Random Commanders Thoughts

I'm concerned about Griffin too.

I don't think any realistic fan is comfortable with Griffin right now... nor should they be. He's not blowing doors off and he's absolutely not living up to expectations set by the team, the fans, or himself. As far as I'm concerned he's got 6 games to be part of the solution. The rest of the team needs addressing as well so I cant put ALL the blame on him, but in instances where the other guys haven't let him down, he's still struggled. He has flashes of brilliance, offset by moments of complete disarray. It's time to put up, or shut up as far as I'm concerned. Not ready to sell his farm, but I haven't been sold on him. 2012 was great, but what happened then, isnt there anymore.

That's utter bullshit! Who can blame them? Their teammates, the fans, the coaches - that's who. You're either part of the problem or you are part of the solution. I don't care how talented you are, we'll see who cares about this team and who cares about themselves over the next several weeks. I would honestly rather lose with team guys than win with a bunch of selfish, finger-pointing pricks.

I wasn't referring to them speaking out, or pointing fingers. No one really likes that--unless it's Clinton Portis and then people defend him for some reason. But they choose to apply a different standard here.

I meant who can blame them for being pissed? Neither of these guys want to play on a losing team during their best years in the league. They are frustrated. They want better execution. I'd be much more concerned if they were okay with losing.

One of the DC sports talk guys seems to think that Gruden is just letting Robert get shot down in flames over the next several games. He's not going to change the scheme because he doesn't thiink Griffin is the answer. Or something to that effect.

I'll say... I'm now more than ever bias against this kid because of the tongue out dance swagger after launching himself head first for a first down. Which BTW, he wouldn't need to do if he just made quicker decisions and was more accurate. I have to think that you alter your scheme to be accommodating but no QB is worth running an entirely different scheme. Because there is the need for wholesale changes if/when they get hurt/miss games. I think maybe that's what the former coaching staff was running into. Now I just see Jason Campbell back there with skinnier legs and a more eloquent approach at the mic.

Complete and utter failure dropping back and quickly delivering an accurate pass to make a defense pay for constant pressure. Timid with the ball. Ridiculous amounts of time to make decisions. Failing at what everybody thinks his strong suit is... firing the ball down field to wide open receivers. He's "smart" but evidently not smart enough to slide or read a defense pre snap. He's a "freak athletically" but not so much as to elude a pass rusher while seeing the rest of the field. Pot shots in the media. I don't need any more reasons not to like this guy. I'm out. Utterly and completely out of the RG3 fanclub. Maybe someday he'll put it back together but he's shot. Patience? We had patience with Ramsey, Campbell, Brunell, et al. I'm all out. #2 overall draft pick and a kings ransom of draft picks. You don't trade all that for patience, you trade that for sure fire stud. We were duped. Shanahan realized this and ran for the hills. And got paid to run. Kudos to that prick.

I hope Colt does get a start to show everyone that he, too, will look bad behind that line. We're about to throw away our most talented qb since the 80's because of our half-assed talent evaluators who simply don't value line play.

Colt played in 2 games and with his weak ass arm floating balls that looked like punts he was able to find receivers who were open and not get sacked 5-6 times a game and was 2-0 in his 2 starts. I'm sure you remember, it was only 3 weeks ago that he beat Dallas in Dallas despite his noodle arm and completed 75% of the ducks he threw out there.

If Colt can see and then make plays downfield and get his slow floaters in to receivers arms I don't see why anybody thinks the problem is only on the OL and that WR's aren't there for RG3 to get the ball to. RG3 can get the ball to the receiver in half the time yet still chooses to hold on to it and run around, get sacked, and amaze us with his sub Michael Vick level pocket awareness. 7 points of offense in 2 of 3 starts. We could bring back Colt Brennan and get 7 points a game.

If the coaches think RG3 is the answer and want to give him the rest of the season then I'm all for it and it's possible that he will start seeing all those open receivers but maybe they need to figure out what works for RG3 rather than keep talking about it every week after he looks indecisive on the field.

Colt started 1 game and came in at half time against the Titans, but your point is valid. He appeared to be effective while on the field, including in overtime vs Dallas to lead us to a FG. With what we gave up we have to let Griff sink or swim. We are now 3-7 and seemingly out of any sort of meaningful contention for this season. I'm ok with us riding Griff the remainder of the season to absolutely without a shadow of a doubt, evaluate him and come to a conclusion about our future at that position.

I keep saying the same thing, Al...we need to play this out. We have the RG3 card in hand and it needs to be played. I was not questioning McCoy's abilities as much as the way the team played with him under center. There was fire, determination. You see that with Robert on the field for about one half of the first quarter. He does nothing to advance this team and McCoy did. What is the disconnect because I do not think McCoy is a better QB?

I understand this team is bad...team being the operative word. I have been banging the OL/DL drum since before we drafted Robert. It is how teams win championships! We are poor on both lines.

