Random Commanders Thoughts

I didn't bring up Jackson and I assume the scenario is likely something close to that - I was just responding to him being brought up.

i gotcha, but I've also heard backlash from other sources (outside of the board) about him not being there, while it would have been good to be there, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt in this instance.

Im really not arguing that the sky is falling. I'm just saying that I think he'd be better served by shutting his yap, stepping away from the keyboard occasionally, and staying out of the news. We had enough distractions last year to last a decade and his need to be front and center in the media doesn't contribute anything positive to this team. We'll see if his need to be the center of attention is a problem or not down the road.

With you 100%.

On the scale of Big Deal, this one barely registers at all as an isolated incident, and for many people there's no point in even discussing it.

In the context of everything... It's hard to know what to think, but we're all obviously noticing there's something that might be worth thinking about. Maybe.

i have a hard time criticizing Jackson for missing voluntary workouts. let's break it down:

Jackson was on the eagles when he planned his trip
The redskins get to start earlier than the rest of the league with stuff because we have a new coach
Jackson had no idea he'd be on a team that had voluntary workouts this week

Voluntary workouts, according to Cooley, consist of 2-3 hours of simple drills and workouts.

While it certainly doesn't 'look good' for Jackson to miss the first ever get together of his new team after being cut by his former team for, among other reasons, missing meetings and being late... the context of the whole thing is quite a bit different.

Call me when he misses training camp and starts showing up to meetings late during the week once we get into the actual season. Until then - enjoy your vacation Mr Jackson, and come back ready to play :)

Totally agree with you Travis.

He's taking public sideways shots at his former coaches - knowing that's going to raise eyebrows and get attention. Everything he does appears to be about attention. I have been as big a supporter of Griffin as anyone out there. I'm just saying I don't like what I'm seeing and hearing from him. It's fine if everyone else is okay with his comments.

This is part of what I think is overblown. I'm not so sure that was the shot many think it is. I think this kid suffers from his words being read into more than the average Joe. Fair or not that seems to be in play here. All he said was new year, as in slate clean time to move on and approach this as a whole new year and last year is behind us. Shanahan was part of last year but maybe I'm just hopelessly biased FOR the kid because it just seemed liked he was trying to say "last year we sucked and were 3-13, this year is a new fresh start and we're forgetting about last year". Maybe it was a shot but it sure isn't a slam dunk that it was. He also HAS taken a step back from the keyboard and toned down the rah rah public rhetoric. He's been MIA from unsolicited, public comments for a while now. To me this kid isn't going to get any credit until we start with wins again. Fine, that's fair to a degree but I'm not one who is going to have a problem with him acting like a fairly normal twenty something kid in the meantime, especially if his coach swears he's a work ethic freak. Like I said much ado about nothing.

Yeah I saw the logo. My thought was "maybe if I ignore that no one else will notice it because it's really stupid and embarrassing."

Clearly the world doesn't follow my lead. :)

But what Goal said is right. If we win games it doesn't matter. If we lose games it does.

I really hope we start winning games now.

And again i'll ask, what if the timetable of the release was controlled by Adidas and not Griffin?

I'm glad to see someone complaining about this stuff other than just me and fansince62. I was starting to get worried I was being overly ridiculous, and didn't even bother posting about either his twitter sayings, or whatever they are, or his logo yesterday ;)

I don't care what he does in the off season as long as he's not taking shots at the team anymore. But this stuff smacks of insecurity. Some people have tied some of his twitter stuff and announcements to be right after the team makes big announcements having to do with people other than Griffin - the implication being that he does this stuff to regain the spotlight when he feels he's lost it. Not sure I'm willing to go that far, but it generally is a bit weird.

As a fan - we were 3-13 last year and Griffin was a significant part of that. He couldn't even throw the ball the first few weeks and had no business being out there, but Team Griffin made sure to make it impossible for Kirk to start without there being a huge problem. The result was a pretty solid change over in coaching staff.

You'd think he'd keep his mouth shut and realize no one wants to hear this crap when the team is losing. We're a high strung fan base but at the same time you can get away with pretty much anything as long as you're winning; losing, well you can't get away with much. And right now this team is a loser, and will continue to be one for the next 5 months.

Oh well. This isn't a huge deal to me. He's marketing himself and that's fine; as long as it stays in the offseason. But his honeymoon has come to an end and I hope he realizes it. Not very many people are expecting this to be a rebuilding year - a lot are expecting competitive football. Specifically lots of people are expecting him to return to 2012 form (or even better) now that his surgery is behind him.

We'll see... He's an interesting character to watch though, that's for sure.

