Random Commanders Thoughts

I have no reason to believe that Harris & Co will not spend. The main problem currently is that Washington is 3 good drafts or so behind Philadelphia in roster construction.

I think ownership will be willing to spend too, but its not a given. The cap is 272 million. If you want to play the game of pushing money forward you have to be willing to spend a lot of cash. Lets say you spend 305 million. So you actually pay 33 million more in a year than the cap in the given year and that is going to make you books look worse in the short term and hurt the short term ROI. But the main way to push money forward is to pay a lot of it as either a signing bonus or option bonus so that money hits the cap over the course of the contract and that involves spending more actual money than the salary cap.

Another good thing that doofus dan is gone. These guys are going to do whatever it takes to win. Then they will start to really make money. They have enough money to spend the money and don't seem to be about using the team as a debit account.

What a novel concept.

I don’t see the ownership group being driven by or overly concerned with the short-term issues. I could be wrong but I haven’t seen any evidence to support it.

I think the Harris Group will spend the question is just when. Is now the right time? Maybe. But maybe not. You don’t want ti just spend to spend.

Also, the positions you spend at are very important.

I’m sure they would be happy to pay top dollar to a tackle. There isn’t one to spend on.

We need to spend smart, draft well, and then be ready to strike when the right opportunity presents itself.

This is more a question for Peters imo, there’s no doubt in my mind that part of hiring him was essentially writing a blank check as far as cap spending goes, to fit his plans over the years. During Daniels’ rookie contract coming off an NFCCG appearance and watching a division rival dice us up on the way to winning a Lombardi…we will spend.

Player salary spending is pretty small potatoes compared to the money these guys are worried about—the stadium renovations for just a few years of usage, the lobbyists they’ve already paid and continue to pay to smooth the way for the new stadium, training facilities, the new stadium itself, the potential promise of hosting future Super Bowls and Drafts, big media deals, etc. A few hundred million a year to secure a competitive roster and keep rebuilding the fanbase is a worthy expense when you operate on the financial level these guys do.

I have a feeling 'when Adam Peters says so' is the most likely answer.....

and i'm all for it.

Yeah, I should have been clearer, that’s kindof what I meant. Will they sons? Yes. But when Peter’s wants to spend, they’ll be ready. I’m just not sure it’s now.

I'm pretty sure it's now.

They were just in the NFCCG and with a couple better players here and there they had a chance to win that game.

Hell, take away the dumb fumbles and that would have been a close game.

Re-watching the Lions game on NFLN...I have it recorded, but I like the editing out of the huddles & such...this was just beautiful.
There aren't words to express how much support I needed at the time, and the team delivered. Jeez, I cannot wait for next season!!!

Yeah, I kind of felt bad for Lions fans, but that only lasted for a few minutes
I don’t feel bad for them because they have embraced Dan Campbell who I just can’t stand. (I acknowledge he’s a very good coach. I just find him grating and his game management infuriating.)

That said, they are my pick to have the biggest drop next year. And the second team for a huge drop is the Vikings. The Lions lost both coordinators, and Goff isn’t great.

The Vikings caught lightening in a bottle with Darnld. That won’t happen again.

I also think Atlanta is going to completely stink.

But the biggest drop from one of the top teams is going to be the Lions.

depending on health and our off season moves, I think the top of the NFC is going to be Eagles, us, SF, Tampa and Packers.

Bears could have a big step forward season if Ben Johnson is as good a head coach as he is OC.

I don't know. I kinda think that we are going to be the team that drops, maybe the Lions some too though. If not then Daniels really is the new Mahomes. I just don't think they can fix all that crap in 1 year and things aren't all going to fall in place twice.

I think the Vikings would still be about as good with somebody like Mariota, but they are likely to bank on McCarthy being good to go.

Seems like the falcons are going to be one of those teams that are stuck being mediocre 7-10 wins every year.

Penix should be pretty good though so they might improve if he is. I mean, Cousins was garbage and they still almost got in the playoffs.

I think Darnold has an out of body experience for about 10 weeks and played really well. Then realized he was Sam Darnold.

And while I was more Maye than Daniels before the draft, I thought the idea of putting a McCarthy in that same class was ridiculous. I could be proven very wrong and very stupid, but I think he’s going to struggle unless they really run the ball exceptionally well. If you think everything lined up for us, it really lines up for them.

The reason I don’t see us taking a significant step back is i tend to believe with Kliff and JD5, assuming health, they can whip up offense with just about any collection of guys.

The question is going to be defensively, can they improve.

I also don’t play the schedule game at this point in the season. Based on this years results it looks hard. But this years results don’t matter next year.

The real problem is unless they have a rash of injuries or are just worn out, the Eagles are going to be very good again. It stinks having a loaded team in your division when you are also good.

If you believe Sam Darnold is that bad (as I do), then do you think that maybe KOC had something to do with Darnold playing well, more than Darnold "played well for 10 weeks" and then "didn't?" I tend to think - granted I did not watch tons of Vikings football - that KOC was able to make Darnold look good until he couldn't anymore.

I guess we'll see what happens next year. I think KOC will be able to do something similar with McCarthy, personally. I think he is smart enough to understand the type of balance that can make these types of average QBs look good. I don't know if McCarthy will end up looking all that average under KOC.

I could be totally wrong. Even last year, with very shaky QB play/quality (and some inconsistency on D) the Vikings were losing by very few points in many games. I think McCarthy probably ends up being an upgrade on that, but it's unclear to me (I can only go by some things I read about McCarthy more than any film study or having watched him play). I tend to be a believer in KOC at this stage, after these past three years where I feel he showed me something.

KOC is a good coach and I’m sure he’ll get something out of McCarthy.

I just don’t see them being able to repeat that type of season without having an actual top 10 QB again. They won 14 games. I could easily see them in the 9-10 win category.

I think the entire division is going to take a step back.

Suzan Harjo. Will Harris invite her and other notable Native Americans to bless the new stadium and allow us to regain the Lombardi?

I think if I could suggest a rule change it would be that the cap hit for players sent to IR with a season ending injury would be cut in half. Feels like the cap should be about the players available to play and if they can't because of something that isn't the player's or team's fault it's wrong to penalize them. This would better enable teams to recover from major losses. Now, I'd make it so that you have to designate them as lost for the year to get the redemption so teams couldn't use this as a way to stash talent for later, but it bothers me that a team should be hamstrung because of how injuries absorb cap space.

I would imagine the NFLPA would be for it. Not sure if the owners would be.

The only question is, what happens when an 'underperforming' player with a bloated salary gets put on Season Ending IR for an injury that may be 'severe' enough to require a 4 week IR stint, but not severe enough it should take the entirety of the season to recover from?

I actually agree with you, despite the devils advocating above, something should be done where a team that experiences a devastating injury, is able to have flexibility to recover a competitive balance. I think it something that can be elevated where it requires player, and team cooperation in order for them to qualify, but it is going to open itself up to abuse no matter what.
