Random Commanders Thoughts

lets hope so....2 QBs gone would suck and put us WAY down in the hole.

Let me just say now, if the Redskins manage to somehow alienate and drive away the first QB to get them to a division title in 13 years, and then proceed to build up and then let go of his replacement, the second QB to get us to a division title 3 years later, they are quite literally the worst-run team in the history of sports.

And even I give them more credit than that. He'll be back.

They don't need to talk to franchise him. Seems to me all the leverage is on the teams side.

Oh, I agree. I believe a deal will take place once his agent stops posturing and reality sets in. The fact is that the team has the leverage. Even if he is franchised he will still have to perform to get another opportunity at the big, long-term money.

If we franchise him we still have till June to work out a long term deal. Franchise tag is a gamble for both sides. If he plays well his cost will go up. Have a bad year and he loses money.

It is in best interest of both sides to get a deal done.

If we are to believe Scot when he says contract talks are not discussed with the media then where is this info coming from?
I suspect Kirk's agent but I also don't believe that the entire Skins' organization is totally leak proof either.

Scot also said that he'd prefer not to tag Kirk for reasons mentioned above but the tag was brought in to keep agent's and players from holding the team hostage without recourse by the team.

Scot also said he will not break the bank for a single player. The parameters have been set for the team side of things and the tag is an option.

Like most, I pretty sure it will get done one way or another once Kirk (or his agent) realizes that the Skins is the best place for him to be and succeed. He seems to have the support of the fans, players, coaches and the current FO and all will tolerate any missteps during the season because he's 'ours'.

Can't imagine the same going to another team where he might be on the spot as a 'savior type' where any thing less than so called 'perfection' will undermine his support.

Of course these 'intangibles' probably don't play into hardcore negotiations, although they probably should for sanities sake.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the franchise tag is there to prevent losing a player, not there to sign players to contracts. That is, its not desireable for either the team or the player. I believe this is how most if not all teams approach it. Use it only if you have to.

As far as Cousins, Mike&Mike show was saying why would you franchise tag a player at a position who is not a "franchise" player?
Which I thought was a good point. On the other hand if we are going to "over pay" for a player, its better to have a short term deal than a long term one.

The tag options allow NFL franchises an extended bargaining period for a player that is key to their success
A hedge against a free agent guy just walking to sign elsewhere leaving the team powerless to do anything about it.

Take a look, several options.
An "exclusive" franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position as of a date in April of the current year in which the tag will apply, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. Exclusive franchise players cannot negotiate with other teams. The player's team has all the negotiating rights to the exclusive player.

A "non-exclusive" franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five cap hits at the player's position for the previous five years applied to the current salary cap, or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater. A non-exclusive franchise player may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if the player signs an offer sheet from another team, the original team has a right to match the terms of that offer, or if it does not match the offer and thus loses the player, is entitled to receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

Under the Capped years a team can designate one additional player only as a transitional tag. A transition player must be offered a minimum of the average of the top 10 salaries of the prior season at the player's position or 120 percent of the player's prior year's salary, whichever is greater. A transition player designation gives the club a first-refusal right to match within seven days an offer sheet given to the player by another club after his contract expires. If the club matches, it retains the player. If it does not match, it receives no compensation.

Tag Kirk with the exclusive, he's here or is out of football for the year but if he plays he'll get some nice bucks for the season, followed by the same crap again going foward.

Whether or not Kirk is considered a 'franchise guy' by anyone outside of the organization is irrelevant, just an opinion by 'pundits'.

Eh, I'd go non exclusive, if they can't get a team friendly long term deal done. He's not worth as much to anyone as he is us. Nobody will pay him more than us. If someone is that stupid, take the two 1st's and don't look back.

My comment, 'Tag Kirk with the exclusive ' was more of a what-if and result, not my opinion as to what they should do.

What I think they should do is get him signed to a team friendly, incentive laden contract, probably ain't going to happen tho is it?

You pulled that right off the NFL channel, didn't you? :)

EDIT: Good Lord, I can't stop watching this. It's mesmerizing and horrifying. I think I'll be using it quite a bit on this board from now on ...

scuttlebutt is that he is looking for around 20 mil per year.....I really hope that is just gossip and not the truth. there are 3, maybe 4 QB's worth that much and his half a season doesn't warrant anywhere near that.

Agree Mike. Cousins isn't worth that much, IMO. Yes, he led us to a division title. But in was on the back of a nice 10-game stretch. One really good 10-game stretch in the 4 years he's been here. We've seen first hand QBs that put together a nice season and then can't follow it up (i.e. Griffin and Schroeder).

I have no problem tagging him this year and giving him another year to prove his worth. I just have a hard time handing a guy a long-term deal based on 1 10-game stretch. That's how teams get into trouble.

I think the price tag on legit NFL starting QB's is whatever the market dictates. Kirk's agent and the Skins are both actively assessing what they believe the market is in 2016, and part of that process will involve seeing what the tea leaves look like as the various deadlines approach. Frankly, I don't think the total value of the deal he'll likely end up getting will be the key issue---I think how it is packaged, between guaranteed, salary, incentives, bonuses, etc., will be the part that keeps the deal from being made before the media and most fans go apoplectic.

If I had to predict today, I'd say a deal will get done. But because of the way the process works, there will be much gnashing of teeth before there is much rejoicing among the faithful.

I think Om is correct, at this point they are ironing out guarantees and how it will affect the cap. In the meantime, the media will get us all worked up in a frenzy with their narratives to sell clicks and papers.

I expect residuals.

He'll probably get 20 mil a year.......on paper. The guarantee will be much less and team friendly. It's too risky for him to play on under a tag. Much more so than for the team. He'd be facing the potential for injury or a regression that costs him money. Even if he plays good but a bit below how he finished, it would cost him. They'll come to terms. This is business as usual for NFL negotiations.

I hate to be "that" guy on the board but.....

The Rams released Chris Long today. Should we kick the tires on him?

I think Junior Gallette is better than Long. Plus, isn't Long injury riddled (Of course, as I wrote that, I realize Gallette is coming off injured reserve for the whole season).
