Random Commanders Thoughts

No, that would be trying to change the name because of a supposed slur use that never took place. The overreaction to something that sounds bad but in reality never was.

Sorry, but that's a distant second to relocating the team and erasing the history books, completely eradicating the team from memory.

My $.02 (adjusted for stagflation) on the namechange fiasco?

Once again, I'll refer to my standby reference. Etymology does count. A Linguist's Alternative History of 'Redskin' So in answer to those complaining if the term is racist, I'm going to have to say no. If someone used it that way at some point, I'm sorry. It wasn't overwhelmingly accepted as such, wasn't intended as such by the team or fans and hasn't been thought of that way by them, either. But, again, that's just my view to be accepted or dismissed as any see fit.

The whole concept of disparaging the name by the people who are doing it, to me has always seemed kind of backwards anyway. I mean, in the classic comparison of Cowboys and Indians, the Cowboys were viewed as the heros for ages. The same people who are complaining now (and I realize I'm generalizing here, I don't mean every. single. last. complainant) are the ones who view the Indian as the tragi-hero. So you're going to chastise the team that agrees with you and celebrates the majesty of the brave warrior defending his life and people?! Pure non-sense, imo.

Finally - If you are going to insist on the Redskins changing their name, then I'm going to have to insist you get the State of Oklahoma and the Yankees (among others) to change theirs, too.

I'm with Henry...

Anyone else get tired of hearing Charley Casserly on NFLN? That whole crew seems kinda annoying nowadays.

I could take Nicole Zaloumis and Molly Qerim being on every single show on TV, even if I had to turn down the sound.

One of my suggestions, which I think would be really cool, was to name them after a local tribe, similar to what the Seminoles did. A portion of the profits would go to the tribe, and it would be much more noble.

The Washington Powhatan
The Washington Erie
The Washington Susquehannock
The Washington Nanticoke

It is my understanding that a meaningful part of the original argument to rid the Redskins of their name was the use of iconic imagery and references to Native American heritage by those who do not have the 'right' to do so.

The offended group does not like the idea of being a 'mascot' for any organization in anyway shape or form.

The racial slur agenda is just part of the arsenal of contention. Unfortunately, the 'epithet' game is all too easy to buy into because the word redskin is so..... shall we say, obvious.... it actually denotes a color of skin, there are folks that have that color of skin and that makes them 'different' from other folks who don't have that color of skin. Most any word used to differentiate one group of folks from another group is frowned upon nowadays and particularly those referencing the color of skin.

So, does renaming the team to represent a local tribe actually solve the issue or just dampen the outcry down to it's basic roots enough for the 'interested crowd' to feel sated and look elsewhere for the next issue to save us from.

Never even heard those names before, but they sound hot, and I assume that's the reason for your said preference

Yeah that's a cast I could definitely get behind!

Literally ?

I will likely lose all passion for the skins should they do the wrong thing and change the name. I will never spend a dime to support the team if this goes down

They CAN'T change the name....You have to remember that changing the name would then mean a huge number of BGO members would then have to change their username.

Without a 'Burgundy and Gold', there can't very well be a 'Burgundy and Gold Obsession'...

If the Redskins change their name, does BGO even exist or for that matter, any redskins message board?

Most fans will just rationalize the change. But I think there are plenty, Henry and I just being a couple, who will say 'that's enough'. I'm not rooting for some politically correct team of some other name that I didn't grow up loving. And I'm sure as hell not running a website celebrating some generic politically correct version of my team.

^^^ Is there a dislike button?

You can't close the greatest Skins site on the net down.

And all of this talk is premature. They have at least one more year to state a good defense, and to foster some goodwill.

Seeing how one is happening and one never will and is just a fan spouting off in frustration, I'll stick with my stance. The reality trumps the fantasy.

If we change names I'm off the wagon.

But my stuff will be saved because it will be worth money!
