Random Commanders Thoughts

I saw a random tweet yesterday from someone at the paper that shall not be named in which he said. teams have finally figured out they should run two WRs at Amerson because he gets confused on whom to cover. I'm not football expert, but that seems to jive with what you are saying.

He is certainly getting confused. Whats a head scratcher is that on at least two of the blown coverages we were in vanilla cover 3. He had deep outside responsibility. Its a basic coverage, nothing exotic. On the first he got caught looking inside route matching an outside receiver who went to the post (Clark had him) and left Fleener wide open coming from the inside. Thats not THAT complex. On the other he was looking at a receiver running a short route to his side and turned Fleener loose behind him, just cant do that when your in Cover 3 and have deep third. Again pretty basic stuff.

He just seems to struggle with having his eyes in the right place and understanding his coverage rules in zone even if they are pretty basic rules let alone when things get complex or the offense scheme to fool you.

OK, here are my real thoughts on the game and what is going on.

Gruden's benching of RG III - I was against it from the beginning but I understood it. He wanted to see if Colt could come in and provide a spark, get less sacks, not be as hesitant, and run the plays that he called without having to set up specific ones for a QB who hasn't learned his system.

Colt did NOT do that. Yes, he had almost 400 yards passing. But he was sacked 7 times, for all purposes should have thrown an INT, and almost threw one in the EZ again (Roberts stopped it), dumped the ball off, and Morris didn't run well at all.

Griffin threw the ball 19 times for 106
Colt threw 47 times for 392

With RG III - Morris 21 carries for 125 - SF has the #9 rushing defense
With Colt - Morris 17 for carries for 67 - Indy has the #15 rushing defense

Why the sudden drop off for Morris? Is the threat of having to contain Griffin causing the issues and giving Morris space? Is Colt doing a horrible job of handing the ball off?

OR....is Gruden making horrible calls? Up the guy when we clearly have NEVER done that well all year? We needed .5 yards to get a TD and we run the same vanilla play....where was Helu in space on that? Where was Reed on that?

Colt under threw or threw very weak/late/rainbows to players all game. Reed exposed the defense and had a hell of a game, no denying that. Jackson was able to get a few things going...but he was hurt because Colt cant get the ball in front of the WR. He looked like a deer in headlights at times and was sacked 7 times for it.

There was a stat halfway thru the first quarter that almost made me cry.

Redskins total yards - 19
Indianapolis - 21 points

They had more points than we had yards gained!!! How is that even possible with the weapons and "guru" with offense that we supposedly had? Call me drunk, tell me I need fresh air, call it a fluke. But there is a problem in DC and it doesn't start or end with #10.

Lol...so DeSean DIDN'T have to slow down for a ball badly thrown behind him? Wow, you ARE seeing a different game, where can I get that feed? Sorry for the snark, I'm just kidding around. ;)

I included the feed in the video there.

I'm surprised that guy didn't at least get a flag for that. It will be interesting to see if he gets a fine from the league.

I could live with Colt's weak arm, and it's not an issue with me.
Because after seeing RG3 frequently overthrow balls, that are so out of reach they're not catchable - at least Colt's weak underthrows are catchable, as I've seen DJ make adjustments and pull them in for big plays.

not me. crap is crap whether it's RG holding the ball too long or a cast-off every other NFL team already knows is not starting material.

prediction: now that Jeff Fisher has tape.....McCoy is gonna be eaten alive by the Rams. They'll bottle up the short passing game and dare us to pass deep with our vaunted passpro.

No but the injury was. So was a certain ankle dislocation. but that's football. Even if flukes, have a couple injuries and you're "prone".

the injury, sure. I will say that particular injury was a fluke. But if you drive a consistently do something a certain way the odds of it being less of a fluke increase. Colt cant throw the ball over 40 yards in stride...that is just how I feel.

A mantra we have been repeating in this town for the better part of 20 years.

