If he had the humility to even take a serious look at his situation, he would have had his agent run hat in hand to Kansas City to talk to Andy Reid and the Chiefs about backing up Alex Smith for a couple/few years. He cannot play QB in this league the way he did his rookie year, any longer. Reid turned McNabb into a good QB schemed properly, I am convinced that is the only formula for success for the young wanna be pocket passer. Going to Cleveland to have the opportunity to start looks a lot like the start of the past 2 seasons here in Washington.

NFL players have short careers. He's already outlived the average NFL timespan of 3 years. So he should just waste another year or 2 sitting on the bench, hoping to get a chance again? I don't fault the guy for taking the best chance at being a starter in this league. And how do we know that KC didn't say, "thanks, but no thanks"? If Cleveland was the only offer he had, then why not go there and resurrect your career? It's not like Hue Jackson is some clueless coach when it comes to QBs.

Seattle? Went 5-11, 7-9 (won Division), 7-9, 11-5, 13-3 (won Super Bowl). Not 2 years, but from 5-11 to Super Bowl Champs in 4 seasons.

Edit: Also Carolina couple of times. 1-15 in 2001, went to the Super Bowl in 2003. 2010 went 2-14, in 2013 they went 12-4. 7-8-1 in 2014, went to the Super Bowl last year.

I don't have a problem with being deliberate.

I have a problem with continual bandaids at some key positions meanwhile we spend dollars and picks elsewhere.

We have spent so much money on receivers and picks/dollars at OLB.

Time to get a NT, S and center that are better than merely 'average', etc.

So, what's your proposal for 2016 for the NT position ?
I hear your preaching against the band-aids, but I don't think I've heard you give a specific and better alternative for this year.
I'm against the practice of continual band-aids as well, but what better option than Pot Roast, do we have right now at this very moment ?

Yes. Absolutely our team really did improve.

With six games remaining in the season we had already matched our win total from the previous year. Our WRs were better. Our pass protection was better. Our defense was better. Our special teams was a LOT better.

Going from 4-12 to 9-7 ... that counts. That is improvement. Kirk Cousins may have been the difference between 6-10 and 9-7 or somewhere in between, but the team was better. And, with the exception of the running game :), it was specifically better in the areas that McLovin targeted in the draft.

Do I think we'll win the division again? Dunno. But yeah, we have a shot. Yes the division sucked last year. Is it going to be significantly better next year? Two new coaches and the Cowboys, who are banking on Romo The Saviour, who has managed to produce exactly one winning season in the past six years.

I've been pretty darn critical lately, but even I can see that just because we didn't see a turnaround like the '99 Rams, that doesn't mean we're headed in the wrong direction.

He'll be cheaper because he'll be 36 when the season starts. Unless we are hurting for cap space there is no reason to trade young for old. Are we hurting for space? I honestly don't know.

Pierre Garcon is a $10M possession receiver with one year left on his contract.

Boldin is also a possession receiver at this point in his career but is also a very physical player, which meshes well with the greyhounds we have in Reed and Jackson.

At 36, my guess is we can sign him for a hit around $4M and save a bunch of cap space.

If we release Roberts as well we could save $13M under the 2016 cap before adding Boldin, etc.

Garcon is WAY overpaid for what he is delivering at this point and he's at an age where he's not going to be here when the Redskins are really ready to contend.

I have absolutely no problem with Mike posing the question. It's a good question. I just happened to give an answer. :)

Cutting Garcon will cost us $2.2 mil against the cap, so we 'save' $7.8 million when we cut him. Then we sign Bolden, who made $6 mil last year, and the year before that, and the year before that, to a magical $4 mil contract, netting us $3.8 million. So I guess the question is, do we want a 30 year-old who would be playing in this same system for a third straight year and with this QB for a second straight year, or do we want a 36 year-old who may or may not experience a drop-off in play and save $3.8 million in cap space?

I'd take Garcon. This is Year Three. We should expect to be Ready To Contend this year, or at least be very close to it.

Or hell, here's a crazy idea: Maybe we could ask Garcon to restructure? Is that something we still do? :)
 
I don't really care what Garcon was hired to do four years ago. I don't really care what his personal goals were. I don't care what he counts against the cap unless we are in some sort of cap crisis this year. Those are all off the field things.

What I do know is that on the field, our WR corps (and Jordan Reed) was the strongest unit on the team. I know Kirk Cousins knows he can work with the guys we have, and he does a pretty darn good job when he has them.

I'm not sure I'm ready to upset that apple cart for a few mil in cap space, for a guy in his late thirties. The one thing that really really really worked well on the Redskins last season was the passing game. I don't think we need to fix it if it ain't broken.

OK, I'll play along. Seattle had come from a nice run to the Super Bowl to losing some key players and going into a slump, then rebounding to Championship level. So that's a bit of cherry picking, don't ya think?

And Carolina?

Again, tr1 was talking about 1-2 year turnarounds and I have to admit I have been frustrated seeing turnarounds and surprise teams making a run in short periods of time...thinking, why not us? But what else could he possibly want after a turnaround with a new GM? I mean, in his 1st season we went from cellar dwellers in that sorry division he spoke of, to hosting a playoff game. That's a turnaround...he brushes it off as something else. Talk about wearing your blinders...seeing things the only way you want to see them.

If it's about money, then no...I do not fault him for that. But if the kid wants to get better as a QB, at some point he must face his limitations and ask for help. Resurrecting his career in Cleveland? Come on man.

So where would you have liked him to do it? Do we even know if he had other offers?

If you were offered a job as a VP of a company or an intern at another, and the VP job gave you an opportunity to do what you wanted, and the intern job guaranteed nothing, which would you do?
