Random Commanders Thoughts

I don't have the time, it seems like a lot of work, but I think it would be interesting to see how many starters Shanahan kept over the years compared to other coaches whent hey took over a team.

Ones that were successful right away.

I have a feeling they didn't have to replace all by 3 or 4 guy son the roster, but without looking I wont know for sure :(

So, what's the punchline on RGIII? He needs to be baby'd? I like the clip and agree….but what's he saying abt RGIII between the lines?

He's saying that Griffin is a very young millionaire, who needs guidance, and errr...you know....COACHING. Hell - I'm pretty ****ing sure that if the Redskins hired ME to manage Griffin, I could keep him straight. Then again, I'm not a big insecure coaching diva like Mr. Shanahan apparently is...

what QB doesnt need to be coddled?

Brady
Manning
Rivers

all the great ones get special treatment.

A better question would be why an owner, who knows up front that every little damn thing he does is going to be put under a microscope, can't resist the urge to act like a 16 year old fan. Snyder needs to start being part of the solution. He's not been to date. You know how I know? Because save a little glimpse of success once every 4-5 years, we still suck!

Isn't that the shocking thing though?

Shanahan was brought in here to be the head coach and his biggest failure was to coach his most important player...

I mean what the hell are all those years as a coach supposed to be for?!

It just confirms to me that people, at their core, are who they are and that doesn't change. I've seen it all my life. You either are unselfish, well-intentioned, honest, sincere, fair - or you're not. Experience doesn't change it. Age doesn't change it. You are who you are. And I've come to the sad conclusion that Mike Shanahan is a petty man who really only cares about one thing. And it isn't the success of his team.

He's not wrong though. I'm not as... uh... experienced... as Boone, but what I've seen jives with what he's saying. People don't change as much as we want to think they do. Sure, there are exceptions and there are changes for a time, but by and large your personality type stays pretty similar.

At least in my experience.

Modern psychology pretty much agrees with you.

I was ok with the hiring of Shanny. I've been hoping he was the guy to turn things around... 3-4 win seasons aren't situations that put the coaching staff on solid ground. I don't trust him any longer and that has no relevance to whether he should stay. On the other hand I've seen very little that shows me he's well suited to groom a young qb...that is relevant in the media and ownership.

Marty couldn't win playoff games. He could get to 12 or 13 wins but always seemed to lose to lower seeded teams in the postseason.

An article today from Maske indicated Snyder didn't want to pay the coaches $13M to depart.

He hasn't come out and given Shanahan a vote of confidence so what choice does he have?

You bring Shanahan back in 2014 with new coordinators it doesn't change who is making the personnel changes.

Haslett is a mediocre coordinator but you give him Seattle or San Francisco's talent and he will look a lot better.

It's the personnel side where things have really fallen off a cliff.

OK, can ya paraphrase for me. The video will not play. Says corrupt file.

The gist is that the Shanahan-Allen era has been WAY more successful than most characterize it - Sheehan rattles off the # of guys that they've drafted who are still in the NFL and compares it to the previous 10 years. There's no comparison. Basically, Sheehan says that they have done a far better job than any recent staffs in making this a professional franchise and that those that compare them to the Spurrier and Zorn years are just not looking at reality. But Sheehan also says Shanahan's ultimate failure was his inability to guide/lead his young star QB, that he let petty ego and other factors get in the way of leading the most important member of the franchise. I totally agree.

Thing is, I would be okay with Shanahan even with everything that's occurred to date if, over the past 45 days or so, I'd heard him say (and sound like he meant it) that he'd made some mistakes, that Griffin was the QB of the future for the Redskins, that he wanted to continue on (not in response to a question 'Do you want to continue as head coach?', but sincerely and without prompting), that he was the guy to lead this team forward, and that he had a plan because this season was unacceptable and not what he came here to do. I didn't hear or see anything like that kind of leadership. What I heard instead was a bunch of ass-covering, equivocating, passive coach-speak that left me with the distinct impression he'd already quit on the Redskins. That's what turned me against the idea of Shanahan continuing to lead this team.

Shanahan came in and unfortunately made some of the same mistakes others have.

He traded for McNabb whose troubled time here reminds me of Jeff George.

He made some major gaffes on veterans at other spots such as OJ Atogwe and Jammal Brown as well as paying career backup Josh Morgan starters money.

LeRibeus and Jarvis Jenkins as high picks remind me of the misses on Devin Thomas and Taylor Jacobs under Vinny.

Shanahan drafted Kerrigan but Vinny drafted Orakpo and it's questionable how productive Kerrigan is without #98.

Mike's defenses have been as bad here as the Mike Nolan units in 1999 and 2000.

The special teams are worse than they were in the past when you look at the failures of each unit.

The only thing Shanahan has done is keep Snyder in the background.

But he has made a lot of the 'quick fix' moves Snyder was known for.

The McNabb and Griffin trades for high picks and high risk are things I could have seen Snyder and Cerrato do on their own.

Losing 36 million in talent would take most rosters over the cliff.

That's because I tried to be clever and stole the direct link to the MP3 ;)

Boone gave a very good summary of it, but I would encourage you to listen to it.

Sheehan is a smart guy. I honestly think he's the smartest football guy in town. By a long shot. He's also a life long, die hard redskin fan. You can hear it in his voice.

you and i are so on the same page it's creepy at this point.

The team though would have been in better position to be competitive if all those draft picks had not been traded or spent on players that have not stepped up.

If Jarvis Jenkins was killing guys at the line of scrimmage and Josh LeRibeus was on the field protecting the qb from the inside rush on offense, we would be better off, no?

How about if Ryan Kerrigan was a more consistent presence on the pass rush?

How about additional depth from the 2, 3 and 4 picks given up for McNabb and Brown?

People can blame the cap penalty but this team needs to learn how to compete and win with draft picks not veteran free agents.

That's how GB, NY, PITT have won Super Bowls.

While I generally agree with you, a few things do stand out to me. Jenkins had a major injury, and you know as well as I, it often takes two years to come back from it. It's not the staff's fault the LeRibeus showed up way over weight, and completely out of shape. They should have cut his ass then and there, even though he showed promise last season. I have to say, you're one of the only people I've heard with a knock about Kerrigan. Kid was a solid pick, and a keeper in most folks opinion. I see the inconsistencies as a byproduct of having a poor interior line.

hmmm...that doesn't leave much maneuvering room for 90%+ of this board!!!

I kid. I kid.

And disagree. Sometimes it takes reaching the proverbial bend in the road/life altering experience.....but it happens...especially as one gains wisdom.
