Random Commanders Thoughts

The idea that Snyder was ambivalent about Griffin's future development after the drama and trade and everything defies my logic.

So yes, I believe Gruden was hired to develop Robert. And he failed.

You can make the argument that ANYONE would have failed. I don't know that I would argue that too much, but regardless, Gruden failed.

Some of the opinions I see here amaze me.

1. Our HC wasn't brought here to work with only one player. He was brought here to win SBs. It doesn't matter who the players are. Play the best, regardless of draft position. And win.

2. Griffin was playing poorly and making everyone else around him worse. He made the O-line look worse than it was, and he cost our WRs financially.

3. Anytime I played sports, our HC would single out anyone who did poorly. Drop a pass? Do 25 pushups. Come late to practice? Stay after and run a mile. In front of everyone.

I'm thankful that we have a coach with the balls to do that. Especially to the owner's favorite.

Per #3 - yes, your coach didn't stand in front a press conference with 100 live mikes going into great detail exactly how that player was failing.

Gruden should have kept his mouth shut to the press. Keep that shit behind closed doors where it belongs.

If we want to grade Gruden's ability to develop Griffin, we can that the whole situation was not a success sure. I still will not agree that Gruden's sole purpose to get hired by this football team was to develop Griffin, and the result thus far means he's failed his responsibility as the coach here. He may have been brought here because he was known as a good QB coach, and that once he got here, even he was incapable of 'fixing' Griffin so they moved on, sure. I'll agree with that. But until I see something from within saying THAT is the reason he was hired, therefore THAT is what he's judged on... I still have serious doubts.

Ok, I didn't say Gruden was brought in to ONLY develop Griffin, but I can't imaging anyone saying, with a straight face, that Griffin's development was not a MAJOR factor in hiring Gruden. Of course Gruden's supposed ability to work with Griffin was important.

My coach never had a microphone in his face.

No one here has any idea what was going on behind closed doors.

We do know that he was given preferential treatment, that many in the locker room wanted him benched, and reports were that Cousins looked much better in practice and training camp.

I'm sure many were pushed to their limits and were seriously pissed off. The O-line must have hated him, and you know the WRs had to be furious. He was costing them contract money and bonuses.

And when they get pissed, who do they bitch to? The HC.

Then the HC walks in and hears RG3 saying something stupid, and he went off. Not the end of the world.

Yeah, there's a huge difference between that and gathering the players and parents together after a game and blaming little Johnny's work ethic for the loss.

Nobody wants a coach like that.

That's right. All we know for sure is the head coach decided to go after his quarterback in press conferences.

The rest, we don't know. Which is why it was such an utterly stupid way to handle things.

Right. My point was that your coach apparently kept things behind closed doors. Probably for two reasons: 1) he was/is a professional and 2) no one would have given a shit about that sort of thing for a HS football team.

So you're saying that you don't mind that your HC flew off the handle at a press conference because he was pissed and didn't have a filter?

I guess that's one way to rationalize it.

As a side note, I find it hysterical that we're all OK extrapolating that the OLine and WRs obviously hated Griffin; but if someone suggests that Gruden was hired to fix Griffin, people go nuts.

its funny that 4 different people all have the same opinion that is anti yours...but you are AMAZED by ours.

1 - yeah, he was. He was hired to take over a team with a QB who was talented, a lot sunk in to making succeed, and trying to get the guy who did the same with Dalton to do so.

2 - making them worse? Nice try. Morris was fine, Garcon was fine. Who else are you talking about here?

3 - your past sports glory means as much as Gruden's arena league championships. You are also delusional as hell. You think you're going to make a 20 something millionaire superstar do pushups? HA!

1. He wasn't brought here for one player. If he made RG3 good, but sucked at everything else, we'd never make the playoffs and he'd be fired.

2. After 2012, he made everyone on the offense worse. Literally, every single player.

3. Hopefully the player gets put on blast and that inspires him to work harder. If not, he's gone. Like to Cleveland.

You asked for proof so I posted several articles saying he was brought here to fix Griffin.

That is where I get the idea that Gruden was brought here. 4 different articles, 4 different people, all saying what a bunch of fans also think. Gruden was brought here to coach Griffin, make him a pocket QB, and get him back on the right track.

He lied. Or he didn't know it. Or he didn't want to so he sabotaged the kid.

who has more speculation though? The articles or the people who don't want to believe it? I believe some outrageous shit myself sometimes and then deny other things when I don't want to believe them. All I know is that there is where I got the idea from.

Right, and I'm not saying it's 100% wrong either. I just see where as easily as you speculate based on reports, it can be refuted based on the sources. You might be absolutely right, but there is room for debate that the Gruden hire was about more then just 'fixing' Griffin.

Ok, so does that mean Gruden lied in his interview, or somehow got himself in here full well knowing that he was going to get Griffin out? Or could Griffin's failures at the position be as much of a factor as Gruden's 'shortcomings'

Good grief, people. When a team has a high-profile QB is it very important that the new head coach is able to work with the QB. This is basic stuff. When the star QB is young, player development is part of that relationship. This doesn't require a PhD in football to figure out.

Was Gruden brought in to work with Griffin and do nothing else? No. But nobody has made that claim.

Then why do people keep bringing up that he was brought in here to develop Griffin, therefore he's failed at what he was brought here to do?

Pass and Failure is speaking in absolutes... in grades, in This is why you are here, and you have not succeeded. When I talk about Gruden, I don't think he's failed as our head coach, but the way its thrown out there about how he didnt 'fix' Griffin, you'd think he was a mistake as a hire

I don't care.

Gruden, for whatever reason, was unable to work with Griffin. None of us know how much of that is Gruden's fault and how much was Griffin's and fortunately it doesn't matter.

All I do know is that when things weren't working out between the two Gruden decided to whine to the press about it. It was public. It was embarrassing. And hopefully he'll never do that again.

If you look at my post you'll note I said he failed at developing Griffin but since Cousins worked out it doesn't matter.

I don't know how that means he failed, period.

Semantics, ST. When I said Gruden failed, I mean he failed at developing Griffin. I'm not sure how that is disputable? To say his tenure here has been a success or a failure is premature, imo. Too early for that. I will gladly say that he is trending in the right direction after utterly ****ing up his rookie season as a HC. As I said before, if he continues to improve, we might have a real HC on our hands.

But that first year was an embarrassment.

Goal, if he had gone off on Polumbus or Leribeus, would people have been so emotional? Of course not. Many would have been happy he did it. Some would have laughed.

So it was the target of the criticism. The Savior. Not so much the delivery.

And when compared to all of the positives the team has accomplished, yelling at RG3 pales in comparison.

You have a very interesting debating style. Essentially, you ask a question then answer it and proceed as though what you have said is fact. It's not.

It is, however, off-putting.

I don't give a shit if the HC calls out the 4th string waterboy or the starting QB. Either way, it's unbelievably unprofessional.

McD, this is not ground-breaking news. Most people have heard the saying about airing our dirty laundry in public. Gruden's first year was not good. It's OK to admit that. I've admitted (this is now my third time) that he made incredible strides last year. It's OK to admit he was a disaster in year one. Hell, to hear you admit he made a mistake once would be a step in the right direction.

Yeah.....so people wouldn't have whined so much if it was Polumbus or some other underperforming player. This is common. Tebow mania, RG3, etc. It makes me want to never take a QB in the first round again.

As for his first season, I don't believe he was a disaster at all.

He was cleaning up a disaster. That was the year prior. Back-stabbing, leaks every Sunday morning, awful assistant coaching staff, etc.
