The Redskins are in good position cap-wise to be able to go into free agency and make some impact moves for the defense.
McCloughan is not going to sign 30-31 year old players to big-time contracts, but those 26 and 27 year olds that form the 'mid' tier of solid starters on your defense are available at some critical spots like safety and the DL.
Part of the cap strategy has to be 'selective' reduction in the current cap numbers for a host of players on the team that appear to have limited to no leverage with the team.
Dashon Goldson's $8M cap hit has to be significantly reduced. At 32, if he leaves Washington he is looking at a veteran minimum type deal in unrestricted free agency. For his leadership value on D, the Redskins can still offer him more than that but safely reduce that hit to the $3-$3.5M range.
Chris Culliver's guaranteed money was voided by his one game suspension last season. Coming off a late season ACL/MCL tear and not expected to be ready for the regular season, he seems a prime candidate for a reduction in his contract to stay. Again, with his injury problems and past off the field issues in SF, he is not likely to get a significant offer in free agency from another team.
In other areas, we need to release Andre Roberts, Perry Riley Jr, and think about either restructuring or simply upgrading over Kory Lichtensteiger and his $4M cap number.
On the OL it is ironic that CSN Mid-Atlantic articles and others were talking about finding an upgrade for Spencer Long at LG or moving him to center while at the same time Pro Football focus ranked him as the #28 guard out of 62 starters in the league in his FIRST year on the field at age 24.
We have so many other holes to fill one of my last areas of focus would be replacing a guy that graded out in the top half plus at his position despite no previous NFL experience at the position at such a young age.
Depth for the OL? Yes, of course. We need to clear Josh LeRibeus, Tom Compton, etc. out as listed depth on the OL as they are marginal NFL players whose performances even in limited doses has the team at a clear disadvantage.
Ty Nsekhe seems like a capable #3 tackle behind Williams and Moses. Another guy McCloughan pulled off the junk heap last year.
