecessary. Prohibit real firearms and it never happens again.
 
Well according to that logic, no one should drive a car? I know that's hyperbolic to the extreme but if we take personal responsibility away are we accomplishing anything but establishing a "safe zone." CGI is still expensive, reactions to actual sounds help make the cinema, imagine the chariot scene in Ben Hur all cgi, although they may have done that in the remake I refuse to watch. This solely is in the hands of Alec Baldwins actions, by now after what 40 years in cinema he doesn't know to check the chamber??
 
SO - to be blunt, preventing film and TV crews and cast from dying from a firearms accident trumps your need for a more realistic viewing experience :)

At some point, this isn't about figuring out who is to blame or is responsible. I think it's safe to say that everyone involved in leadership of a project, safety of the cast and crew, and certainly the individuals handling the firearms bear some responsibility for this poor woman's death. But when horrible things happen, it is the processes that allowed it to happen that should be looked most closely at. One can have a process and series of expectations. But humans are going to human and a process that only breaks down due to human error 1 time in 1000 may be a pretty hard wired process. But if that one time results in someone's death, it's an unacceptable failure rate. Blaming individuals - when clearly a process is not fool-proof - is short-sighted.

They need to make it impossible for a live weapon to ever go off and kill someone again. It's technically feasible to remove real firearms from sets. Honestly, it's a no-brainer. And no purist film watcher preferences should have a role in that decision. We're talking about human lives.
 
Tarhizzle, Alec Baldwin is the producer, he's the one paying for the movie, isn't safety part of that job? He could've used a ceramic looking toy but he chose not to. I know that we will agree to disagree but not to agree but aside from your safety measures you've stated he could've made those choices you stated. Should Alec Baldwin be charged? I say yes, this isn't his first rodeo and maybe these Hollywood "accidents" happen because they fear no responsibility for their actions.
 
Accidents happen because of error-prone processes. Hate Alec Baldwin all anyone wants - but I guarantee you he never desired to hurt anyone, through negligence or for any other reason. American factories and industry realized more than 50 years ago that human error happens and that it is broken processes that don't guard against human error (which is inevitable) are the issue. I think you're missing my point. It has nothing to do with Alec Baldwin. He's a human. He (and apparently others) did what humans do. He made a mistake. If the film and TV industries adopted Lean Six Sigma principles, that you have to have as foolproof a process as possible because human errors will occur, most if not all of these incidents could be avoided. You don't solve a problem by saying 'try harder humans' because 'trying' has nothing to do with it.
 
I was speaking of complacency not "try harder." So when does personal accountability matter? This isn't about hating Alec Baldwin, it's about how he'll probably get a slap on the wrist when he should know to check the chamber. We're discussing two different things, you're stating a resolution you feel would solve the problem and I'm stating that the problem shouldn't have manifested if people actually felt accountability, meaning consequences. On a side note, The Hunt for Red October is a good movie. Random thoughts went down the rabbit hole.
