Random Commanders Thoughts

It’s about context though.

The refs absolutely played a pivotal role in the game.

Sure, we were going to lose anyways with the fumbles. But it’s a lot closer and respectful if the game is called fairly.
Lattimore could have easliy been called for PI on a play in or near the end zone. I know there were several other calls that went our way as well. It happens in every game and to boycott the Super Bowl when there have always been missed calls is kind of crazy to me.

I have been complaining about the tush push for years as well. It's totally unfair to the defense and takes away a very exciting play in the goal line stand. It used to be the play was dead when forward progress had been stopped. Now they don't blow the whistle and allow offensive players to blast the pile forward, and not just at the goal line, and again this is totally unfair to the defense.

On a side note I love how the announcers giving the RB credit for "refusing to go down" when he was simply being helped by other teammates as they drive the pile forward.

Some unidentified PI on Lattimore who gets his butt whipped on his own is apples to oranges when talking about two egregious calls that entirely changed the landscape of the game to the tune of 11 points in just a few minutes.

I think those boycotting are also referring to the latter game that was swung clearly by the zebras as well. With all the technology at our disposal, games are still called like it’s the 40’s and there is some mob guy calling in favors. It’s wild stuff.

You don't think a missed PI call in the end zone could not have changed landscape? Every fan of every team of every game ever played is convinced their team got the short end on calls. It's grown tiresome, especially when the team got beaten by 32 points.

They need to get rid of the tush push entirely. It’s not a football play, it’s a cheesy troll play mastered by the team with most troll fans.
I think they made a play up within the context of their understanding of the rules and said, "OK tell us what's wrong."

So, I don't like saying "No tush push" - but if the NFL said - "when the forward progress is stopped by a pile of humanity, the play is whistled dead" I think that would be the right way to end its usage. Within the rules as well. Years back the dive play was somewhat common - diving over the whole pile. You know, when pushing someone's nether regions was considered a strange idea, possibly.

There was no missed PI in the EZ that was anywhere near as bad as what screwed us. Eagles scored a TD on the drive you are talking about so it’s irrelevant. They call the obvious Saquon hold on that 4th and 5, and we get the ball on the 40 -it’s a totally different ball game. The Eagles drive ends with a FG attempt instead of a TD on that egregious Saquon penalty - it’s an entirely different ball game.

I get it, the team fumbled away its chances to win the game. But those first half events I described above also happened and played very heavily into the 32 point loss.

The tush push is littered with illegal formation, false starts, etc. among other infractions dependent upon the day. Yet it’s never called and now we’ve been told teams must roll out the red carpet and not even attempt to try and stop it. It’s 🤡 stuff.

Even if it wouldn't change the outcome of the game... who cares!

The hit on Ertz when he was five yards out of bounds should have been called.
A facemask and hit to the head of our QB should be called.
Spearing our QB in the head as he's giving himself up should be called.
An Eagle ripping the helmet off our player's head shouldn't be called against us.

To be clear, there were NUMEROUS penalties that were at semi-critical times.

Not all penalties and contexts are created equal.

Sainristil late hit on Barkley. Late? Yes. Egregious? No. Barkley hit hard? No. Do we see that play let go in many other circumstances? Yes. KEY TIME IN A CHAMPIONSHIP GAME? YES.
There is a lot of context. THIRD DOWN and LONG. The refs really took a big play in the game and made it their own there, and the circumstances demanded some real caution there. They exercised little.

Other plays:
- yes the PI. Again, similar problems, but in my mind that one is closer to yes, call it PI.
- the poking of the eye/grabbing of the facemask --> encroachment. By that logic, Jon Allen can eye gouge their center for a 5-yard penalty. Apparently, that's "Encroachment" right Hoaxuli?

No, there were too many. To just say it doesn't matter, isn't right - because when you don't call those penalties, there is more trash done by their team, and there is more demoralization (loss of confidence) on our guys. That psychological edge ABSOLUTELY MATTERS.

Yes, they got a few turnovers with good play. Guess what? The game was within 2-scores going into the fourth with all of that. The stupidity above just went on and on however.

Add Carter only getting 5 yards for gouging Biadasz eyes out for no reason other than he’s an absolute psycho that belongs in prison.

These are all true, and I didn't list any of them. I listed ones that had more critical times in my opinion. Yes, though - it was too far. I also hate blaming the refs. I'm glad the team won't.
I will say when it crosses a line, and I have that line pretty high.

It was crossed.

One of the most interesting decisions that will take place this offseason pertaining to our own roster is what we do with Jon Allen. The guy is due $17M next season. Despite how he did in the Lions game, I think you cut him

He is crossing the age barrier. I like him. He may restructure. Do you cut him if he restructures? I don't think so. There are a lot of factors at play.

Been wondering about that. Most of the season, I would have agreed with you and I still might, but there is a part of me that would like to keep Allen and cut Payne. There's something to be said for Allen fighting to get off IR and trying to hustle through the playoffs. That said, Allen does not seem to be the player he was earlier in his career and I doubt he's getting a second wind next season.

Bottom line going into the game, I said two things to those in my household:

In order to win today, we need the refs to call a fair game and we need to win the turnover battle.

Neither thing happened and that’s the only way you get to a 4+ TD blowout.

Yeah, we needed to play a clean game and not make mistakes. We made too many mistakes. Not just the turnovers, but lack of gap discipline, drops, etc. We played our worst game of the year. Maybe we lose that game anyway, but we didn't give ourselves much of a chance.

Hard for me to pin much on the coaches when both Quinn and Martin had a chance to make the tackle and wiffed horribly.
Those tackles were hardly for a loss, but sure, it didn't have to be a touchdown.

Still, the idea of "tendencies" -- it was not really well understood by this team against the Eagles, I felt. They really look, a LOT, at tendencies. That is why we DESTROYED them the one year, by running all of the time and completely breaking our season-long tendencies (Scott Turner year). I think that was their first L that year.

If we cut Allen it is only 6 million in dead money, I don't think he's back next year. He's set to cost 24 million against the cap next year and I'm not sure extending him to make the contract more team friendly is wise. He's been a soldier on some bad teams but he's hitting that age where play could fall off a cliff quickly.
