Random Commanders Thoughts

Question of the day....will Lichtensmeagle weigh enough to anchor down the C position all season?

I'm going with a optimistic no but fingers crossed all the same.

I'm really excited about the Redskins chances of winning the division. I am really impressed with Griffin this off season...I truly believe him to a damn fine citizen as well as a player. He has the physical tools matched with intelligence. He was feeling himself quite a bit after cinching the division crown and a playoff birth...should he have played? Using the benefit hindsight it's easy to say he shouldn't. In reality RG3 and Shannie and son were feeling pretty good about themselves as well. They certainly enjoyed the praise given for signing a backup to Griffin that can win at this level...but they also knew that if RG3 and his gimpy Knee were a huge roll of the dice...they rolled craps. It's over done and gone... A handful of injuries here and there on the roster could derail the whole thing. I'm crossing my fingers on that.

I am pretty positive about the Redskins chances this year. I think shipping Shanahan out of here is going to breathe some fresh air into the lockerroom and that Gruden is uber-positive. That's contagious and I think you're already starting to see it having an effect. I think we've added talent and that Griffin is going to look a lot more like his rookie self that what we saw last year.

His knee is the biggest question mark surrounding this season. I'm still in shock that discussion about his knee isn't all over the tv. People just seem to assume (incorrectly according to statistics) that he'll return to his former level and have a long career.

Personally, I won't be totally shocked if he's benched by the bye week, and out of the league within four years.

Of course I want anything but that, but I'm not confident in him having a long career.

But with or without RG3, I feel great about our next four years.

Even if he blows out the knee, he can still easily have a long productive career. The majority of the QB's in the league have limited mobility / scrambling ability, and they do just dandy. He does have quite the arm, and if guys like Eli and big brother can thrive in the league, there's no reason a one legged Griffin can't.

out of the NFL in 4 years?

Why do you assume that a kid who has always done well in sports and is now looking amazing in his off season workouts is suddenly going to be "out in 4 years"?

I also wonder where you get your "wrong according to stats" when every single stat guy has said "its the 2nd year when they come back to form". That would make it this year.

Jesus - we had a full YEAR of nothing but talk about his knee - and you think folks should be talking about it more? The knee has been repaired. He likely will play with no brace this year. It will never be the same knee, but it's not a career ending injury. Can you even think of a QB who's career was ended by a knee ligament tear? I can't. And I'm willing to bet you that a post-knee repair RG3 is still twice as elusive and dangerous on his feet as any other QB in the NFL. He didn't play poorly last year because of the knee. He played poorly last year because he was rushed back (which was both his fault and the team's. He wasn't fully recovered (who the hell could be with just the offseason to rehab?!). Anyone watching him could see he wasn't ready. Your error is assuming that what we saw last year was the Griffin we'll see from now on. I think you're going to be shocked and he's going to shut up a lot of doom-and-gloomers this year, being able to plant on that leg again and move with confidence. Look at his statistics and the play last year that leads you to predict 'he'll be out of the league in 4 years' was smack dab average NFL QB play Mike.

Where I think that kind of talk is really disrespectful of Griffin's talents is that it implies he is only a capable QB if he can run. That's false. Griffin is a hell of a passer, and an accurate one. He just couldn't plant last year - he had just had surgery. Give the guy a ****ing break before you write his obituary.

I hate to channel Frank Caliendo channeling John Madden, but you could cut off RG3's arms and legs and he'd still be the best torso in football.

And I apologize for the 'volume' of that reply McD5 - but I think that's a pretty inflammatory comment to make without anything to back it up. I have no problem with you making the statement, just understand, it's going to get a reaction if for no other reason than you're telling everyone the Prom Queen has venereal disease. So put on your thick skin :)

Not if his knee affects his throwing motion, causing him to overthrow receivers like last season. Then he would become the next Vince Young. Bouncing from team to team trying to start somewhere.

