Random Commanders Thoughts

In another post I went back to PFF and they had him graded out at near an 82 for the entire season.

He was the ONLY Washington offensive player that graded out above 75.

Of the other linemen, Leno Jr. was a 72.

The other linemen were in the range of what you deem replacement level performers:

Gates (63), Charles (57), Paul (38).
 
I saw this and immediately thought ‘damn Jim Harbaugh looks old’. 🤣

I hate the cowboys. I want to win. But I want to win every week. But I understand why folks want us to lose.
 
I want to win for the next 10-12 years, finishing 5-12 instead of 4-13 doesn't have any real meaning other than to have us bumped down AGAIN to a draft spot where SOMEBODY ELSE gets the premiere talent at QB and we are left to pick over the second tier players and veteran free agents that usually turn out to be a waste of time.

Remember 2020? The 2019 Redskins thought it was important to keep playing hard and beat Miami 17-16 to finish 2-14.

If they had lost that game when the competitive season was already over, Washington and not Cincinnati would have Joe Burrow today and we would be talking about a whole different situation with this football team.
 
That dolphins game in 2019 was in week 6. It as also the first game of the Callahan era as Gruden was fired the week before after starting 0-5. Telling an NFL player to lose in week 6 for a draft pick is pretty insane.

If you want to play that game, blame the week 13 win against Carolina as the reason they didn’t get the top pick in 2020. That gave them their 3rd win, which Cincy had 2 and I don’t know the tier breaker so maybe the win agains the Lions the week before too. Anyway, not only did they beat a 5-6 Carolina team, but it got Ron fired in Carolina and well, we know the rest. So that was a double whammy.
 
The smart move for Washington in that season was to do what Josh Harris is doing now, keep the head coach for the season no matter how poorly the team will finish and get that top pick and start over.

The idea this team with a change at coach in 2019 was going to do any better than #4 in the NFC East was pipe dream.

As it turned out that win over Miami WAS the reason Cincinnati was able to grab Burrow and change the trajectory of their franchise.
 
Congrats to Montez Sweat for his Pro Bowl inclusion (and thanks for giving Washington .5 Pro Bowlers).

Congrats to the fans for exposing that the accolade is nothing more than a popularity contest. Chase Young as an alternate? AYFKM?
 
Sweat was never a problem here in Washington. If Rivera had not given Payne a $95M contract we probably would have been able to resign him to a new deal and have Allen inside with Sweat as an outside threat.

But by tying up ALL of our defensive line cap money in the DT position it meant we were going to end up having to rebuild the DE position from the ground up with 2024 draft picks and mid-tier free agents.

It's one of the reasons I am not of a mind to pay TWO players at a particular position big contracts.

And you see that around the NFL, identify the anchor of the unit and then let other players go when their contracts are up and move on.

Dallas is set to pay CeeDee Lamb a huge deal but that means they won't be able to keep other receivers at high cap numbers so they bring on board guys like Brandin Cooks on short term deals to fill in and play opposite Lamb as well as younger draft picks on rookie deals.

In Kansas City, the Chiefs paid Chris Jones at DT a league high contract for the position. That meant the OTHER positions on the DL were going to be draft picks (Karlaftis) and veteran free agents willing to work for reasonable dollars, etc.

They weren't going to be able to pay another DT a $90M contract, it's just the way the cap works and how roster construction needs to be managed.
 
Adam Peters, Assistant GM of the 49ers for the past 3-4 years, as the next GM of the Washington Commanders? :)

Talking about it on ESPN radio this morning. Peters evidently takes a scouting approach (ie hands on) rather than being a guy that sits in an office and 'manages'.

May just be what we need here.

We definitely need to hire MORE SCOUTS.

The Chiefs have 14 scouts, at one point Washington had 8.

Baltimore has even more resources in the front office.
 
I heard somewhere (maybe Keim with ESPN’s 49ers insider) that John Lynch might move up in the organization which could lead to Peters staying in SF.
 
Lions player executive is also a guy on the rise. Excellent draft picks - one of best OLs in the NFL to support a pocket only passer, which is rare in the NFL these days.
 
I think the 49ers are a good model for building your team. They had one of the worse trade ups for a QB. Worse than what we saw here with RG3, because he at least had 1 good season. Lance got hurt in his 2nd game as the full time starter and SF didn’t miss a beat. They just kept building from where they were instead of blaming injuries for their lack of success. If Harris could get a guy from that organization, that is the way to go. Most people have to be reminded the 49ers blew it with Lance. It’s a footnote for them now. That’s what being successful brings.
 
From what I understand Kyle Shanahan made the decision to draft Trey Lance and John Lynch the GM supported him.

We don't know what if ANY role Peters had in that decision.

Don't forget that in 2019 Dan Snyder came into the War Room and demanded that Kyle Smith draft Dwayne Haskins despite his objections.

Does that reflect badly on Smith?

Also, let's go up and down the 49ers roster and look at the roster construction.

Bottom line at quarterback - they found a player in Brock Purdy that can play at a high level in their offense.

This is what Bobby Beathard did - rebound from a mistake and find a solution elsewhere - don't sit around for 5 years moaning about what might have been.

On offense - Deebo Samuel? George Kittle? Brandon Aiyuk? Are these examples of poor player selection and development?

Do trades for Trent Williams and Christian McCaffrey seem like mistakes in retrospect?

On defense:

Nick Bosa & Arik Armstead - high #1 picks that actually turned out to be real players and team contributors.

Fred Warner - all pro linebacker - selected in Round 3.

Dre Greenlaw - pro bowl linebacker - selected in Round 5.

Talanoa Hufanga - pro bowl safety - selected in Round 5.

So, this is a front office that doesn't make solid decisions when all is considered?

Bobby Beatheard built teams that won 3 Super Bowls here but he had mistakes. Traded high pick to Raiders for Malcolm Barnwell. Traded high picks for Gerald Riggs, who turned out to be a highly paid short yardage back after leading the league in rushing in Atlanta. A number of those #2 picks were busts as well.

But is that what is remembered? No. How about all of the pro bowlers and 10 year players we acquired, often late in the draft. How about 2 Hall of Famers in the team's first 3 #1 picks from 1980-83 - Art Monk, Mark May and Darrell Green.

It seemed as if the Trey Lance decision made largely by Kyle Shanahan was being hoisted up there as a reason to doubt the ability of an executive in the SF organization to come in and help Washington after 25 years of mostly horrendous personnel decisions.
