The gist is that the Shanahan-Allen era has been WAY more successful than most characterize it - Sheehan rattles off the # of guys that they've drafted who are still in the NFL and compares it to the previous 10 years. There's no comparison. Basically, Sheehan says that they have done a far better job than any recent staffs in making this a professional franchise and that those that compare them to the Spurrier and Zorn years are just not looking at reality. But Sheehan also says Shanahan's ultimate failure was his inability to guide/lead his young star QB, that he let petty ego and other factors get in the way of leading the most important member of the franchise. I totally agree.
Thing is, I would be okay with Shanahan even with everything that's occurred to date if, over the past 45 days or so, I'd heard him say (and sound like he meant it) that he'd made some mistakes, that Griffin was the QB of the future for the Redskins, that he wanted to continue on (not in response to a question 'Do you want to continue as head coach?', but sincerely and without prompting), that he was the guy to lead this team forward, and that he had a plan because this season was unacceptable and not what he came here to do. I didn't hear or see anything like that kind of leadership. What I heard instead was a bunch of ass-covering, equivocating, passive coach-speak that left me with the distinct impression he'd already quit on the Redskins. That's what turned me against the idea of Shanahan continuing to lead this team.
