-O line looked great. Callahan is doing a hell of a job. Sherff doesn't look like a #5 pick right now, but he will imo in a year or two. He was getting pushed back a little in the running game, but was still able to stay in-between his man and the hole. He did do a good job getting to the 2nd level and pass pro.

-Qb's, Rb's and Wr's all looked good.

-D line doesn't look improved at all. No push from any of them.

-D Hall may be done. I've seen an achilles injury end a lot of careers, especially older athletes who depend on speed and quickness. Definitely someone to keep an eye on for the rest of preseason.

-Smith and Murphy looked good at OLB.

-Special teams doesn't look special at all. Don't have a good kickoff guy. A Roberts should be banned from returns and punt and kickoff coverage was just okay.

-Injury to Niles is devastating. The next question is what do you do with J Reed? I say you nip it in the bud right now and cut him, especially if it looks like it he didn't do anything in the off season to better himself. You have to be crazy to put the team in a position where you have to depend on him. At the very least i tell him his future depends on being ready for the next practice and being able to fully participate for the rest of the preseason. The first time he cries "hammy" or some other bs that can't be proven by a doctor i show him the door.

I know we didn't have all our starters, but the D didn't give me confidence. Hopefully more starters will play versus the Lions and they do a better job. To their credit, a questionable PI call and fumbled punt gave them short fields.

Definitely our Special Teams weren't special.

I agree with you here. We had zero push with Pot Roast and Paea in there but then again we had no Kerrigan or Galette. Its like giving an incomplete grade. We really had zero pressure though on a bum like McCown.

wow. overall...I liked what I saw for a first preseason game against a very good defense; lot of starters on the sidelines; lotta new faces in the line-up.

Concerns
- pass rush didn't look much improved; but both Kerrigan and Galette were spectators
- first team secondary looked as confused and ineffective as last season
- run defense didn't look bad...just not great. but the stats tell a different story. Cleveland could not run on us.
- I still think we are weak at the LB level when it comes to pass defense
- STs are improving....but still seems there is going to be at least one "damn it....another breakdown for a long return' evolution every game
- yea...a vet like Roberts shouldn't be making same mistakes as rookies
- agree that Gruden sometimes looks lost in space
- crappy tackling in spots
- TE injuries

Goods
- o-line, QB play
- field goal and punting
- draft class performance
- RB depth
- VERY FEW OF THE DUMB REAR QUARTER PENALTIES THAT HAVE BEEN SO COMMON IN THE NEAR PAST
- team fight and overall athleticism
- secondary depth may be alright

Obviously, the big negative is losing 2 players for the year.

Everything else is workable. Need to see the next 2 games before getting excited, or fretting too much over things.

Except for Roberts. He may yet turn out to be a fine #3or4 receiver. But he flat out SUCKS as a return man.

Portis wasn't very good. He's not a natural. But he could improve. At least he wasn't Emmitt Smiff turrable.

EDIT: Having Cleveland, and Browns, written on the uniforms like they were, was Gawd-awful.

we beat them at:

rushing yards...153 to 45. Morris is clearly the best runner we have. Jones will not be the starter nor should the talk of trading Alfred continue any longer. He has proven he has what it takes.

passing...223 to 154. Roberts and Grant looked good. Garcon had NO reason in the world why he shouldn't have caught that ball even if it was underthrown. Not every pass will be in stride.

The OL looked great. We held when we needed to, Griffin got to stand in a clean pocket for the most part, and there were ZERO interceptions. For game 1 of the preseason it wasnt THAT bad.

sacks...5 to 1 is a great site to see. They didn't sack Griffin at all and even though he took 2 hits that were biggish, he stood tall in a clean pocket for his 2 series and got to deliver good balls.

we lost on fumbles....3 -1

1. We ran the ball well against the first team defense while Morris and Jones looked like they could be a good tandem in the backfield.

2. The team has tried to find a role for Chris Thompson because of his speed but he just isn't doesn't have an NFL position. He failed as a returner and is too fragile to take snaps with the regular offense as a runner.

3. The pass rush wasn't there early but we were missing the 13.5 sacks from Kerrigan and the 11 sacks from Galette. That duo during the regular season should wreak havoc on long yardage downs. Why is McCloughan smart? He lets Orakpo go to TN where he signs a big contract while he acquires a guy in Galette that is younger and has been more productive the past couple of years for a vet minimum deal.

4. I was sure hoping to see more of Griffin. 8 passes for a guy Gruden said last year needs to make major strides to be a functional NFL passer? Unless you are showcasing Cousins for a trade why all the work to the #2 guy?

5. The Redskins need to sign a veteran tight end before the opener. Someone in the 250 plus range that ca block at the point of attack. You aren't going to find any gifted receiving TEs in the cuts but a veteran who can block and play ST usually becomes available as younger draft picks edge some guys out.