And I think most fans invested as much as we are understand there is a fundamental flaw in the front office that keeps us in the doldrums.

But the team has nothing in the tank when Robert plays...they did with McCoy. Why?

we're not that far off my man. I simply disagree with the thought they had something in the tank with the other guys. against whom? the Jaguars and Titans. so what. only the Jags game was a decent performance by all concerned. cowturds games are unique and don't fit a profile in my book.

kirk/colt get the ball out faster. no argument. they do so cuz they have less athletic talent and have to. Robert has options/instincts ingrained since his earliest days. he has to come to terms with the notion that that isn't enough in the NFL. this is what it all boils down to. the receivers can get open. can Robert adjust to NFL speeds for his reads and make the right decision more quickly. I don't know. I do know the upside is huge if he does and that this is not a problem most other QBs are immune to. again, I discount all last year given the drama and absolutely putrid play. the guy has really only played 1 season plus a few IMO. he's attempting a major change from what he did his rookie year. it doesn't happen over night. this team is in a classic risk/reward predicament. I vote all in to see if we can make it work. go all out on the o-line and then make your decision. this, IMO, is gonna work well into next year.

the analysis might be different were there top flight QB options on the horizon. I don't see any.

If Gruden had a pair of kid gloves he has ripped them off and thrown them in the trash.

Jeebus, Elephant, can you get out of your rut?

RG3 is better than anything we have on the bench or in the pipeline.

I'm beginning to lean in the direction that Gruden, unlike Gibbs I, is either unwilling or incapable of adapting his offense to his personnel.

Gibbs did, and he became a winner.

Or maybe he still needs a chance to get his personnel in here. These aren't all going to be his guys. There's a couple schools of thought that I think coaches can adapt when taking over a team. He can either adjust his offense to the guys that are here, or he can have a scheme in mind, install that scheme and see which guys are going to be a fit. The latter would speak volumes to why he didnt do more to address certain things prior to the season, since he wanted to give the current players a chance in live fire action within his system. This coming offseason, I'd imagine we see a much different football team coming into camp... There's no way for him to TRULY evaluate the current roster without seeing what they can do within his philosophical gameplan.

Al, we are where we are. I am not advocating trying to replace him now. I am advocating the same thing you are...I have said it twice now. Build something more than we have around him and give him a chance. The difference comes in the outlook...you have the outlook he can get better...I do not. I believe we've seen all we're going to see from him.

As for you discounting last year...that is awfully considerate. You do not discount a QB who "Goes all in" and looks like he did against the Eagles. He should never have seen the field until after the bye last year. He was not "100%"

I am not the one basing my assertions on what happened 2 years ago. And if you'd take the time to read all of what I have said...I have clearly made the same assertion fansince is making. Give him the rest of the year. Give him all of the off-season. Put together the very best OL you can find through draft and FA. Then give him well into the final year of his rookie contract for that OL to come together to see if he has what it takes. I still say he doesn't, but we have to at least let this play out. But we can't give him more time because of what he did 2 years ago, we have to give him the time because he is the investment we've made.

I think we need to use Santana Moss more. Not saying he is one our better WR's, but think the intangible he brings with his leadership would do wonders.

Jay Gruden: Robert Griffin III ?Needs to Worry About Himself, Not Everybody Else? « CBS DC

Looks like Gruden is getting tired of the public nonsense and doesn't care where it's coming from.

Maybe Jay needs to worry about his crapfest oline that is getting his QB killed, and the Defense that couldn't stop a peewee football team. He very quickly is letting this team quit, that is on the Head Coach.

Side note:
I cannot believe the people that are calling for McCoy, and saying we need to groom McCoy for the franchise QB. I understand if you are pissed in the heat of the moment, but the next calling for that? In 22 career games he has started he has 22 td, 21 int, 13 fumbles, and is 7-15. Yep that is what we need

Makes me remember the Todd Collins days.....

Yeah. The main thing I see in that is:
"He just elaborated a little bit too much, and he’ll learn from it.”

It's sad that you can't spell things out for people without being considered selfish.

what was spelled out? What Griffin said?

He elaborated too much. I just used the similar phrasing of "spelled out" instead of "elaborated".

I dont think its so much about him being selfish, as it him needing to shut up and play football. I can't imagine Gruden likes the level of public exposure Griffin has had since he came into the league, and they way Griffin was held out of the public eye while injured is an example of that. Griffin has no place to come out on a presser and reference the coaches needing to look at themselves and get better... come on man, that never ends well.

Just to be clear, I agree that many just need to shut up and play football. There is the expectation for athletes, however, that they must give sound bites. They have microphones shoved in their faces, and have contractual obligations to talk. Shutting up isn't so much an option, and if you have somebody who processes events in a cerebral fashion, what do you expect them to say?

I don't see that sort of thing as being the problem, i guess. The situation is setup for them to fail. You either give no answer coach-speak, or you give a sound bite that will stick around.
