Random Commanders Thoughts

Hopefully our GM and staff weighed the risk/reward and putting him on waivers against what we already have on the roster and/or hope to add, and made an informed decision not to tie up a roster spot putting him on IR at this time. My guess is some enterprising reporter will ask that very question at some point in the next day or two ...

Yeah, with all the areas we need to upgrade, we simply can't afford the roster spot.

Who knows, the young man may wind up back in the Burgundy & Gold someday.

You like enough to draft a kid in the 6th round but you are going to risk losing him for good so you can bring in a dime-a-dozen journeyman CB from off the street or another team's practice squad? Makes no sense to me. Not the end of the world but it's a blown draft pick now for sure, plain and simple.

Kind of hard to say it's a blown draft pick. When we've got so many needs, can we really afford to carry a 6th CB on the roster? I think it was more an issue of bad luck, followed by us being handcuffed into hoping he ends up slipping through waivers. Breeland is already missing week 1 with a suspension, had he blown his knee and needed to be IR'd, could we afford to go into the season locking up 2 defensive roster spots with guys on IR, both at the same position?

I do agree it's a bad luck situation, but I can't really hold this 'lost draft pick' against the staff.

Some day 2 Texans stuff:

Texans complete second day of practice vs. Redskins in light rain - Ultimate Texans

RICHMOND, Va. – The Texans practiced against the Washington Redskins for a second consecutive day. There was light rainfall that caused temperature to dip to a point where fans and reporters were scrambling for gear to help them warm up.
Coach Bill O’Brien gave nose tackle Vince Wilfork the day off. They were missing injured players like nose tackle Louis Nix III and defensive end Jeoffrey Pagan, among others. The injured players worked out on the side.

Defensive end Jared Crick had a terrific day as a pass rusher. He expects to improve his 3 ½ sack total from last season.

“He gave us a good inside rush last year, and I expect him to do it again,” coach Bill O’Brien said about Crick. “He had another good day of work.”

Quarterbacks Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer weren’t as accurate as the day before, but they still completed a lot of passes.

In a red zone drill late in practice, Hoyer threw a bullet into the back of the end zone, where rookie receiver Jaelen Strong made the catch on a crossing route. As soon as he caught the ball, he was hit by linebacker Martrell Spaight, who drilled Strong with his shoulder but didn’t take him to the ground.

Another rookie receiver, Keith Mumphery, had his best day, He made several impressive catches. He continues to show that he’s a smart route runner, has good hands and is tough.

Cornerback Kareem Jackson couldn’t have done much more on a corner route into the end zone run by Pierre Garcon, who caught a perfectly thrown pass from Robert Griffin III.

Yesterday Cooley basically said this was an injury he had an hurt like hell, but wouldn't structurally get any worse and wouldn't keep someone out of a regular season game.

Nick

Cooley doesn't know WTF he's talkin about. The AC attaches the collar bone to the shoulder, and a sprain can get worse with contact. The longer he doesn't have any impacts to that area the better. It's weekend, and a complete tare is a long rehab. Did my AC in 84.... 9 weeks in a very painful sling. It's what Emmit Smith way back when people were saying he was playing with a "broken shoulder." It took him much longer to heal because they padded and put a restricting brace on him to continue to play. Rest is what it needs, and if it takes 4 weeks, so be it.

perfectly thrown pass from Robert Griffin III.

THATS coming up more and more...the man has touch.

Has anyone heard one word about Clowney? I mean, at all?

There's a feel-good report. Some effective play, and no serious hurts.

Jones appears to be doing well, Reed seems to be doing what we know he can when healthy, WRs are quick, QB has touch, and Grant is all that and more!

But, where is Baker, Knighton, Murphy, etc on defense? No reports on them at all? Weird...

-- While Gruden said that Chris Thompson is really starting to grasp the team’s third-down back role, they used him on the very first play of 11-on-11’s. Thompson, running to his left, hit a hole created by rookie Brandon Scherff, who pulled on the play, and raced up the sideline very quickly. On the next play, Jones barreled over safety Rahim Moore.

