I don't have an iota of a doubt that Shanny is coming forward with this in order to 'clear' his name and a terrible picture about Robert, but damn there's a lot of smoke for there to not be fire. It's a bad situation on all parties involved.

All of those parties probably deserve some of the blame.

It's never a good look when the father comes out to the media and says he doesn't want him to be a running QB.

Was shocked to see Jason Reid write an article bashing RG3. /sarcasm

The whole situation was created by everyone involved. RG3 certainly wasn't innocent, but neither were Shanny, Dan, etc. I feel bad for Griffin. He's moved on and is hoping to restart his career and here comes Reid and Shanny back to bash him again an rehash old stories. Let the kid move on and continue his career. There's probably a reason Shanny is out of the league.

Yeah, Mike's not doing himself any favors at this point. Hard to see how continuing to air this stuff, regardless of how accurate, is helping his cause to either get another job or get into the HOF.

That he expects anyone to believe he didn't know how badly hurt Robert was in the playoff game is just stupid. The man was playing on one leg, and everyone but Mike seemed to know it.

And perhaps even more damning, at least to me, is that even the part about the RG3 Ultimatum scenario, which I believe happened pretty much like he says it does, doesn't shine any kind of favorable light on him. If I'm a head coach, and I've won Super Bowls and have that kind of cred in my pocket, the minute my QB comes to me and starts laying down the law, and I'm thinking the owner is on board with it, I'm walking straight into the boss' office and walking out a few minutes later with a clear understanding that either 1) I'm in charge of the players and the offense, period or 2) I'm out the door that same day with all my guaranteed millions and everyone in the world is going to know exactly why. Instead, he apparently abdicated his balls and stuck around.

Weird dude. Weird chapter in Skins history--and that's saying something.
 
Yeah, the guaranteed contract removes any excuse to try and blame the owner for personnel moves. Shanahan had complete control. That he didn't exercise control is on him.

And even though he has to work under a GM that has final roster say, which Shamahan did not, Gruden has no excuses either. He has the guaranteed contract, and therefore the authority, to play whomever he chooses. He had it the second he signed his contract.

Where you and I part on Gruden is that while you (and others, I know) criticize him for not benching Griffin right out of the box, in his first year as coach, I tend to credit him for actually trying to make it work with Robert, and then having the guts to do exactly what we're criticizing Shanahan for not doing, and drawing a line in the sand his second year and going with Kirk. This despite the knowledge of how that move would be viewed, and the firestorm it was going to create whether it worked out or not.

My feeling is there are very few rookie head coaches anywhere, in any sport, who would have been willing to throw down on the kind of immediate "total control" option in the kind of atmosphere Gruden inherited with RG3 and Dan Snyder. Ultimately I see Jay Gruden having played his cards on this one right; the most compelling argument for that being how well it worked out---Kirk played well, and more importantly, the team jumped from 5 to 9 wins and now heads into year three of his tenure with realistic expectations of contending for a playoff spot again.

None of this is new, I know--I've seen others advance the same idea. I guess I just fail to see the justification in continuing to take Gruden to task over something that has turned out as well or better than we, or even he, probably could have hoped.

I was very frustrated with how Gruden handled Griffin, but looking back, I'd say he did a pretty good job given the situation he was handed as a 1st year head coach. He absolutely has benefited with the addition of McCloughan, but damn if he didnt walk into an episode of Jerry Springer.
 
Some of you are pretty quick to reduce multi-layered subjects to a single facet, and equally quick to speak for the entire board in defending your particular take on it.

I'm not sure anyone truly put the entire failure of the season on Griff. I think Gruden absolutely made some major mistakes, and the public airing of Griffin was a piss poor choice to put it lightly. I also think he was left with a sewage like situation and on this side of the tunnel, it appears we're in a better situation then how it was when we started with him. While the route may not be favorable, the progress is undeniable.
