Random Commanders Thoughts

You're building a straw man.

I lean towards changing the name because I wish to be on the right side of history.

There's no denying that the word 'Redskin' has been used as a racial descriptor.

I believe we're moving to a time where racial descriptors of any kind will make everyone uncomfortable. That there will be some throw-back idea of a 'purity' of the races...you know, dangerous stuff.

I've been all over this country, and what I notice most is the racial homogeneity that's taking over. It's a result of folks liking to have sex with others regardless of color or creed.

Clinging to the team name is a losing proposition. Folks don't need to be happy about that, but the name change is coming sooner or later.

you missed the point altogether then. while your Freudian interpretation of racial harmony is..shall we say...a left field idea...the conclusion you draw is..perhaps...not the only one in play. I have many friends from inter-racial marriages.....what you claim is simply false. There is no consistent pattern in how these people end up thinking about racial categories (i.e., in my experience, you are wrong if you believe this somehow drives all parties to some higher standard of tolerance...in many instances...I have seen just the opposite...often one spouse identifies with the political goals and rhetoric of the other spouse...a certain President's mother comes to mind!). truth be told, in my experience, I have found it more common that individuals with differing racial indentities get along as a unit more so in two circumstances: for survival (e.g., the military which demands/requires the individual sublimate personal goals for the group) or shared economic objectives.

the point I have focused on is that in these cases of language control ...there are no standards. the folks pushing hardest for it can not define one either. they can't define what core principles should be and what actions flow from violations of these principles. inevitably they have to rely on legislative fiat or random judges to force their ideas.....or destroying the people they see as villains.

I debated bringing this up since it has highly volatile connotations - I will just say that this notion of "historical inevitability"? it has been used in other contexts. millions have lost their lives dislodging the people whose ideologies embracing this concept temporarily rose to power and control over the lives of all.

The good news is "The Browns" is already taken, so we won't get stuck with that

you know...I've been so busy fighting the language police that I completely missed how this team name really could be offensive!

very clever of you. which, of course, raises two questions: why hasn't it been attacked by the arbiters of goodness? when can we expect it to be attacked?

I have a better idea - let's let the Random Redskins Thoughts thread get back to what it was started for...

Is anyone nervous that desean has already tweaked a hamstring?

Not really. We're almost 3 months away from the regular season. I'm glad if he's going to have a problem, it's this far out...

not an uncommon hiccup for a WR to get, especially in early camp (as long as it isn't a pull or a tear). he's not part of the walking wounded on the sidelines. What, me worry? nah

Yeah..I get that old jinxed feeling inside sometimes. It's a hard habit to shake

I'm telling you - right now - they change the name to anything other than the 'Burgundy and Gold' (which as I've stated previously, I could live with) and I'm done.

Yeah..sticking by a bad coach is ok as long as you have what you rooted for, your grandpa rooted for, etc.

This isn't a bad coach; this is family Sundays changing, garb on the walls all having to be swapped out. The picture my grandpa gave my dad who gave me of Lombardi standing on the sidelines with Sonny is no longer relevant.

No, I'll watch football. That's in my blood. But I'll just watch all as a fan and not root for any team.

You need to compromise a little. What if they change it to the maroon and black? :excitement:

Seriously. You can't even get the colors right?! How didn't he know that even as just a qb coach?

That was the first sign of "aww ****" signs that came like an avalanche

I can admire that spirit but I won't be able to do it.

It would be kind of like my former NASCAR fanhood: I was a diehard Bill Elliott fan. They started out with their Dad, George Elliott and his sons, Dan,Bill and Ernie. Small independant outfit going against all the big teams. Lots of fun.

When Bill retired? Had no one to "root" for. My "team" packed it in and was done. I bet I haven't watched but maybe 15 laps in the last 5 years.

If the Redskins are forced to change their name, it will most likely be the same for me...my professional football spirit killed, because what likely replaces the name is some bastardized version of the name or spirit of the name and who in the hell wants that?

I remember the media asking Johnny Unitas before his death about the records he still holds(at that time) in the Indianapolis Colts' record book and Unitas replied: "I have no records in Indianapolis, I played in Baltimore." Damn straight Johnny!

Same with the Redskins. I could actually hear Riggins,Grimm,Jacoby etc.. making a similar statement in the years following a name change...and they'd be correct in doing so.

Hope it doesn't happen but I'm prepared if it does.

And to reply to Ryman about rationalizing the name change:

im gonna call bullshit on all the guys who say they will quit being fans, because frankly you have stuck with this team through Norval, you stuck through this team with the ol ball coach and you never left then, you wont leave now.

much as I love many of your posts...wanna bet?

the NFL itself has become less and less enduring. parity has ended any sense of long-term identity for most teams. social engineering, too much money, etc, etc, have transformed the game, its people, its masters into big business robbed of much of its original purity and energy.

interesting thought you provoke: what is it...exactly...fans are attached to these days in their allegiance to an NFL team? these teams have become so short-lived (i.e., you no longer have steel curtains, fearsome foursomes, etc.) and the game keeps getting munged from its origins that its hard to pin it down other than "I was born into it".

I'm sensing a need for Henry to weigh in.

Indiana girl to play football at NAIA school Campbellsville - CB; not a Kicker

albeit, I don't actually see anything that says 'she will play' in the article; just the NFL.com headline (please contain your shock...)
Just that she passed her tryout.

this link is from nfl.com: Indiana girl to play football at NAIA school Campbellsville - NFL.com

Shelby Osborne; 5-foot-6, 140-pound 18 year old cornerback.

I was kinda curious how she measured up size in her division so with a little research I found out that she was on the bottom end for an NAIA DB but still a lot closer than I thought -
DB min 5'7"/145# versus WR min 5'6/150#. Granted the average players are noticeably larger but there are ones her size that do play (might just be STs, IDK).

She's probably on the fringe being on the small side but she has a helluva work ethic. I do wish her luck & see the locker door getting nudged a tiny bit more.

brotha Fear: how is this a Redskin random thought? it definitely should be posted at BGO. just saying (as one who has been redirected at times!)

I don't know which post are you referring to ?
regardless, how could anything not qualify as a random thought ?
isn't that the whole point of a random thought thread - that any post or subject is allowed ?
