“The Redskins' offense is considered to be a difficult system to master quickly. Before he got hurt last year, quarterback Alex Smith appeared to still be thinking his way through some plays in his first season with the team, and Keenum likened studying the Washington offense, installed by former Coach Jay Gruden, to learning Portuguese — which many consider to be a complicated language to grasp.”

Sounds to me like Brian Mitchell was right about the need to simplify things in today's league where there is regular turnover on the roster from year to year and you have to be able to transition players.

All the more reason to scrap every ounce of that playbook next season, even if we do stay with O'Connell as OC. Jay and by default Brucifer have set us back several seasons on offense. Only Bruce would stick with a mediocre coach who's playbook is anything but qb friendly. Garbage ass front office needs replaced pronto!

If we don't raid a successful teams executive to be GM and let him pick the coach ole Dan will have a full on revolt next season. It'll make the 2019 attendance counts seem appealing

This whole thing is madness. What has Jay Gruden ever done with success that he demands such a complicated offense that his players must learn. If Keenum, a veteran who has been around calls it Portuguese, then you know it's too complex. Where is the adapting to your personnel? Where is simplifying and focusing on execution? How can your players be prepped for games if the system is that complex? This is just another example of being a terrible coach that's more focused on your system than on winning.

I will give credit where credit is due...Gruden's passing offense works, but not when the OL cannot give the QB time to develop or the QB doesn't have the vision to see the open man.

Pull a handful of random pass plays to watch.

On almost every pass play called, there was a man open. The problem was the OL could not keep the QB from missing the open man, or in Cousins case he went threw just reads 1 and 2, no matter how much time he had...leaving the man wide open downfield.

I know he needed to adjust certain areas of the game, but he was player proficient because the players weren't good enough in many cases, not because he didn't adjust to their strengths. The question could also be, why didn't the front office give him the personnel he wanted so he could get the most out of them, not have to adjust to the so-called strengths of the player?

When Gruden got here, almost the entire OL was a strong in the ZBS, should Gruden have run that system?

Look, Gruden needed to go, but like his predecessor, he was hand-cuffed by the geniuses in the front office who continually gave him talentless players. I don't think he'll ever succeed as a head coach in the NFL, but he will be a successful OC somewhere because he does have a system that works.

There's a fine line between adjusting for players, and running your scheme...I get that, but when I would watch the game and see a man wide open just about every play, it says something.

How many times was whatever open man you saw #5 in the progression? Or just there to clear a zone, not even part of the progression.

It's a copycat league. If the system was all that, it would be used everywhere. It's right up there Saunders 700pg playbook.

I'm sure it's both. When you have put together the #2 passing offense in the league and within three years have removed the top three WRs and the starting QB from that unit, it will cause problems for a coach that relies on the pass offense to win games.

I believe Gruden's offense is super-complex, probably too much so. That just makes the unnecessary turnover that much more maddening.

Which is why this team is such a heated mess.

Gruden was no great judge of talent.

He wanted Josh Doctson and Samaje Perine and the team drafted them and they were busts.

He championed several other players on the roster like Ryan Grant and Colt McCoy that were merely taking up space.

From Kirk Cousins to Alex Smith and the present quarterbacks no one could run this offense to Jay's satisfaction.

Since Cousins and Smith were productive elsewhere it seems the obstacle was Jay himself.

The most frustrating part to me is why on earth would you purposely make things more difficult than they need to be? It must be Jay's system terminology that's difficult to understand, I mean there's only so many formations and routes 11 personnel can run on a play.

Of course, the scrutiny on both sides is probably unbearable.

At the same time both are at fault and so I don't feel sorry for them.

Williams should have come clean on wanting a new contract.

Bruce should have come clean on other teams calling on Trent earlier in the year and been more willing to consider alternatives.

I don't think that asking Cleveland for 22 year old Denzel Ward, who was the #4 overall pick in 2018 can be considered realistic or purposeful discourse.

I miss the Gibbs I days were the team had like a dozen plays, practiced to perfection, tailored to the talents of the players running them, and run out of hundreds of formations to keep the other team guessing.