Yes I saw the point you were making but that's not the play he was injured on. He was dinged on it but he came right back in. He didn't need to be carried off the field until he had to adjust to a ball well behind him and knocked that same knee again. I see your point but it's not really relevant to the point it was addressing which was that McCoy has a weak arm and it hurt us yesterday.

well....sadly...especially with DJax, Garcon and Reed.....that's true. It's maddening knowing at least part of the solution is already in place but the rest has been mis-handled atrociously.

Desean got hurt on a cheap shot by the Colts.

It had nothing to do with a ball being overthrown or underthrown.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-s...with-fairly-obvious-cheap-shot-201804907.html

First off, that wasn't a cheap shot. It was bad acting gone awry. Adams tried to draw a penalty and ended up getting Jackson in the leg. If he is guilty of anything, it's impersonating a soccer player.

Second, did the writer of this article even watch the play? Despite the fact he calls a flop a cheap shot, Alfred Morris was nowhere near the play. Yet he says Morris pushed Adams. That was Young that touched him. This hack article sounds like it was written 2nd or 3rd hand information.

also, the great scramble by Colt. First off I want to give him complete and total credit for making that play happen. Hell of a job with his footwork and keeping the play alive.

But did you see the replay where Jackson, Garcon, and Paulsen are just standing there watching it happen? Its like they expected a sack and just gave up on the play. The ONLY reason Paulsen got that TD was because Colt saw him just standing there doing nothing.

That right there lets me know also that the fire is gone from most of this team. Helu, Morris, and Reed at the moment are still trying hard...but it seems like the other guys are just collecting a check.

Chris Chester played like parrot poop yesterday. It's time to see what Long can do.

Yea I keep hearing he's not starting material, but nothing substantial to back it up

Well that shouldn't be a problem, as Jackson is #1 in the league in receptions of 40+ yards, and McCoy has proven he can get it to him, and McCoy actually looks more elusive when it comes to sacks, as evidenced by that insane TD pass he threw to Paulsen, where he wiggled his way out of 3-4 defenders literally flying at him from every direction at the same time.

This team has a serious decision to make about the starting QB going forward.

With top talent needed in other obvious places like the secondary, lines, etc......it's going to hurt if we have to draft another QB in the first round.

With that said, are any of these QBs good enough to really believe they are a long-term solution? Maybe we'll see another game from Kirk before the season's over that will help clear things up.

I totally disagree, we've seen similar plays by Griffin THIS season and had analysts pointing it out. It was a very nice play but nothing Griffin couldn't and hasn't done recently.

sounds like a personal problem to me. you are receiving information selectively. hmmmm...what to repeat

- he's never had a winning season as a starting QB what more do you need than this? the wishful thinking faculties are working over-time for some folks.

- up until the Colts game he never threw more than 2 TDs in any NFL game

- his arm strength was questioned before he was even drafted

- no other team has actively sought his services

he's a journeyman at best and Jay Gruden is...well...lacking in some critical areas. Gruden decides Cousins can't cut it on 5 games. decides Griffin is done after 4 games. and, trust me, Colt McCoy won't even be on the roster by the end of next season. Gruden isn't up to the challenge and neither is his coaching staff. we can get to the lame personnel dept, tour guide GM and singe constant through all this turmoil another time.

of course we have. we saw great passes during the 2012 season.

here's what we haven't seen: Jay Gruden develop ANY NFL QB into a franchise QB. Dalton can't win a pressure game if his life depended upon it. we haven't seen Jay Gruden control his own staff, control the lockerroom, call a decent game, discipline his freaking team....nothing. he's just another Jim Zorn who happens to have a pedigreed family.

gruden doesn't have a GD plan for what he is doing right now. he's covering his own arse cuz his system isn't working FOR ANYONE. this, of course, leads back to the usual starting place - the FO and how the HC decision process was really conducted as opposed to how we think it was orchestrated.
