Sunday’s game vs Baltimore will have no global effect on how I currently view the team unless it is an embarrassing beatdown across all phases. The defense is still suspect to me despite the performances of the past two weeks. If that defense can be competitive against the Ravens run game and Jackson’s duel-threat abilities then my optimism will rise. Ultimately I am simply looking for the team to be wholly competitive. They don’t have to win.

The Ravens are a step up in class to be sure but as we see every weekend, every match up is unique and the result of any individual game doesn’t mean much in and of itself. Ask the Raiders - who beat the Ravens in their own house a few weeks ago.

I’m just going to enjoy every moment of this rebuild, including ups and downs, with this young QB and new team and staff and resist the urge to saddle the new regime with 30 years of my angst and disappointment.

I will enjoy the game as well. But this game will tell us if we have something real or just something fun this season
 
Can somebody explain to me why the local media has decided to give Jay “Im a stupid dumbass” Gruden an image rehabilitation job and continue to invite him on, sometimes in regular spots, for his “insight?”

I don’t understand. Guy was a bad coach here, he was not only a victim of circumstance. The only time the offense was good here was when McVay was the OC.

He’s on Keim’s podcast today. Keim is better than this.
 
I think Jay was a very good OC in Cincy and is pretty well respected around the league in terms of offensive knowledge. It’s always tricky evaluating offenses or defenses based on the HC because we really don’t know to what extent they are either micromanaging a unit or if they are giving the coordinator full decision-making leeway.

I know what you mean - I think the bottom line is that Gruden’s act got pretty old by the end of the run here and whatever good will he had sort of evaporated. But I do think he knows a fair bit about NFL offenses.

I’ll say this - if the choice comes down to more Jay Gruden or more RG3 - put me down for more Gruden all day long.

I saw the ‘hype’ video the team put out yesterday trying to tie JD to Griffin and it made me sick. There is literally nothing about JD that reminds me of Griffin.

Agreed. Don't care for Jay's insights. Yeah, he worked under the past set-up. But he still sucked. He was also NOT a leader of men. (And if you remember, there was that pic that circulated of him drunk with girls that were not his wife) There's a reason no other team has given him the time of day, or any major network. And conversely, Ron, who is at least respected as a person -- is a regular on NFL Network.
 
Yeah Jay doesn’t bother me. I’ve listened to his hits a handful of times on 106.7 and he’s actually pretty funny. Little anecdotes that confirm a lot of what we’ve all believed and seen in the past. For example, he was asked

“Would you ever consider going back to coaching the Washington franchise?”

“Depends who is the owner, and if he’s going to let me do my job”

Hearing a lot of his stuff is a behind the scenes type thing that really confirmed what we’ve all suspected, and really make me personally, question my own levels of frustration with previous coaches. No it doesn’t give them a free pass, but it really makes me question the true limitations.

I don't care about how bad an owner Dan was, he didn't make Jay run the same failed run play on first down 70% of the time for a -2 yard average over 4 years.

Jay was a bad play caller. He was a bad leader of men. He was a bad coach. He should have been fired YEARS before he was fired.

He gets off because of his "yuk yuk" style, he seems like he could be a good guy to get a beer with, and he can pawn off the blame on Dan and Bruce.

I'd remind people he got exactly one job offer after he was fired from here to be the OC for a lame duck coach in Jacksonville, where he didn't distinguish himself. He hasn't sniffed a job since.

The league past judgement on Jay as a coach. He stinks.

The local media likes him because he piles on Dan and is somewhat funny.

But his opinion is about as useful as Ron's. Which is to say, not at all.

I think him calling the same running play on first down for 4 years gave me PTSD.
 
I'd take either one of those over Vinny. At least they had success at some level of football - either coaching or playing.

Vinny's only claim to fame is being able to suck the chrome off the former owner's trailer hitch.
 
Yeah, in the history of no-brainers, this one is up there...
 
yeah, pretty much a no brainer.

Seems like the kind of guy that can fit with this coaching staff too. He was an extremely effective RB in a predominately RPO based system in 2012.
