Random Commanders Thoughts

I think I remember reading that Travis Kelce only had one catch his rookie year, and Chiefs fans were complaining that Reid only drafted him because he had had his brother back in Philly. It's undeniable that first year production out of Luke Mc and our 2nd round TE was sorely lacking, but often it takes until year 3 for receivers to hit their stride.

I think what you’re going to see the coaching staff do with Luke is put him in a spot and let him develop there. They asked him to learn all three positions last year. And he only played WR for 2 years in college.

I think patience with Luke is the key. But I think they need to stick him in a spot and let him master that one spot. I also think they are smart enough to know they need to do that.

It’s a rational, sound idea that you have…but I think the reason he was learning all the WR positions last year is because we in particular thrive off of hurry-up and moving personnel around. He’s not going to see the field if he can’t be trusted to move around the formation in the hurry-up.

I actually don’t think that was his problem anyways, he saw the field a decent amount for a raw rookie imo. His issue is he’s not high priority in the progression and he’s not trusted yet to be exactly where he needs to be and when—due to inexperience and lacking the right “feel” for finding the spot, not due to a lack of knowledge of what he’s “supposed” to do. He wouldn’t even have been on the field if he didn’t understand his assignments in the meeting room. He just needs to develop that rapport with Daniels and earn his way up the progression/decision-making tree when Kliff is designing the plays.

There’s a reason his separation score was good but he wasn’t targeted often. PFF dorks (who don’t know what they’re looking at half the time, don’t know the progression, don’t understand the goal of the playcall, etc.) often think he looks like he’s getting open when he’s not even a primary, secondary, or tertiary read on the play, imo. He’s open when it no longer matters or he’s clearing out space for someone else, and he’s “open” according to PFF because Daniels is already releasing the ball elsewhere. Now, Daniels will gain that Manning/Brady sixth sense to target guys he’s not even supposed to be looking at, if we’re lucky. But not all routes are actually part of the play, even though that’s oversimplifying. And I think that’s a lot of what McCaffrey was trusted with, to put it bluntly. He knew his assignments but isn’t a natural enough route-runner yet to be “the guy” or even close to it in most situations.

That’s my take. There’s plenty of hope for him but I don’t think they’re overloading his plate. He was smart enough to get on the field while learning all the WR spots—if anything they’re meeting him halfway by giving him so many live snaps and looks at different coverages while he’s only really ready to be a cog out there and the play is designed elsewhere.

This is a common take on Luke McCaffery, but it seems off base to me. For one thing, his name is not nothing, it’s a pedigree. He comes from a family of great athletes, including both a father and brother who were All-Pro NFL players, and an Olympic medalist on his mother’s side. I wouldn’t discount that.

His draft position is not nothing either. You don’t give up on a third round draft pick in his second season unless he is a complete bust or you’re changing regimes, neither of which applies here.

I’m not sure what people expected, but he wasn’t so bad. He had a better rookie season than a guy like Dyami Brown, who got four years to prove himself, or a guy like Noah Brown, who most here regard as a safe bet to make the roster.

Maybe you’re right that he won’t ever be a core player, but at least give the guy a chance to play out his rookie contract before you give up on him.
Just commenting that I can’t remember a single flash play for a TD or big play reception that made me stand up and say ‘this guy may be a real player for us’.

I am not rooting against him but I don’t want to discount other receivers chances of making the roster and contributing.

I just want to make sure you’re not pulling some reverse psychology crazy stuff to get me to defend PFF.

Becuase that would be some next level posting strategy there.

:p

I thought that was Josh Harris in the Crystal Palace owners box yesterday, seems he's got some interest in the new FA Cup winners.

Just give me ONE impassioned PFF defense that is admissible in Forum Court and I’ll be able to post it forever 😈

Feels like we are in the death valley of deserts off season, no football news, click bait, throw shit against the wall season and it needs to end and get back to some real football news, run on sentence can't wait for traing camp to get here time of year!

We still have OTAs and mandatory mini camp to go.

Then we will REALLY hit the dog days of the offseason, from mid June until late July when training camp starts.

But we'll weather it.

But, it is nice in a way.

Remember when there was always a real or manufactured controversy about this time every year when we were under the WOS (Worst Owner in Sports) regime? We have a real franchise again! I am happy with boring right now.

I woke up with a nightmare last night. I had a nightmare the Commanders lost to the Eagles 38-3 in the opener.

I was relieved when I realized it had to be a nightmare because the Commanders do not play the Eagles until virtually 2026.

Maybe that was just residuals from losing by 32 in the championship game when we had everything go wrong. No team no year now...that's the past man! lol

It’s because you don’t like the T in a BLT. 😉

One of my favorite joints has a BLT&A...they add avocado.
But then I add cheese and onion, so it becomes a BLTACO.

Been bored as hell lately so I ended up watching this NFL Network show, probably for the 2nd time since it's been out for several years. It's about the top 100 plays of all time. It basically just covers the SB year though.

I couldn't believe that out of all those plays there are only 2 Redskins plays on the list, and one of them was just a goof by the dolphins kicker in the SB.

John Riggins SB run was #20. That is it!

At minimum the Grant INT vs Dallas and a couple others should have made it. Santana Moss in the 14-13 game? Darrell Green punt return vs the Bears or stopping the Vikings from scoring on the last play?

Their list sucked IMO though. Immaculately reception was #1 for a team that wouldn't even make it to the SB but Harrison's 99 yard int return vs Az in the SB is only #7?

Give me a break.

Starting from the point that I fully understand that the current OTAs are contractually voluntary…

Terry I completely understand and trust. Tunsil not so much. Lattimore not at all. Especially from a team building point of view.

It sure would be nice for all of them to at least be at the OTAs even if not participating on the field.

I didn't realize Tunsil and Lattimore were no shows. With Lattimore, I can see him being afraid of tweaking his hammy or wanting more guaranteed money than the current $2mil in his contract. In my eyes, he should be looking to prove his worth for a contract update though! Tunsil should be there.
