The Bills just cut Mitch Morse their 31 year old starting center.

PFF had him rated at #14 at center, with a higher than average grade for pass blocking (10 points lower for run blocking).

The fact the Bills JUST CUT him shows how far away Washington is on the OL.

A guy like Morse could come in and be the best or second best OL on the team immediately.

I am not suggesting we should sign him necessarily at that age, but we literally have NOTHING at the position.

I despise the rewriting of history stuff, but it sounds like the removal of the logo is an unfortunate coincidence. The documentary was made in 2017 before the name change and apparently the scratching off of the logo is because it was about SCABS (vs. real Redskins players) playing the games in a strike season. So in this case, it's not ESPN virtue signaling.
 
The 1987 Redskins would not have made the playoffs and Super Bowl without the 3-0 performance of the 'substitute' players that beat Dallas and NY teams with many veteran players that crossed the picket line.

I remember at the time a number of players were loathe to admit that but the truth is Washington started off 1987 in very slow fashion.

An early loss to Atlanta and a one point victory over the Jets at 17-16 didn't necessarily point to a great season in the making for the club.

Coming out of the strike 6-1 definitely helped.
 
Yeah, that ‘87 Commanders season was interesting and important.
 
That season was one of greatest coaching jobs in NFL history by Gibbs.

The '87 team was nowhere near as good as Gibbs' other Super Bowl teams overall and yet they overcome adversity at the quarterback position with the Jay vs. Doug controversy and the rapid decline that year of George Rogers as the team's primary running back.

The fact the team went on to set new Super Bowl records in several offensive categories with Jay Schroeder, Rogers, etc. OFF the field and putting other players on the field was amazing.

I don't think Tom Landry, Dick Vermeil or Bill Walsh (top coaches in the NFC at the time) would have taken this team with the talent on the roster to the Super Bowl, let alone win it.

It's also possible that Gibbs' own "intangibles" may have factored into that success given the tumult. A strike season means that a coach who may connect with his players in a strong fashion may get more out of his team ultimately. Gibbs had particular strength in coaching and connecting with players. A lot of coaches "connect" but maybe it ends up being a bit more superficial and "means to an end" - but all of us who watched those 80s teams know there was a lot of depth in that team's connection with one another. Made them more fun to watch, win or lose, to be honest.
 
I always love when opposing fans say that the 82 and 87 Championships should have an asterisk by them because they were in strike seasons,thus somehow it was easier to win.

Which I usually reply : if it was that easy, why wasn't Walsh,Landry,Parcells,Noll etc. there?

IMO, that was Joe's greatest feat. Let's see Walsh get a QB out of prison and win a MNF game!

Agreed - we do not have 12 starters penciled in on this roster. So, like Charley, I don't think the answer is to believe we have a 1 year turnaround in store, and bringing in a host of high priced free agents is not the answer. This is going to be a serious rebuild.

Also agreed - the fit is crucial. Ron and Del Rio went out and signed cover corners to play in a zone scheme and then were upset when the players weren't as successful as they had been on their previous teams.

About the quarterback - given Jayden Daniels' pinball numbers at LSU if you are going to put him ahead of Maye perhaps he should be in front of Caleb Williams as well.

But then you can look at the quality of the roster and see that Daniels had a good offensive line and skill players to throw to.

Maye and Williams had far less talent at UNC and USC.

I don't see Maye's receivers and OL being touted as #1 and #2 round draft picks.

Even Penix had Odunze at wide receiver.
 
I think what Charlie championed was the Plan B free agent which was what he excelled at and what made his name. Finding that solid second wave free agent who can start, but isn't necessarily supposed to captain the team.
 
The best teams do their value shopping AFTER the draft when teams have high draft picks coming in and decide to reduce cap exposure by releasing solid vets that can still start.

The other thing good teams do is move quickly when an opportunity presents itself.

Remember a couple of years ago when the Bears put Roquan Smith on the trade block?

I think a lot of us and fans/teams around the league were discussing him but the Ravens moved very quickly to ACT and make the trade and get him in the building.

He is the best interior linebacker in the NFL.

THAT is when spending money on a linebacker is worth it :giggle:
 
It's funny. I don't want Washington to go out and go crazy scooping up all the first tier free agents and yet this is Christmas morning and I keep checking to see if there are any presents under the tree.

The Junkies this AM were discussing all of the ex-Cowboys coming here and one of the announcers (I recognize John Paul and Cakes but not the others) started a discussion about Peters/Quinn making the same mistake Ron Rivera did in depending upon past players and coaches, etc.

No one else agreed with the position on the show but it is another example of the fact you can't please all of the people all of the time.

To compare Armstrong, Fowler and Biadasz to the likes of Kyle Allen, Trai Turner, Andrew Norwell, Efe Obada, etc. is absurd.

Not to mention the 38 year old Thomas Davis who couldn't really get out on the field any longer and was more coach than player.

The ex-Cowboys we signed during this cycle are legitimate contributors. None of them are end of career 35 year olds coming off major injuries (Norwell, Turner). From all reports these players are ready to go from Day 1 and two of them are likely penciled in as immediate starters.

There was also talk of the long snapper, Ott, coming from Seattle via Baltimore, because he is a favorite of Larry Izzo.

Really?

The negative bias here among some media types in DC is so strong that the motivations to bring in a particular long snapper are cause for evaluation and hard analysis? :LOL:

The long snappers here in DC have been awful for some time.

One of the previous long snappers, Cheeseman, is now enrolled at the Culinary Institute in Arlington, Va.
