Wouldn't you think the one not in contention should have more incentive to shake things up? The Bills and Steelers could screw it up by getting rid of their coordinator. If the 'skins got rid of Del Rio (let's say after the Bears loss when they were still in contention... well, at least you're trying to improve. At least you're making a statement that piss poor is not acceptable. I'd say mediocrity, but our defense has been leagues away from being good enough to be called mediocre.

I’m with Ron and those above him. The die has been cast and I don’t want them to win more at this point.

Hell, I’m hoping we can wrestle the last place division schedule away from the NYG.

Harris, as a businessman, who just spent an enormous bundle isn't going back to a name that will limit sponsorship possibilities. I never believed the name or logo was racist. We have facts to back that up, too, but that ship has sailed.
 
I agree. It won’t happen. I just like to pick on Snider for his elementary thoughts and often borrowed info.

Snyder didn’t bail on the name to get the league off his back, he bailed because of money.

Honestly - I'm not sure we even know that. No doubt the money/sponsorships was a huge factor, but I think the league wanted to put the whole 'controversy' in the rear view mirror pretty badly. I do think the one thing Snider said that makes sense is that Snyder probably did get some assurances regarding how the NFL 'investigations' would be handled. I think there would be more NFL executive ousters if that dirty little business ever really came to light in a demonstrable way.

I think as others have said, the 'tomahawk chop' while clearly not very respective of Native Americans, doesn't equate to 'Redskins' which *some* component of society (and probably more than us old-timers want to acknowledge) finds a 'racist' name. Native American extremists may have a problem with 'Chiefs' and native imagery/iconography of any kind, but the name itself is pretty benign. I actually think the day is coming soon where the Chiefs will ask their fanbase to cease with the tomohawk chop (and maybe even try to enforce that ban in the stadium). They almost have to at some point.

But going back to Redskins, I think most smart fans realize that will just rekindle the drama and controversy and most of us have no desire to experience that again. That's not intended as an insult to anyone who wishes we had never changed the name (including yours truly). But in the context of what we've gone through after giving it up, it's exhausting to consider going back to it and what that would mean. Now if they move to something like 'Warriors' or 'Wolves', I'm prepared to defend those names to the death regardless of how many virtue signaling native 'spokespersons' object because of some imagined and offensive linkage to native culture.
 
I agree that the league wanted to put the ‘name controversy‘ behind them but Snyder never showed any indications that he gave a shit and publicly made his pronouncement that he would never change the name.

Then Fred Smith and Dwight Schar individually put the financial pressure on (and probably courted their Fortune 500 buddies to accelerate it).
 
That was before the sexual harassment/workplace controversy started gaining steam and Snyder's whole ownership position started being challenged. I agree the sponsorship withdrawals were probably the biggest factor, but I definitely think it was a 'Ok Goodell, I'll take one for the team but I expect a lot in return' kind of deal.

Maybe my understanding of the timeline is incorrect? The name change commitment was announced in July 2020, the sexual harassment allegations first came to light by WaPo in July 2022.
 
No - that's right. But I think there was already a lot of noise in regards to what was coming. That was the period Snyder was reportedly actively attempting to buy his accusers off and head off what was coming. Possible I'm connecting dots that aren't there but why else would the NFL have handled the Beth Wilkinson report the way it did (no formal report of any kind, breaking promises to the women who testified, etc...) if there wasn't some sort of deal in place with Snyder? Again, maybe I'm way off.
 
Also possible that Snyder made the deal in return for NFL financial help (wasn't that around the same time as him receiving some massive loan - $10 million or in that neighborhood?) because the team's revenues were in the toilet. Either way, I'm just saying I think the league was a lot more involved in the decision to change the name than it just being a couple sponsors departing.

Keeping track of all the shady shit Snyder pulled is a full time job.

Not to beat a dead horse, but…my disagreement is with Snider’s view that Snyder changed the name in order for the league to back off the ‘reports on him’. What reports?

As far as the league burying the Wilkinson report? It see that as nothing more than Park Avenue protecting ‘the shield’.
