Random Commanders Thoughts

I don’t blame Monken for taking the only chance he’ll probably ever get to be an NFL HC, but dammit I really had hopes they’d have to settle for Lynn and give us those picks!

Wholly agree, but there's a narrative out on X that Quinn only hires "his buddies and kids of front office staff" while Harbaugh is "a leader, bringing in all his winning staff from Baltimore!" When it's a very similar approach
The narrative on Quinn is stupid.

All you have to do is look at the staff he put together, and he'd never worked with the OC (Kliff) before. I also don't think he worked with Tavita Pritchard (he was already here) or David Blough.

There are others. I think he had more familiarity with the defensive coaches than the offensive coaches, and that would generally make sense.

That said, I think after a coach has been fired or changed spots, bringing the entire staff from one place to another is a terrible idea. Ron did that, he brought essentially the entire Panthers staff here after they had failed in Carolina absent Jack. That didn't work. Failed rather spectacularly, in fact.

A lot of our good players in recent years have been “lead by example guys” (Jon Allen, Terry McLaurin) and while fans love those guys, it might be part of our problem as a whole in the locker room. It starts with coaches but you need accountability guys on your roster.

What you need is TALENT.

We can talk all you want about character and who's a great guy in the community but at the end of the day if it's a linebacker that runs a 4.9 and can't cover anyone, the defense is still going to be a loser.

Hopefully, there is a balance where you get guys that are professional and come to play on Sundays but they may not always be the 'friendly' and 'cuddly' type players that the media seem to love.

The Browns did the most Brown thing ever. Passed on Schwartz as HC because they wanted him as DC and by reports he walked out today and said, “I won’t be back”.

We used to be exactly like them.

It’s nice to know that while I have issues with the way things are going with us… we are not the Browns.

What a time to be alive.

It does feel good not to be the worst run team in sports.

Though even with Snyder, the Browns were giving us a race. That Watson deal. Man. So bad in so many ways.

I'm a Wizards fan and there was one season Russ was here. He literally willed that shitty team to an 8th seed in the playoffs that year. It was not only his play but he was consistently on the young guys' asses and pushed them hard to elevate their games. He would yell at and set high standards for guys like Deni Avdija and Rui Hachimura. Deni has credited Russ for helping him develop mental toughness and set a high standard for himself as a rookie that year. Deni is probably going to make his first all star game this year.

To your point, I don't know if this team has a leader like that. That leader needs to be one of your top 3-4 players to have that type of credibility in the locker room.

I think that's Daniels. He started to do it this year, you heard the story of him throwing a guy out of the huddle, etc. I think he is that way. You can see him get upset on the field at times when people don't know what they're doing. Sometimes it's covered with a smile, but I thing there's a fire there behind the smile.

The other guy was Wagner. But he's past his prime from a playing perspective. And probably won't be back.

I always think of the story Brian Mitchell told of how when he was a rookie he came into camp and was wowed by how hard Art Monk worked. He realized that if a guy like Art had to work that hard he better bust his butt or he'd be off the team real quick. A think some guys get it and can self motivate. Others, need a more hands-on approach. Still, I think that it's also about the team. I think at some point a standard gets set and all players need to rise to meet it. This is, in part, why it always irked me when our "leaders" skipped out on offseason minicamps and anything "not mandatory." Sure, it's allowed, but if the best players on your team are loafing during practice (IE Clinton Portis) or skipping them outright and then start every season slow as they play themselves into shape then that attitude because the norm. The understanding that it is sign that you made it if you take days off is one which leads to worse habits not better.

There are players that coaches like Belichick or Reid look at and stay away from because they have a losing mindset.

You see a guy like Tyreek Hill and how quickly Reid traded him after they won the Super Bowl. No way Reid was going to get stuck paying Hill a top 3 contract given his previous behavior and attitude.

What New England and KC did more than anything else during their runs was to stay AWAY from being stuck giving a guy a long-term contract who demonstrably underperformed it or turned out to be a bad guy that ended up out of the league with suspensions, drugs, etc.

Here in DC we gave Daron Payne a top 3 contract while the Chiefs were working to give Chris Jones a new contract.

There's a world of difference between these players. I don't see any way Reid gives Payne that much money based on a contract year blowout while he was much less than that in previous seasons.

Reid would have let someone else pay Payne in free agency and taken the compensatory picks.

Maybe but Russ was a visible psycho about it when he was here. You could absolutely feel his fire and intensity watching on TV or live

I don't think this is true. Jawaan Taylor makes $20M a year as their RT and leads the league in OL penalties every year.

Reid's teams are loaded with more character issue players than any other in the league. By my count, you have also have Hunt, Rice, JuJu, Simmons, Kingsley S and, debatedly, Araiza. Probably more out there

Daron Payne would not have been kept given relative value at the position.

KC doesn’t have to worry about collapsing the pocket because they found Chris Jones as a #2 pick who arguably has been among the best DT after Aaron Donald retired.

Over time every team has some player(s) that end up with issues, there are no absolutes.

My main point is that teams like NE and KC usually don’t get stuck paying a Haynesworth type player big money.

Of those players in KC mentioned as having had issues you see Rice on a rookie deal and guys like Schuster, Hunt, etc on one year deals with team only options.

Belichick brought in guys like Antonio Brown at times too but never on a contract that tied up the team to any real commitments.

I'm sure that nobody knew that Hernandez was going to be a killer before he became one.

There were clues to his personality and behavioral problems during his time at the University of Florida but Urban Meyers and the Gainesville PD made them magically disappear.

Yep and scouts dig this stuff up

Belechick had a track record of signing players with character issues, who were viewed as problematic, especially when they were premium talent. Randy Moss, Corey Dillon, Josh Gordon, Rodney Harrison, LeGarrette Blount, hell, he even signed Albert Haynesworth after we moved on from him. Belechick was right in the thick of signing 'problem children' when he could get them at a discount and attempt to mold them in the 'Patriot Way.'
