I like him like Riggins. He's funny to hear stories about, you think it would be cool to have a beer with him, but if you look at it objectively from the outside he's kind of a dick.

That's kind of how I view him too. He's got a little Joey T in him too.

Cooley can give his opinion on plays and how things should have worked. What I don't like is that he assumed that if someone wasn't there at a certain time, then they didn't prepare for the game the right way. He doesn't know what they did or didn't work on. He doesn't know what film they studied. Plus, as has been stated in arguments about the QBs, working more doesn't always mean working the right way. They could have been studying what the coaches told them, which was the wrong thing. I'd rather Cooley stick with saying that this guy was fooled on this play and that guy was just beat on that play, etc., instead of trying to decipher who is doing what behind closed doors.

Of the three, Cousins and Griffin still have upside. Colt has reached his peak, and his stint with the Redskins is an attempt to revitalize his career. I don't see him back and he is auditioning for another team essentially. Griffin and Cousins will be back imo. Also believe Gruden will be back as Snyder in my opinion, has learned not to ax a guy too soon. That is what I've been saying that I think a corner was turned in this organization when Shanny was hired. I think Snyder took a step back and giving Allen leeway. I hope I'm right.

Nevertheless, I don't see a whole lot of success with cousins or Griffin given the team put around them. that can't be corrected overnight. No coach brought in here is going to win with this group. Yall can bang on Gruden all you want, he is not exempt from failing to win with a bad team. That is common in the NFL. In fact, most all coaches get fired, all those predicting Gruden will be fired are acting like they know something no one else does. Hello, that is the nature of the beast in the NFL and sorry folks, you don't get to take credit for predicting a coach firing. Doesn't work like that (not directed at you boone.)
 
What pissed me off about the entire segment with Cooley is that he totally gives the coaches a pass. Saying 'These are professionals and they shouldn't need someone to point out trends to them - they should be doing that on their own with film study' is patently ridiculous. What in the eff do we have coaches FOR if not to analyze the opponent, come up with a plan, prepare the players for that plan, and adjust the plan on the fly. I'm not saying our players are getting the job done on defense - but when you see an entire unit play incompetently, and actually regress, that is not just about players. I understand we are talent poor in a number of areas, but even talent poor squads can play a scheme competently. We're not getting crushed on defense because our DBs are a step slower than top tier WRs. We're getting crushed because players have no idea how to play this defense. And when Cooley totally acts as if this isn't a factor, that just smacks of trying to keep in the good graces of his radio program's owner if you ask me.
 
It's the nature of the beast on chronically bad team's anyway. I think most teams show more patience. The Giants have had some terrible seasons with Coughlin (including sustained terrible performances by his starter QB). But they have stayed the course and kept him there and the result has mostly been winning. You would think we could show a little more patience with a guy with zero NFL head coaching experience, but no, we'll probably fire his *** just like every other coach.

Good Job! Cousins has lots of upside, you can bet he will be competing for the starting job next year, if competition is what its all about. And Gruden's actions point to that reality, he wants competition for every position.
 
Boone- To me the "guy with zero NFL head coaching experience" is exactly what makes this different. Coughlin had a resume that aids greatly in being given time during tough seasons.

This job is a CRAZY one. High profile, high pressure, substandard organizational leadership, etc. Gruden is completely over his head for this place. Probably a fun guy to have a beer with (if he doesn't call your wife if you happen to glance in the direction of another female) but woefully unprepared for our shit show.

A major part of coaching evaluation is seeing how a coach handles adversity. Its not evaluating a losing team and blaming the coach or looking for the reasons for failure in the coaches. We don't have to do that, coaches are scrutinized and take the fall because that's the business they are in. What matters is how does the coach turn adversity around, how does he get the team off the mat, how do you turn a loser into a winner. THAT is the entire focus of what constitutes true winner. A Don Shula or Joe Gibbs does not come around every year. The owner is compelled to see what happens when everyone is against you, Snyder must give it a go if he has any faith in his hiring decision. Remember its easy to praise a winner and call them great, but we are seeing that its not all a rose garden in SF. That is a rare example of winning gets you nowhere. I don't want to go down that road, I want to see our coach make a comeback and prove naysayers wrong. If that happens our team will be winners for a long time. And I don't say that because I love Jay Gruden. I am ambivalent, I just want to win and keeping a coach is an investment like keeping a high priced quarterback.

You know what? I think a young Joe Gibbs would fail here. I really do. You may be right about Gruden but I think it's equally likely that no reasonable coach can deal with the abortion that is Redskins leadership. Btw - Coughlin was 4-10 in his first year with Jacksonville. But they didn't fire him, try to run him out of town, subvert him, etc... There are a lot of examples of teams being patient with unsuccesful head coaches early on. The requirement to 'win now' is overblown in most NFL cities.

My problem is, although I haven't liked a lot of what I've seen from Gruden, I actually HATE this team's ownership and front office and for that reason alone, I have to give Gruden at least a little benefit of the doubt.

A young Joe Gibbs did fail here. He started 0-5 his first year before he turned it around. That was 33 years ago with a different owner. If the media was what it is today, he probably would have been run out of town before he could turn it around. I'm not defending Snyder, or Allen, or Gruden. But sometimes, it does take a coach some time to figure it out. I'm trying to give Gruden the benefit of the doubt, but it's getting harder and harder to do so. The other two, have no benefit of the doubt.
 
tr1 - I hear you - but the fact is, we don't know what Gruden has or hasn't done with RG3. For all we know, he's spent 1/2 his head coaching time trying to get Griffin going. We also don't know what Griffin is doing behind the scenes, or how open to Gruden's coaching he has been. I don't like the way Gruden has publically handled the QB situation, but I'm not going to put out categorical criticisms about Gruden's coaching of Griffin when I have no knowledge of what's actually transpired. I would think he would try and continue to work on him until he absolutely feels it isn't going to work. But maybe he's seen enough and in his best estimation, Griffin isn't the guy. At some point, you've hired the coach, you must've had some belief in the coach, you need to let the coach coach.

I guess the way I'd put it is, I'm disappointed in the results I've seen from Gruden's approach to date. But ultimately, I'm going to hold Allen and Snyder accountable for the continued mess and disaster they have turned my beloved franchise into. I'm just not convinced that Gruden is the primary problem here, not yet.

But you're willing to do that with Snyder and Allen. I've seen plenty from this coach that has nothing to do with behind closed doors issues, the guy is in WAY over his head. That bush league fake punt was the icing on the cake for me, he might as well have called a swinging gate. I've seen enough.
