Random Commanders Thoughts

The Davis signing is interesting (or possible signing). He really isn't the player he used to be a couple years ago. His numbers have been on a steep decline. In 2013, he had 52 receptions. The last 2 seasons, he has 54. And it isn't like he's been injured and missed games, he's played in 29 of 32 games. It was pretty clear in Denver that he couldn't get a grasp of that offense and build chemistry with Manning/Osweiler. In 6 games, he had 18 catches.

Now, maybe his blocking is still on point and that's why we're interested. But if Reed went down and Davis became the starter, I wouldn't expect Davis to put up anything similar to what Reed is capable of. Nice depth? Sure. But I don't think Davis can be relied upon like he once was earlier in his career.

Actually don't have a feel about Davis at this stage of his career.

Sometime back, wasn't he in 'hot water' for bad attitude and turned it around spectacularly.

Along with any 'football' left, Scot might also be thinking he's another good locker room guy, replacing some of the leadership lost to turnover.

Davis had a wicked case of the dropsies last year in San Fran. Not sure if that migrated to Denver with him, but he also didn't see a lot of targets, best I could tell. Didn't seem to get that Offense.

The Redskins have just disclosed that Niles Paul will be moving to FB at times this season. It saves a roster spot, and it can open up a better passing option than we had last season.

If that's the case, then a Davis signing would make some more sense.

That, and I'm sure Scot doesn't want a repeat of last year. We must have had 5 FA TEs come through the roster because of injuries.

I agree that if Griff does not sign with Cleveland, then he may need to head north to the CFL for a couple of years.

This news jives with what I posted in here last month. Some pundits are saying his career is all but over. Not sure I agree with it, but we can't deny what the FA market is doing.

Vernon Davis? We'll see. Behind Jordan Reed, only Derek Carrier made some noise. Having Niles back is huge. Carrier may not be ready to play this fall. I think better options can be found in the seventh round and amongst UDFAs.

Worked a trade show today photographing Gary Williams as he signed autographs. Prior to the signing session, he spoke for about 30 minutes so I was taking some candids in the crowd when I noticed a familiar face in the back of the room. I had to see for sure if it was who I thought it was so I walked to the back of the room to see that Gary Clark was there, too.

I din't want to be that guy so I let him watch the speech and left him be. As the speech was ending, I went up to him and said, "Gary Williams has been up there talking about his National Championship with Maryland for 30 minutes and all I can think about is the 2nd Quarter of Super Bowl 22."

I am happy to say that quip generated that huge grin of his. What a great guy.

What happened to the 12-15 teams that were reportedly interested in Griff before he was released, including Jerry Jones, who openly and publicly gushed over him ?
Did they all just offer him a backup position, which he wanted no part of ?

Maybe find something in the National Football League forum, with the rest of the non-Redskins news.

Who do you think leaked that?

3 things to never believe at this time of year:

1. "We never offered that player up for trade." Translation: We offered him up, but no team would give us enough in return.

2. "I was never really going to leave this team. This is my home." Translation: I tried FA, but no other team would pay me.

3. "There are 14-15 teams interested in player X." Translation: I'm the agent, and I'm trying to create the appearance of demand.

Griffin to the Browns. That Browns/Skins game at FedEx just got really interesting this season.

damn..

so, they're going to sign Griffin AND draft a QB at #2. That is not good for Griffin.

Maybe? I had heard they weren't super impressed with Wentz today at his Pro Day, which could be why they decided to sign Griffin today.

Not to mention they have three other QB's on their roster. That said, this was the only place where he really had a shot at competing for a starting QB position.

I doubt Hue Jackson is thinking about Robert as a sure long-term starter, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them grab a QB at #2 in the draft. They had zero legit QB's as of this morning ... now they might have one, if Robert shows development in the pocket game ... but still just one. If I was in their shoes, I'd head into camp with Robert, a draft pick, a veteran fill-in or two, and let it play out.

Glad Robert is going to get a chance. Going to be interesting.

They could also trade down and get another pick or three. They need bodies. As many around here have argued in the past, build the lines 1st, go with a vet QB for now, and draft a possible franchise guy a year or two from now. If they hit on their choice of vet QB, they can spend more time/money on other positions.

That's solid. It's a pretty spare cupboard up there from what I gather ... not necessarily the best situation to throw a new/young QB into. McCown, assuming they keep him, probably emerges as the September starter, but if things go as they well might, and the team hits midseason struggling, we could well see Robert get a chance to show the world he's learned a thing or two since we last saw him on the field.

Would anyone be surprised if it worked out his Browns debut just happens to come against the Skins, on a nationally televised game? When they're coming off a bye and we're coming off a short week?

Theater, baby.

Hmmm, good luck to RG3!

They lost players on their O-Line this offseason. So, it will be a tall task, no matter the QB.

Now does sanfran unload kap to Cleveland for a 2nd and Griff
