Random Commanders Thoughts

read this comment on PFTMZ and it made me think....

What I don’t get is everyone up in arms about the Redskin name, but nobody mentions the Chiefs in prime time having Christian Okoye beating a drum while the entire crowd does a tomahawk chop… is there some sort of double standard here?

you're right Mike. that said, I think the response would be the Washington name refers directly to Skin color...and we all know that is verbotten in politically correct America.

I really don't want to have to replace all of my jerseys.

I won't be replacing anything. If the name is gone, so am I. I've never lived in the DC area, I'm a New Yorker, that fell in love with a team as a kid. I could easily root for my home town team, or one of the shitty Fl teams I'm surrounded by if my team is erased.
It has nothing to do with the location, it's has always been about the Native American symbolism. I never chose to be the cowboy as a kid.

That being said, I'm part of this community, so I'll always be here to help, but likely active on another teams site.

a man from Africa beating a tom tom, while white people do the tomahawk chant seems like its on par with the word Red Skin. But it could just be that I am not offended by simple shit like that. I actually used to get quite the chuckle when George Jefferson called white people honkies.

After a breathtaking 81-yard touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles — his former team – Washington Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson will have the jersey and gloves that he wore during the game showcased in the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Pro Football Today Room.

Why?

Jackson became only the third player in NFL history – Pro Football Hall of Famer Charlie Joyner and Art Powell being the others – with an 80-yard touchdown catch both for and against a team

lil' tidbit found on the dot com. I'd like to see quite a few more of those catches, don't care against who.

Unfortunately I feel that if this gains ground, it's going to completely cripple the franchise, forcing a change. I don't agree with, nor do I hope it happens, but this is not good.

I'm in agreement that something will happen because of all this. If Dan is smart, he will use his marketing clout to keep the Redskins name, but not in official capacity, then adopt another name that is official and market that through NFL. No one can make him stop using Redskins, regardless of the lack of trademark, and he can continue to satisfy his fan constituency.

If it doesn't go down like this, I can't support a team that is no longer identifiable to me. No name, logo, colors, the players and coaches will change and it won't mean anything then. So I would be done with them. Dan would be justified in moving the team to LA and leaving the name logo behind. What's the difference?

So what would happen if all Redskins fans just refused to stop using the name regardless. They sing the song, they buy and wear Redskins gear, and refuse to use the new name. I could see that catching on and being the biggest protest vote in sports history. There's nothing they could do about it. And I could see the fanbase really becoming quasi-cultlike about it. Just ignore whatever the ultimate politically correct mandate is entirely?

I love the idea, and the gear.... "bootleg" I'm guessing, and being the logo wouldn't be trademarked or sanctioned by the NFL, there's little anybody could do legally.

Dam, I need to start working on a clothing line :)

I'm with ya! you know my opinion: it's all about control.

absolutely!

but this is Washington DC. no disrespect intended to anyone....but inside the beltway are the political types who blow with the winds.

It would be really cool if what's left of our crowd at games just chanted "REDSKINS" over and over throughout all home games all the time forever and ever. That would make me smile for ever and ever. Who could stop it? Nobody. Ever.

well....one tradition better never die: in those unusual games where the Skins score a TD....the crowd better sing the Skins fight song....loud....and proud!

I gotta say, I am almost done with the NFL. Name changes? I am done. It's over.