6. No one has ever explained why Tress Way can't take over the kickoff duties. Forbath makes kicks to win games under pressure, something a lot of guys can't do despite having a big leg. Gibbs found Steve Cox to kickoff for Mark Moseley, we need to do something similar.

7. You aren't going to see a cohesive secondary until mid season. There were too many personnel changes and recently injuries to expect the backfield to just hum along. That's why getting Kerrigan and Galette back on the field is vital. The front seven is going to have to carry the defense for awhile.


8. I don't know what anyone sees in Compton. He may be able to line up at both LT and RT, but that only means he is a 'versatile' mediocre player. 3 plus years into his career I don't see much upside. He is the 9th lineman on a team with a decent OL and a final cut on s team with a quality OL.

2014 Browns
-25th against the pass
-32nd against the run
-27th in sacks
-24th in scoring

Just in case you were referring to a past Browns team and missed last year. During the game they mentioned that they were the worst defense against the run about 5 times. They do have good players but their stats were horrific last year.

Haven't seen any footage yet but reading the comments here it seems there's good & bad points to take away. Honestly I expected some growing pains and outcome seems about right for the 1st preseason game.

Hard to argue with any of what you've said here.

The showcasing Cousin's trade is a fan and media myth IMHO but the Griffin time is curious to me. I'm of the opinion that Gruden had seen enough and didn't want to get him hurt again. He started to get knocked around a bit in there which I have to believe is going to happen no matter what you do. Cousins took a sack but I thought they moved the pocket around for him moreso than Robert.

When I watch other football I just don't see teams as hapless as us in the secondary. Maybe its just because I'm invested here maybe not. I hope we pull it together before mid season, ooof.

Actually, for a first preseason game, it was pretty clean. When you consider no game planning, for either team, it was a decent show.

The most important thing that happened was losing 2 guys for the year. And, if someone steps up and takes advantage, there's no guarantee either will be back next year. Especially Redd. All we can do is wish them both well, and a speedy, complete recovery.

If you leave Robert in, you've gotta leave all the other starters in too.

Coaches know what they're looking for/at, and they must have seen enough to be satisfied.

I'm not very optimistic after seeing the same old Redskins early this morning. (some would argue - ever) I realize our secondary is beat up and the injuries/suspension there is a complete mess. But Hall is complete garbage and shouldn't even be out there. He's a huge liability and evidently too good to tackle in the preseason. Culliver's PI was questionable given the announcers thought it was offensive PI however, I liked his body slam tackle later in the first. Defense got picked apart like Hazlett never left.

Our vaunted defensive line was a sieve at times. Didn't see the dominating middle of the line that I hoped would at least put some of the other woes on the back burner. Paul's injury and now Redd's injury are very sad but typical stumbles on our long hard rocky road to legitimacy.

Alfred looks like Alfred Morris :eclipsee_Victoria:and Looks like the rookie can help take some pressure and carries off his shoulders. Red zone woes? You don't say? Some day. Roberts probably isn't going anywhere due to his dead money, shocker. But he needs to be deactivated. Give Grant his spot and bring Crowder up when healthy. DO NOT give Chris Thompson the ball on ST ever again. How are we still looking for someone to catch the ball on ST and not fumble it?? HOW? Seems to me we are going to run the ball a lot. I like that but looking at the numbers, we led in running, passing, TOP and got our asses handed to us because of undisciplined play and piss poor special teams.

Good 52 yard field goal, bad every kickoff. Tres Way needs to kickoff or they need to find another specialist.

I'm starting to see points made against Jay Gruden as a head coach more and more. Pettine looked mean, nasty and confident. Gruden looked lost at times, again. Another unforced timeout for Kirk in the 2nd qtr pisses me off more and more every frickin time.

I'm not going to comment much on the QB situation. Lets just say it is what it is and it ain't what I hoped it would be. Its early, maybe too early to say "same old Redskins" but that pretty much what I walked away from this outing thinking to myself.

I pretty much agree with your assessment, except the thought Griffin mostly looked fine despite not getting a lot of help.

I didn't think the OL looked 'great'. Griffin got bull rushed on several plus and the left side of the line totally caved in one play.

Well, last year Gruden didn't have a quarterbacks coach and then admitted after the season he got caught short in re responsibilities.

Griffin only threw a minimum number of times in the preseason last year and started the year very slowly. We could be headed down that road again.

Gruden hasn't built up enough 'creds' in my book not to question things that don't seem to make sense.

I'm not sure any team plays its starting qb more than a quarter in the first preseason game. Gruden said that would be it unless an ongoing drive carried over.