-- It doesn’t matter which of the quarterbacks is throwing to Ryan Grant in terms of timing, as he’s got a great rapport with all three. Grant continues to beat defenses with his sharp route running as well. Next for him will be to do the same in the preseason games like he did last year, and carry it over to the regular-season games when given the opportunity.

-- Cornerback Bashaud Breeland, who was carted off one week ago after suffering a painful sprained MCL, was looking good off to the side as he worked on agility drills with the team’s trainers. Breeland is not expected to be available until at least Week 2 of the regular season, but it’s certainly good news to see him responding so well so quickly.

Here are some tweets from practice today.

it's been longer than that, just FYI... they were doing this last Saturday too (Scherff RG, Moses RT)

Chadwiko Menendez ‏@ChadwikoRCC
In OL v DL drills, Scherff just put JJ Watt on his ***. Pure power. Great showing from the kid.

Chadwiko Menendez ‏@ChadwikoRCC
Mitch Carr got the money question about JJ Watts battle with Scherff. Watt semi-dodged the question: "I'll have to watch the tape".

Chadwiko Menendez ‏@ChadwikoRCC
Watt followed it up with "He's a rookie... There's a learning curve but he's doing good".

Charles Robinson ‏@CharlesRobinson
Redskins OT Brandon Scherff thumping Texans JJ Watt in a drill today....will bring a smile to GM Scot McCloughan.

Chadwiko Menendez ‏@ChadwikoRCC
(Robert) had a good day today. His mechanics are better. The team is supporting him. So far so good.

Chadwiko Menendez ‏@ChadwikoRCC
Lauvao looks improved, too. He looks pretty locked in at LG. He hasn't been embarrassed at camp yet.

Chadwiko Menendez ‏@ChadwikoRCC
Matt Jones is as good at pass protection as advertised
He's a 6th OLman when he blocks.

Tarik El-Bashir ‏@TarikCSN
Redskins RB Matt Jones just fired up his teammates when he trucked a Texans cornerback along the sideline. Yeah, Jones is kinda physical.

Lake Lewis Jr ‏@LakeLewis
Continue to be impressed with new look o-line. More than holding their own against Texans front 7.

Stephen Czarda ‏@StephenCzarda
11-on-11 start with Chris Thompson taking it for what quite possible could have been a TD. Set up by a great block by Scherff, still at RG.

Chadwiko Menendez ‏@ChadwikoRCC
And that's the final play of practice. A great showing from the Redskins today. Looked the better team on both sides of the ball.

You guys hear about Aldon Smith release from the 49ers? Speaking of risk/reward types...maybe we should beat the turds to the punch.

Oh yeah...we should swoop him up. He beat us up last year, maybe he can help us now instead!

Former UF WR Quinton Dunbar changes positions

Washington Redskins rookie Quinton Dunbar signed with the team as an undrafted free agent to play wide receiver. However, the 6-foot-2, 195-pound former Florida Gators standout also worked out at cornerback in recent practices. Friday, it appears the switch to the defensive side of the ball is complete with multiple reports stating that Dunbar arrived in a burgundy jersey, which designated for defensive players for the Redskins...

Yeah, started hearing about this tidbit on the radio, the convo immediately lead to guys changing positions and having great careers like B Mitch and Jake.

Dunbar worked with the corners in drills on Thursday, then went through full-team work with the defense on Friday. The Redskins like his length (he’s 6-foot-2) and the fact he once ran the 40-yard dash in 4.29 seconds. But what impressed them was how Dunbar, an undrafted rookie from Florida, fared when blocking the flyers in punt drills.

Nobody mentioned a possible switch to corner, a spot he hadn’t played since high school, before the draft. But, considering the number of injuries Washington has at corner (three of their top four corners sat out of practice Friday because of various issues), Dunbar will receive opportunities.

“He’s got a ways to go with his technique,” Gruden said. “But he’s got the measurable to be a pretty dang good corner.”

Tevin Mitchel's replacement.....and not just for the obvious reason, as another body at CB.
But being a former WR, Dunbar is a "hands guy", to replace Mitchel, the "hands guy" who can catch balls while doing a backflip
