Well, if I knew I was not ready for prime time, I would be true to myself and learn more before tackling that hurdle. I am in that position right now with my own career, but I am in my 40's now and have lost much of my youthful hubris...much, not all.

Like I said, I would have gone straight to Andy Reid. Instead...he shopped himself as a starter, only had 2 serious interests and ended up on a team that is in worse shambles than the Redskins have ever seen. I would choose not to go to a career killer, instead...I would like to be a VP somewhere, but would take a lesser position if there were long term opportunities. However, the choices for him were not VP or intern, more like VP or middle management...huge difference. Maybe he is thinking long term, maybe he still thinks he's good enough to bring a championship to a team that has not understood winning in almost 30 years. My thoughts? He's not even good enough to help Denver win another championship with that defense, and we know what their QB's looked like last year.

I just have no issues with guys wanting to earn as much as they can and guys wanting every opportunity to play in this league. Sure, he could totally flame out in Cleveland, but at least he would go down swinging. He could have gone somewhere else and been a backup, but there's no guarantee he could get a starting job with that team. Sure, he could have gone and sat behind Alex Smith. But what if Smith stays there for another 2-3 years? What if Reid leaves in 2-3 years? Then what happens to Griffin? I don't fault the guy for taking the most direct chance at being a starter in this league again. There's only 32 of those positions open. If you're offered one, I think it would be hard to turn down.
 
Steady vet that helps a position which was a little thin last season, they all can't be big splash signings.
 
It was either spend a draft pick or take Vernon Davis. And he's an upgrade over Paulsen.

Although it's only a one year contract, it's probably a better option than what we had to do last season. For a stretch there it seemed like we were signing a no-name TE nearly every week to come in and try to contribute.

At worst, it's like what I do when I'm drinking. Preventative aspirin. It's not like I have a headache right now, but better safe than sorry.
 
I'm not mad about signing him, I just don't see Davis having a big impact. He's nice insurance to have, but at this point in his career, I don't think I would want him as more than that.
 
Not sure the team expects more than that but strange things can happen over a season, hard to believe that Reed was essentially the last one standing that was effective. (the way we want one to be)
 
It also appears that Pot Roast is about to be signed. Nothing official yet.

That's a nice depth signing. He's a solid second TE to have. Hopefully he didn't cost too much.
 
The Redskins options at TE behind Reed were poor. Three guys in varying stages of coming back from major injuries, none of whom has much of a resume as a pass catcher or starter in the NFL like Davis does.

As long as the deals for guys like Davis are kept fairly short, one year with perhaps an option for a second season, I am fine with it.
 
Pot Roast to the Patriots. They gave him a 2 year deal, and we were rumored to only offer him one year.
 
After Steven & Fred maybe this is the Davis that will light it up for us.
 
I am not sad to see Knighton move on.

Remember last offseason? Chris Baker brings him in for a visit to the team, Knighton is supposedly excited to play with his lifelong friend and says he is looking to show the Redskins he is worth a long-term deal.

Then he comes to training camp over 360 and plays most of the season out of shape.

Now, in the past several weeks we learn from Baker via tweet that Knighton has been losing a lot of weight and is down to 330.

Great.

But based on his own comments after signing with the Redskins, that is what we were expecting from him LAST YEAR when we paid him $4M.

Everything with this guy seems to be 'just wait until tomorrow', except that 'tomorrow' never comes and the play never matches the hype.

That's why Jacksonville let him go, Denver let him go and ultimately McCloughan was not going to give him TWO years on faith that he was going to be in top shape and ready to go.

We need to use the draft to find a 22 or 23 year old DT that can anchor this line for the next 6-8 years.

Knighton at 30 is already past his prime and is likely going to be part of a rotation in New England.

We need more than that here.

Ditto at safety. We need more than the bandaid.

That's why I don't want to bring Dashon Goldson back. He was OK as a bridge for 2015, but we need to move on in 2016 and let the 33 year old go.
 
Yep, we haven't had a bunch of success possessing a dominant D-lineman & definitely not by drafting one. For sure due there. McLuvs should plug some serious holes in the D with this draft.
 
No doubt Knighton is taking this year more seriously than 2015 with the Redskins.

He will show up to OTAs and camp in FAR BETTER shape than he was in for the Redskins or the Broncos before that.

He knows that Bellichick will cut him if he doesn't meet expectations.

My continuing question for Knighton is why not show up to play with Chris Baker in 2015 in something approximating reasonable shape?

McCloughan was right not to give Knighton the extra year cushion here because he didn't show enough in 2015 to think he would be a difference maker in 2016 and 2017.

Meanwhile, we can draft DL in the deepest draft at the position in 10 years and acquire an inside player that counts 1/2 to 1/3 as much as Knighton will count for NE under the cap.
