Random Commanders Thoughts

What Gruden is not doing right now is giving me confidence through his words and media sessions that he is in charge and things are going to get fixed.

He looks confused by what has happened in 2016 and by the failures of some of the people he selected to be coaches and players on his team.

Maybe for him that's a good thing and he can start to re-evaluate how to build a better mousetrap.

With his brother as a sounding board, I am really surprised that Jay has been as lost as he has appeared at times.

Gruden thinks the media guys are a bunch of twats - that's what you're picking up on. He almost always agrees with them or generously humors them. He's not going to give any real answers or indications of what he is thinking and that's what you're hearing now. The one or two times he was *honest* with the media (about Robert Griffin) he got burned in effigy.

I don't care what he says post-game. I saw his face at the end of the game and it looked just like mine did - full of disgust and disappointment. That's enough for me. I get that some view him differently.

1. Well, I'd say, no I don't act like we have NE talent. What I would say is, whatever scale of talent we do have, it underachieved when it mattered most.
2. I didn't say last season was a fluke. But that this season makes me less apt to just dismiss the notion. And yeah, we avoided sandwiching that season by a whopping 1 and a half games. AMAZING!
3. I've anointed no one.
4. Same could be said for useless flowery passing stats.
5. No. Because Gibbs was a proven winner in the NFL. While Gruden is anything but.

we overachieved last year I'd say this year we were right on schedule 8-9 win team.

I think we can get a pretty good guard at that spot. excuse me while I puke.

You mention Gibbs 2 third season.

But remember that Joe Gibbs took over a 6-10 team and went on to win the Super Bowl in his second season as a head coach. Bill Walsh took over a 2-14 San Francisco team and 3 years later had it 13-3 and winning the Super Bowl.

How long was Belichick in New England before they won in 2001? A couple of years.

Pete Carroll wasn't in Seattle for 6 or 7 years before his team beat the Broncos in 2013.

My point is capable head coaches in various eras, whether it was pre or post free agency, have been able to turn around the fortunes of their teams by that second, third season.

Gruden has been here 3 years as we end the 2016 season.

Do I have a problem with bringing him back for 2017 and giving him and Cousins another year (with a better effort by all to build a defense) to show what they can do?

No.

But what I do have a problem with is saying 'well, the coach is ONLY in his third season in the top job, so we shouldn't expect too much out of him' - and then excuse poor clock management, questionable play-calling in critical games, and having the team come out in consecutive home games with little energy or focus :)

Let's keep it real.

We had 1 losing season before Gibbs was hired his first time team was pretty stacked with some vets and good drafts. That draft was one of the best drafts we had also.

The work that Gruden and Scott has done is amazing. Is it perfect no but I'd rather do it this way than they way we have done it in the past.

One thing would be nice to see, and that's for this team to finally re-establish a homefield advantage worthy of a playoff team.

The Cowboys were 7-1 at home this season. The Giants were 7-1 as well. Even the Eagles were 6-2.

So, at 4-4 the Redskins were giving away a lot this season having to go on the road and try and win games to overcome poor performances at FedEx Field.

The Redskins have really never won consistently at the stadium since it opened and it continues to be a nice, warm place for opposing team's fans to come in, have a beer and some nachos and watch their teams exit with the win.

Should be able to get the 2nd or maybe 3rd best of whatever position we aim for. Last couple years of 17's are...

2016 Keanu Neal, S
2015 Arik Armstead, DE
2014 CJ Mosley, LB
2013 Jarvis Jones, LB
2012 Dre Kirkpatrick, CB
2011 Nate Solder, OT
2010 Mike Iupati, G

Couple I know without googling and few not so much.

Why? McVay and Gruden are conjoined twins.

Gruden will still be here. Nothing will change in the play calling department. Hell, for all we know, it could get worse.

Execution is what it takes. Damn near any system will succeed if it is executed properly.

Kirk still doesn't see the whole field particularly well. He locks on to guys that are covered, while someone else is wide open.
Yes, all QB's fail to see open guys. But I think Kirk does it more than a guy 3 years into a system should.

I have been thinking about the scheme that Gruden runs, and I am by no means an offensive coordinator, but it seems to me that if he instituted an h-back into his system, he could see more success. 2 TE sets with an h-back in the backfield leaves a lot of options. I think it could be more productive than bringing in a offensive tackle 12% of the time.

I'm not sure who our current offensive rankings can be credited to honestly. Whether it's McVay, Callahan, Gruden, or a combo of some sorts. Could be wrong but McVay is the gameday playcaller, & that's our biggest issue. Whether it's his hardheadedness, miscommunication or Gruden overriding plays, the guy doesn't "get it" on game day. Zero feel for a consistent running game & some pretty questionable playcalling.

Not sure if our offense has some "tells" or what but it seems predictable to the better ranked defenses. That's also on McVay for having no variation.

Gruden said he and McVay talk between every series about what they want to do next.

They are one and the same.

Excellent observation.

I don't know, because I don't count them, but it seems like the run play we most often use is out of the shotgun. Which is troublesome to begin with when it's your top, or at least one of your top/most used running plays. We already know he, like most of the league now, thinks the fullback is a wasted position. H-back would go a long way to improving the run game, IMHO.

A better left guard wouldn't hurt either.

I think this is evident with the ineffectiveness on 2-minute drills and other times when the play-clock is winding down. I am pretty sure I've seen this kind of thing in Redskin land before, where there is one too many coaches in the playcalling mix. I think it happened with Saunders and Gibbs, actually. In this case, I think both Gruden and McVay want to do the same thing (pass), but then I guess they are busy trying to be smarter than the other guys (especially in the redzone). It just seems like every play is going to be a big surprise.

I also think that this may have played a bit into the need for a timeout, but I could be wrong. I just got this feeling they wanted to make SURE that they got the big plan RIGHT. I think in their minds, if they get the plan RIGHT, there is no stopping them. It's like the defense isn't even on the field anymore, as long as they just get the plan right. Ergo... timeout.

With Jordan Reed a pass receiving TE and susceptible to injury, the Redskins really need to release Niles Paul and either draft or sign as a free agent a bigger TE that can be an in-line blocker and factor at the goal line.

Assuming the Redskins resign Vernon Davis, which appears likely given his ties to McCloughan and his 2016 performance, we really don't need the luxury of a third or fourth TE being primarily a pass receiver.

Our #1 need is better coaching.

Whether it comes from the current staff finally getting their shit together. A few tweaks to the current staff. Or a brand spanking new one.

Better players are certainly a very big need. But having people who know what to do with them is more important.

I like it.

I do wonder if the reason we've not seen something like this is the instability of our running corps and TE situation.

Has Reed managed a whole season yet?

Would we kick up a fuss if we went looking for another RB this draft, one with good pass catching skills?

Or are we happy with FatRob/Thompson/Mack combo?

I like Fat Rob. He was clearly an upgrade to Matt Jones. But as BT has stated, Rob is a real good #2. Would love to find the next David Johnson.
