Random Commanders Thoughts

its weird; like our front office knew that Rak was injury prone and would need a back up.

Or they TRULY believed that the Franchise tag was a true audition... and made sure we had a backup plan. It shows me they didn't have a lot of faith in him being here next year. Whether it be injury, performance, or and inflated level of self value, it seems he wasn't a part of the long term plans.

@BurgundyBlog Has a fanbase ever cared less about losing an $11M/yr player in Week 7?

Nope.

I think Murphy and Kerrigan need to switch sides. Got a feeling that it could work out really well.

I'm curious to why they didn't swap them anyways. I mean it seems every other team moves players around to create more confusion & mismatches.

Nothing like Baker lining up at safety or anything but subtle lineups and the like.

or that they didn't care about that the most valuable assets on the team - the QBS - were going to continue to get their arses hammered because the team continues to keep to the decades old belief that outstanding o-linemen can be found in the later rounds.

good decision from a micro pov. TERRIBLE decision from a macro view of things..

When you're down by 10 points with 2:00 to go, it's 4th and 10 at the opposing teams 25 do you go for the FG and lock up the points, or do you risk going for the TD knowing if you miss... you're in a worse spot? Taking the points, big picture, is the smart play.... Drafting Murphy might not be that much different.

They very well could have looked at the board and didnt see a lineman they graded out well enough to take there. If i'm not mistaken... MOSES was graded out to go somewhere before that pick and he plummeted. Maybe there's a few O-linemen coming out in next years draft we like better? Maybe they want to draft 1st round talent at that position, so instead of spending Murphy's pick on someone we confident in, we looked at it from another angle. Thinking 'macro' as you say, it might in fact being the better pick.

except that drafting a player is a long-run decision...not a single event: inappropriate analogy.

they screwed up pure and simple. not one starter from the draft in the higher rounds - that's simply DUMB, DUMB, DUMB...for a team that finished 3-13 the previous season. this team can't afford to sit back and "develop"players.

far as I can tell....the only smart thing this team has done since Shanahan exited stage left was hire Gruden.

Single event deciding the outcome of the game. Drafting a player is a 'single event.' The concept is the same. Thinking big picture whether it be how a play will influence the defensive alignment, to taking the points, to grading and scouting players projecting out for multiple years are all momentary decisions that influence the grand scheme of whatever situation it might be.

perhaps some clarity is needed.

a draft decision projects how a player fits into the scheme and the vision for the team 1,2,3 and so on years down the road.

a friggin field goal...forgotten by the next week...is a single decision with little to impact as the years recede.

the timeframes for the DECISIONS are totally different.

and you are wrong about momentary decisions. why the heck do you think pro teams staff themselves with armies of scouts, jet around to games, visit player workouts, visit the combines, attend all the post-season beauty contest games? there's a lot of money that goes into these decisions. the analysis takes months. there are many more variables to consider than whether or not to send the kicker on the field.

as a decision process...not even remotely close. from a temporal perspective....different worlds.

You're right, there is a lot of research dedicated to player evaluation... which then leads me to my other point. We cant just draft an O-Lineman because he's an O-Lineman.... picking the RIGHT player for the scheme MIGHT be why we didn't draft an O-lineman.

If they know we're going to need to address the position after Rak walks, and there's no viable option on the board, you take the sure points.

how do you know there was no viable option? there is no way on Earth you could know.

sure points? first...once again...bad analogy. how many blocked extra points and field goals by this team in the past two years?!!! it's not a sure thing - not with this team!

definitionally.....how is drafting Murphy equivalent to "sure points"? again...the analogy makes no sense.

a 3-13 team drafted a back-up with its first pick in the draft. no matter how you cut it...that's eff'n stupid beyond belief. it's why they continue to be the doormats of the NFL.

Gruden now realizes the reality of the situation. we'll never know the behind the curtains conversations. but he strikes me as a guy who doesn't like to grab his ankles. here's hoping he is empowered and takes control during the off-season.

by the way....I thought I had made it clear that the draft process was based on an elaborate set of criteria that a lot of time was spent attempting to verify. great FOs position themselves for success. others drop draft positions to acquire "more picks" cuz it "just wasn't there" - a round about way of saying their past maneuvers didn't leave them with many options....or that they simply lack imagination and creativity. other teams seem to do it. it's not impossible!

So far so good with the fan base allowing Gruden a honeymoon season to find his guys. It's been a really miserable stretch of games. Lots of losses only a few wins and none are quality wins. We are a lot better shape now than we were when Zorn took over. The Oline is still a mess. Dallas is enjoying the spotlight on their OLine talent and success this season. This is a copycat league hopefully the Skins front office follows suit.
I wouldn't draft a qb but I'm also unfamiliar how the new rookie contracts for Griffin, Cousins, Morris and Kerrigan play out once the 3yr window passes. I would think Griffin's and Cousins to be really cap friendly. Any thoughts?

Well, why not just trade Orakpo before the draft and save $8 million...we could have still drafted Murphy.

Frankly, keeping Orakpo and franchising him was a mistake...something many of us thought at the time.

So, you're saying trade the player, and hoping there's somebody available to draft to replace him would be the wise move. No chance that somebody could have grabbed Murphy prior to our draft slot, right ? Sure, now it's easy to say... well he was there and we got him, but at the time, it was a crap shoot. There were also many who thought hey, if the kid pans out, we can play hard ball with Rak with contract talks, and have our ass covered for once.

On the plus side, he won't be commanding stupid money next year... or any other...

For those of us who watched Rak's career, it wasn't a crap shoot.

He wasn't worth the money. And, he was an injury waiting to happen. And, we certainly wouldn't have missed his 'production' from this season.

This was a poor decision by Allen.

Just playing devils advocate here... I didn't agree with the Tag and it was absolutely a bad decision. I agree 100% with you BUT... Rak was coming off easily his best season since he was drafted, and from a technical stand point he played better then most of us had ever seen him play. NOBODY could have predicted he would have 1/2 a sack through 7 games. Again, even 4 sacks at this point would be disappointing, but this is monumentally bad.

Drafting Murphy was a bad move even though he's now replacing an injured Rak

Not paying Rak and not drafting Murphy seems to be the only way you'd have been happy. But I doubt you would have been happy with no player over there at all.

No, but it is a question of value. Orakpo wanted to get paid in the range of a Clay Matthews or Von Miller but has never been that kind of dominating presence.

The failure of the Redskins to get VALUE out of their trades, signing and draft picks is the biggest failing over the past 15 years.

Indy, Seattle, Green Bay, etc. get their franchise quarterback in the draft using their own picks. We 'have' to trade three #1 picks and a #2 to select Griffin. Even if Griffin right now was a steady productive quarterback he would not have been worth the cost.

You can go back to the Portis for Bailey trade years ago when the Redskins inexplicably added a #2 pick to the deal that was unwarranted.

Amusing that several years later, Shanahan came here and had to deal with the ramifications of that deal and the one where we gave up picks to move up with Denver to select Jason Campbell :)

Dude..nobody really thought Russell Wilson was going to be this good. Let's stop that now.

Aaron Rodgers is also a different story because he got to sit and mature. He wasn't drafted and thrown in to the fire

Clay is overrated like Rak
Von Miller is on drugs more than on the field

It's all matter of perspective and not just jumping on the cushy negative bandwagon just because it's so easy to.

I think RG3 shouldn't play until after the BYE. Make sure he's 100% healed and then some. There's no rush to not make the playoffs...
