I think what makes the Terry situation a little different is that whispers around him losing a step and/or on the decline of his career actually crept up a couple seasons ago but then last season when he finally had a legitimate QB throwing to him he surged right back into being a top WR in the league. I do think it is fair to ask the question of if that was just coicidental timing that Terry got the benefit of a franchise QB finally throwing him the football just in time for what *could potentially* be the last season or two of elite play from him. The business of football can get messy, but I also understand the perspective from both sides here. Terry has been the consummate professional on & off the field. He had a lot of justifications to complain about what was going on with this organization but unlike some others he always kept that sentiment behind the scenes. All he ever professed to the public was wanting to win and doing his part to the best of his ability to make that happen.

On the other hand, this organization fundamentally changed at all levels a couple offseasons ago and unfortunately Terry McLaurin is a holdover from that previous era, and even if he has a season or two of elite level play left, the brunt of his career is now in the rear-view mirror so if Adam Peters & staff are doing the math, I can see why they are a little iffy on handing out a long term contract for top dollars when they might feel the organization might be in a place that they don't necessarily need to pull that trigger to be competitive or for sustained success going forward.

I think the bigger question to me is if Terry was moved this season, do we feel we don't take a step back with the current WR core (also assuming they might sign any salary cap cuts during the summer) or do you think a trade would need to include getting at least a good (maybe not great) WR as part of the deal because this team is ready to compete for the 'ship NOW?

Is there anyone of the opinion that the front office is actually looking into moving McLaurin rather than extend/offer a new contract? I don't mean in the context of willing to pick up the phone to listen to offers, but actually being on the side of looking to trade as a first option? I personally, don't, but I am just curious what others think. Some of these rumors & commentary will continue to creep up the longer it takes for a resolution to happen, but I think this also has to do with a fanbase that is relatively new to this situation where you have a team with high expectations coming into the season and a pivotal piece of the roster in question due to the business end. If this was five seasons ago, this would probably barely be news because what would it have even really meant to lose a player on those rosters....6 wins instead of 7? McLaurin's contract stand still is really the first of it's kind since the big turn around happened where as a lot of the franchises in the NFL with sustained winning go through this same experience nearly every single offseason.

I think there is no way they trade McLaurin, our WR room already has question marks at the number 3, 4, and 5 spots. Without McLaurin you can make a case where we would have one of the weakest wide receiver rooms in the league. Now if you tell me we can get a Tyreek Hill back in a trade, then I may at least think about it.

Terry will get a new deal eventually, I'm not worried at all about that. I have no idea what Deebo looked like in OTAs in SF but he sure looked thick to me, and running 3/4 speed in a drill makes it hard to tell about his speed.

Reference Deebo, looking at photos and video from the offseason he didnt look like he was in the best of shape to me.....caveat being that I have no idea what he looked like in a t shirt in prior years. So I was a little concerned about him being fit. Even in some of the OTA videos he looked "heavy" and not particularly fast to me. Take all that for what its worth because I have really no idea what context the brief snippets I saw were in.

However....comments from DQ yesterday made me feel much better, when asked what surprised him about some of the vets so far he immediately went to Deebo and commented on how "
fast" he is (this surprised me). He said he knew how hard Deebo is to tackle because thats what he coached against in previous years, but what has surprised him this off season is how fast he is.
The other comment was from Nikki Jhabvala who echoed how good he has looked. She sent a pic to a 49er guy and asked him how Deebo looked, 49er guy said he lookes "great" based on the photo. She went on to say that Deebo is not your skinny wide receiver, never has been, always been "thick" and he looks in shape to her. She sounded really impressed.
All that to say I may have been off, as are many others looking in from afar. Excited to see a motivated Deebo this year.

The DQ interview post mini camp was really good, for those worried about Mcaffrey DQ commented on how much more improved from a route running standpoint he is this year already. Remains to be seen but we will see how that plays out. Interview is worth a watch.

Agree on all of this. I was not concerned about Deebo, I'm on recording as believing he will have a big year. I just made an observation while admitting I had no idea how he is supposed to look by his standards.

