No "people" here that I know of. I'm not even sure I'd like him as a coach on the team.
 
Betcha Scherff could fill in at TE, in a pinch, if everyone else is hurt.
And I bet no-one on the other team would enjoy tackling him, if he caught a ball, nor would they want to get in his path, if he was rumbling downfield as a run-blocking TE.
 
Cooley was compromised by a bum knee. He lost speed and declined as a receiver while his blocking was nothing special to begin with.

The guy admitted he was bored and nothing provided the adrenaline that football does.

Makes sense.

But if I am a coach of a team coming off a 4-12 season am I interested?

Probably not.

This is likely to be a one year gig and someone else who's 23 or 24 doesn't make the roster for a 33 year old with no future?

I doubt you would see McCloughan approve signing Cooley even if others wanted to add a popular guy, etc.
 
well, considering Hoss (or whatever his name is) is our starting TE I dont see it being that bad of an idea bringing him in to camp at least. He wont get more than vet minimum by ANY team with half a brain. And if he is serious and is at NFL level of competition than we just made a great deal. If not, we lost 750K and its not a big deal.
 
Somehow....given what has transpired...I don't see Cooley being brought in so long as RGIII is the starter.
 
It sounds like he's basically trying to stick anywhere someone "needs" him come week 2.

Let's sign someone during final cuts that Scot feels may have some upside to develop.

We are in a rebuilding year.

Except we don't have a tight end at the moment who is any of those things and you can add healthy. If cooley can come in (not saying he can) and spark the team with excitement and energy for cheap it makes sense to at least try.
 
Honestly Mike, I'm not sure it does. There is a 0% chance Cooley contributes anything after this year, and about a 5% chance he contributes anything meaningful this year. So why not go take a chance on an UDFA? Sure, that kid probably won't stick either, but at least we will have taken a chance on someone who could potentially stick.

I'm sure Scot is scouring the waiver wire for other teams' garbage, and won't be surprised if we pick up a TE or two in the coming weeks. I'll be floored if one of them is Cooley.

we are in training camp and I have yet to hear of any calls or even any rumors of any UDFA coming to see us. I am not really sure why you say there is 0% chance of him contribution...that doesn't seem right if he is in playing shape and can learn the playbook. He may not be the best option but we don't seem to have many but some guy named Hoss.
 
I wouldn't mind seeing Cooley lace em' up again. Last year I would have been 100% against even a look.... the biggest difference is the guy who's business card at Redskins Park says General Manager on it. Had Bruce brought him in... I'd feel more like it's geared toward jersey sales... if Scot brings him in and signs him, I've got more confidence that he'll actually be able to contribute something ON the field. Why not bring him in and take a look at him?


I did see an article today suggesting Cooley only threw out the idea of a 'return' as a bargaining chip against the radio station, to aid in his negotiations for a new contract at 980. Not sure how valid but if true, it answers the question why he hasn't worked out for any teams.
 
There was a "rumor" that the Cardinals were interested... maybe driven by the Cooley camp? Supposedly he missed a day or two going down to Az.

Last time we saw Chris on the field, he was amassing one catch in nine games in 2012 ... on the heels of eight catches in five games in 2011.

My enduring recollection of him in 2012 was commenting that he looked like he was running in quicksand out there. I was going to post a video of his highlights from that last year or two to support that ... but ... there aren't any.

I know he's not for everybody, but I generally love me some Cooley on the radio--not so much the attention-seeking stuff, but his game-film player breakdowns during the season are money. But the idea that he has gotten faster in the last three years, and at 33 might be the best option Scot M could come up with to fill out the TE roster while Reed, Paul and Co. heal up, makes my hair hurt.
 
We can blame that as much on Shanahan as we can anyone else.
 
Huh? Shanahan put the anvils in Cooley's shoes?
 
no, he didn't play because of Shanahan. Its hard to have any highlights or get your speed up when you aren't in the game.