The good news is that he's been working with his old QB coach, and that our new HC is a quarterback specialist. He also has some great weapons surrounding him. He has every single tool he needs to succeed.

The knee is structurally sound with proper healing and recovery post-surgery. Ask ANY orthopedic surgeon - and they'll tell you, it takes at least a year to fully recover from the kind of surgery RG3 had - likely a bit longer. He couldn't fully plant on it last year - that's what created inaccuracy. To look at an elite athlete 6 months post-surgery, and extrapolate his entire career path based on what you see then - well, I think it's not a well thought out position.

And I can't wait for the season to start - because it's going to be immediately clear that I'm right. I like being right.

Good Lordie, are you this optimistic in your daily life, too?

What are you hearing or reading that is making you think his knee is not sound this far into his post-surgical rehabilitation?

Vince Young...seriously?

seriously...

Vince Young?

Call me crazy, but he hasn't even thrown a single pass in a preseason game yet. It might be too early to say that he's looked amazing. I would expect the team, and everyone around him to say that he looks amazing--and they should for his confidence level.

They also said that the knee brace didn't affect him, and now this year of course, we hear that the knee brace affected him. It's what teams do.

The stat I am referring to is that no NFL player has ever come back from three ACL tears before. Not a single player, and he's already had two of them in his young career.

Also, many researchers believe that like with concussions, a person who has suffered an ACL tear is more likely to suffer more of them.

That if you and he were the same physical size and fitness level, and you both took the same hit, that he'd be more likely to suffer his third ACL tear, than you would be to suffer your first.

I want you to be right badly. Very, very badly.

A recovery like Adrian Peterson is almost unheard of in this league--it's why it was so incredible.

I certainly didn't expect him to recover like Peterson did. I don't believe any NFL player has before.

wait...so you admit he hasn't thrown a single pass in preseason (not sure why you think preseason means anything) but yet you are comparing him to possibly being Vince Young and being out of the league in 4 years?

I'm really shocked that you don't know that coaches won't ever give straight answers and they damn sure wouldn't tip anyone that their star QB isn't 100% with a brace on. Heck, wy don't they just paint a big red X on his knee and a sign that says "free target practice" while they're at it?

Many researchers....you are comparing a brain injury to a ligament injury. I seriously have to wonder if you are just now trying to rile people up with this outlandish style you seem to be displaying here. I have not seen a single solitary person say that Griffin isnt anything BUT super impressive and back to form...if not in better shape than when he came in the league in 2012. So where do you get your information from? I have seen you post "research" and "some believe" but nobody really stating that Griffin is looking like anything but great.

I get that it is the offseason and we are all just bored; but come on, bro. This is silly talk. Comparing him to Vince Young? Saying he will be out of the league in 4 years? Using preseason stats for anything?

Here is a preseason stat: Ryan Leaf was the #1 QB in the league his rookie season after 4 weeks of preseason.

except Willis McGahee, Revis, Danario Alexander, Jamaal Charles, Carson Palmer, and that one guy up in New England...but, I mean, who is he? Tom something or other.

I'm incredibly optimistic, both in real life, and on the team's chances for the next four years. Regardless of who our QB is. I think this coach is going to be fantastic, and I have confidence that he will improve any QB that plays under him.

What are you hearing or reading that is making you think his knee is not sound this far into his post-surgical rehabilitation?

Just science and statistics. For every 1 Adrian Peterson, there are 10 Culpeppers that never return back to form.

Some will say that Randy Moss leaving killed Culpepper's career--and it certainly did hurt him. But if you watched his career after his second ACL, it was like watching a completely different guy. He overthrew everything, and he was done.

And for the record, not surprisingly, he also was reported to look great, and to be 100% healthy again.

Now science has dramatically improved, so I'm not saying that he's Culpepper. But it's also pretty evident that he wasn't Adrian Peterson either. He's probably somewhere in between them.

I'd love to see him get back to 90% of what he was in terms of mobility and speed. And hope that he improves as a pocket passer.