Terry is a great story for this team and how he persevered through the tough years.

His stats from last year were solid - the 13 tds were value add.

His total catches, yardage and game in/game out domination of cornerbacks was not where Chase, Lamb and some of the other top WRs are however.

So how much do you pay him?

His last deal put him in Top 5 at age 26.

Nearing 30 is he likely to be a 1300 to 1400 yard receiver with 95-100 catches?

If he wants top pay now those are the numbers he needs to put up over 17 games given what these other guys do.

Terry’s biggest game in Washington in raw numbers is 141 yards in 2023 and his season total in 2024 was 1,096.

Is it likely Terry continues an upward trajectory or has hit a plateau at a very good but not elite level?

Lamb has 107 and 137 catch seasons with 1390 and 1750 yards and he’s only 26.

His worst year in the last 4 was 2024 when he had Cooper Rush throwing the ball on a sub .500 team and he still came up with 101 catches and 1195 yards while playing on a high ankle sprain.

I think Terry is valuable but he is not a $32M a year AAV type performer.

So if a deal gets done this time I think it will be outside the top few salaries at the position where guys like Jefferson, Lamb and Chase are simply better players.

I think the one thing that is rarely mentioned that contributes to our undervaluing Terry is that he has never had a legit #2 threat on the turf at the same time. Nor has he ever had a dominating back or even a top tier TE (Ertz was solid last year but not a difference maker). That has allowed teams to consistently max out coverage schemes to Terry's side. And yet in spite of all that, and the well-documented lack of quality QBing until JD arrived, McLaurin has still produced year after year. That's why he deserves $30 million/year.

I think 2 things can be true.

Terry deserves to be paid

We can be happy that Peters and co. are being prudent with negotiations no matter who they're talking to.

We don't have a delusional set of people running our building anymore. These guys are professionals and they're going to go about things in a professional manor. I don't think this is them playing some level of hard ball to win some sort of negotiation (which we've all seen our FO do in the past), it's about making sure EVERY move is in the best long term interest of the team. Terry's value is very high because of what he brings to the table in all aspects (on field, off field, locker room.. etc). I don't think decision makers who put large values on character guys like Bobby Wagner, Jayden Daniels, Jeremy Reaves, Austin Ekeler, Zach Ertz... are just going to say Terry isn't worth no. 1 money.


IMHO, the 'snagging point' in this (purely speculation) is more around the length of the money, not the $$ figure AAV. Terry isn't stupid, he likely knows this is his last 'big' payday, and so does his camp. Peters and Co. aren't stupid either and they realize Terry is now negotiating his 3rd contract and will turn 30 in September. Historically speaking, a lot of WRs start to regress at this point in their careers. I WANT Peters and co. to be analyzing EVERYTHING, even surrounding our beloved players. They need to be able to understand an objective approach.

I still am confident this is going to get done, don't get me wrong, but I'm also more confident that the team is not simply just 'caving' and OVER-spending simply because he's a fan favorite. Terry deserves to get every possible dollar he can. The team deserves to be meticulous about how they spend their cap. It's the business side of the sport.

I’m not worried about Terry’s contract. This time two years ago, the speculation was that Lamar Jackson would never play for the Ravens again. Last year, Jamar Chase was never going to sign and show up with the Bengals. This happens every offseason and the majority of the time, the superstar gets his contract with his current team. It would be nice for everything to run smoothly and negotiations to be easy, but this is business and this is how these things go.

The other thing to remember is that this time 3 years ago we were having the exact same conversation about... TERRY MCLAURIN.

That year he didnt agree to terms til the final week in June, and the details of the contract made their way out the first week in July. Here's an article talking about it.

This is normal for Terry and his representation. At least as 'normal' as it can be when he's only had to do it 1 other time, with so many limitations being put on rookie pay scales.

Similar to the Deebo Samuels situation, i'm personally going to withold my concern until there is something to be concerned about. If he's not signed by Training Camp, the concern level will go up, but not be a full panic. If he's still holding out into the pre-season and regular season, then I'll be getting excited.

My anxiety however would like to just get it signed and over with... so i understand the anx.