I'm with ya most of the way - though most of my shots in the past (remember, I proudly number myself among the RGIII homers!) have been technical/mechanics issues. I also agree, per past discussions, that he would have been better served had he not elevated the drama prior to last season and focused instead exclusively on his rehab/pre-season preps. water under the bridge. but recall that that drama was about on the field stuff - specifically, getting back to the field, quicker than common sense suggested was appropriate.

we all seem to forget that even before he was signed all the signals were there: TV appearances, the socks, marketing deals, etc, etc. I have no problems with this. I don't see any evidence that it is disruptive. I also think, in the grand scheme of themes, this is nothing compared to DUIs, smokin the weed, BS theatrics on the field when your team is getting killed, etc, etc. just my opinion....but I believe the real focus ought to be on the putzes last season who couldn't tackle an 80 year old grandma caning her way down the field, tackles who mimic turnstiles every other pass play, etc, etc.

just thinking out loud -> but rec we all focus on fixing the stupid on the field stuff first......then worry about events at the margin.

on one plane I am completely with you. on another, I'm thinking this is the nature of the times: facebook, instagram, twitter, etc. we have a 20 something year old totally immersed in the culture. I happen to think these social media have a pronounced downside...and as shared cultural spaces actually dilute clear thinking, cheapen culture and...yes.....exaggerate "look at me" personality flaws. but, alas, it is what it is. we shouldn't be surprised when...afterall.....kids freshly out of college are gravitating to where THEIR FRIENDS AND PEERS HANG OUT!

so about Jay-Z wearing the "I hate white people" medallion and Beyonce basically endorsing the show while attending a b-ball game the other day....would we better off were Robert to go down that road? it's all relative - just ask Mr E!!!!

Heh it truly is all about perspective. My thoughts as a web designer were..."NICE, that's tight!" Go figure. :)

Ding! Ding! Ding! This man wins the 50 dollar prize! I agree on every point.

Shanahan did a lot on the way out the door to protect his son's reputation by throwing Griffin and the FO under the bus.

I am not surprised there are residual feelings.

Shanahan had Sally Jenkins and Adam Schefter write the narrative to kill Griffin's character.

Those last 3-4 weeks of the season seemed like hunting season on Griffin.

He also asked the Skins' permission...that he had planned the trip and was it okay to do.

Big investment on his part...probably not only dollars but with friends and perhaps family.

This is a 'stretch' to be angry about.

opinions vary!

the cost - relative to what he signed for - is nothing. how much to resked by a week or two?

I know I will not take anything he states seriously for a while.

Mr Me!!!!!

The point is pretty simple: he signed for a nice chunk of change. he's dealing with image issues. he has moved to a new team with a new coach. he could have sent a very symbolic message. he chose not to. how eff'ing stupid can one person be?

Mr Me!!!!!

Like I give a crap.

Guy was a QB on a 3-13 team and didn't even finish the season. If it was Adidas' decision it was still a stupid one. And Griffin is attached to the thing either way. That's what he gets paid for.

Honestly, I don't really care about any of this offseason stuff. But if anyone asks I think the logo is dopey, and given what happened last season a low profile is probably Bob's best PR move. Shrug.

Yep.

Jackson is not some salaried working stiff. He get's paid millions of dollars to catch a ball. He's just been given $16 million guaranteed. You think a $10,000 trip is a big deal to him?

I get it if he cleared this with the team and all that. Maybe it was part of the negotiations ("Hey, btw I've got a trip planned so can I miss the voluntary workouts?" "Sure DeSean!") but given his already shakey image issues this won't help.

Of course, if he has 1200 reception yards and a half-dozen TDs on the way to a division crown nobody will care about this, least of all me.

but you can't hold it against Griffin... he cant tell Adidas that it's stupid to release it after a 3 - 13 season when he's contracted to the endorsement. If Adidas developed it and chose the release date, it's not fair to look at Griffin and be upset about 'offseason stuff' when it's not his doing.

Eh, I disagree. You can blame him. He's part of it and just shirking it off on Addidas is, well, shirking... He didn't have to sign that endorsement, but he did. He could easily interject control over things, but he (as it seems to us) hasn't.

It's also not a stand alone event. All in for week one. The Documentary. Team Griffin interviews. The commercials.

I don't fault a guy for taking advantage of his situation. If anything his marketing skills confirm to me that he's every bit as savvy and smart as we thought when we realized we were going to draft him and started digging into him as a person. But he's responsible for his endorsement deals and what comes of them, and if the public perception is that he's doing a whole more 'talking' than he should be then he shouldn't hide from it.

As Henry said - it's all about the wins. Griffin knows that too. So coming off a 3-13 season being engaged in off season 'look at me' type of deals carries its own set of consequences/ramifications, and I don't for one second think Griffin is unaware of that when he's making these decisions.

For now - Good for him, I hope he maximizes every buck that's out there waiting for him. But when September rolls around he better come ready to play. This fan base has the ability to show a true leader and winner, for the Redskins, a long career that extends far past his playing days. Just ask Sonny, Sam, Cooley, Doc Walker, Harvey, Theisman, and the rest of the many Redskins Greats that are making more money now than they did during their playing days (exaggeration for some, not for others!)

But we're not stupid and we're not blind. We'll run you out of town if you don't produce. Especially if you have the appearance of off season grandiose statements and actions that have sub .500 seasons that follow. Even more so if having you here costs a pretty penny.

I agree with the running out of town, but he signed that contract before/during his rookie season. You cant tell me he was going to look at that and say "i'm only going to fulfill your endorsements when it doesn't make me look bad."

And i'm not trying to say he DIDN'T want his own logo... if Adidas went to any player in the league with the potential to do something that could market you on a similar level of Jordan (not the same in sheer value, but the same in the sense of logo recognition) of course they would do it... regardless of the circumstances. My point was that i dont think HE initiated the logo release this time. I think Adidas was the one pushing for it... not Griffin.

I was more irritated with his ridiculous 'this is to give US a symbol to unite behind' BS which I found really grating more so than a product logo. I root for the Redskins Griffin, not an individual.
