Random Commanders Thoughts

I wish the media pool would leave some of this stuff until decisions are actually made. Playing the victim card isn't a very attractive look for Ron imho. Yes - he was in a tough situation with Snyder as owner, just as every other HC we've had in the past 20 years has been.. But he took the job knowing what he was getting into. The 'I got us a QB and changed the culture' stuff just seems a little delusional. If Howell proves to be the guy long-term, the Rivera regime absolutely should get credit. The fact that it took more than a year for Rivera to realize (probably with some prodding from others) that Howell might be a hidden gem is what it is. But that doesn't negate that they were the team that drafted him.

As far as 'changing the culture', I think it's hard not being in the building to know exactly what 'the damn good' culture was really like just prior to Rivera coming in, and what it's like today, how much validity to assign that? While not a Jason Wright fan, I suspect that he and other younger executives who have actually worked for modern organizations and know at least theoretically how those should operate in terms of equality, respect for staff, professional work practices, and diversity, may have had more to do with improving 'the culture', Rivera has conducted himself as a responsible, respectful, and generally competent team leader and deserves kudos for that. But Rivera certainly didn't change the football culture - in terms of creating a winning tradition. On that front he has been more or less a failure.

Anyway, not a fan of publicly putting Rivera on the spot with these types of questions. What are we really expecting him to say? He knows that in all probability, his tenure in DC is coming to an end. I find it especially awkward, and a little unfair, to ask him to address how he feels about that in-season.

100% agree. at this point in he should be talking only about winning the next game. When he gets into the other stuff and shows he knows things like, JDR isn't getting it done, but won't say it out loud. It's a terrible look. He chose loyalty over a guy he brought in that isn't performing, over trying something different to win games. He has nobody but himself to blame now because he holds athletes in their early 20s to a higher level of responsibility than a 60 year old coordinator.

Don't care about putting him in a position with these questions. This isn't a tough media market. He has been doing this long enough to have learned ways of redirecting without putting his foot in his mouth. It's part of the job that I'm sure no HC likes. But some clearly realize putting some practice into it, makes their lives easier.

I wonder if "I got us a QB and changed the culture" translates to, "I did my job as President of the franchise even if I didn't succeed as head coach." in his mind.

All I know is that history is written by the winners. So Ron can memorialize his tenure however he likes, it won’t change the results that will be told by the record book.

Yeah this feels like it should be a part of a conversation 1 on 1... not at a press conference after practice. If you want JP to ask him on a 'coaches show' where they're sitting on camping chairs on the practice field, so be it. Weekday pressers need to be about football unless an actual even circumvents it

Said this in the game thread, but I think it's sarcasm worth repeating...

Thank goodness Ron built a culture and found a quarterback. Who could ask for anything more in year four!

I think Howell had a bad game, but that's to be expected within a young QBs career. I still think there's enough there for him to develop into a real starting QB. He hasn't 'arrived' yet, and I dont think it's fair to believe he had. I hope the rational fans understand that... but also understand that (imho), this performance wasn't enough to write him off either. I think you can say that, and also disconnect Rivera from the excuses. Yes i'm not ready to give up on Howell while still holding Rivera responsible for the fact that we're HERE after 61 games. These are conversations we should be having in year 1 or 2 of a coaching staff.. not year 4.

I am not concerned at all about Howell.

I do think this fanbase needs to understand that it's not realistic to expect a QB to experience growing pains, but still win consistently. There are a lot of QBs, a number of them currently leading the NFL (Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Trevor Lawrence, Jalen Hurts) that have flashed, while their team still lost games, but showed things enough to earn the ability to stay a starter. Howell has shown enough thus far to be in the same conversation as those i mentioned in their first seasons.

Just the ups and downs of a young, promising QB.

Seen Mike Jones on Twitter quick to jump on Sam's game today when he was nowhere to be found on the subject the last three weeks.

To those folks I quote the great Josey Wales: To hell with them...buzzards got eat...same as worms...

At least the Bears lost today. Need that second rounder as high as we can get it.

Serious question: was RR ever a good coach ? I seem to remember him doing some good things at Carolina.
Surely he's a dead man walking now ? A matter when, and not if, he gets the bullet.

Yeah, though his record was never hot. At the least he had great defenses consistently with Carolina

Cam Newton, in his prime, was a QB who represented a serious challenge to opposing defenses. And Carolina's defenses were pretty good over the years. How much or little Rivera deserves credit for any of that, who knows? If we are being real, they had 3 really good seasons of double digit wins and of course the SB appearance. He should probably get a little credit for the NFC East title in DC, caveats notwithstanding.

I don't think his time in DC helps his legacy much.

5 Home games this year

1-4 record

Combined score 166-89

Average score 33-18

Remaining games-

@Dallas
Miami
@Los Angeles Rams (who just beat Seattle)
@NY Jets (possibly with Aaron Rodgers)
San Francisco
Dallas

Washington would be lucky to win 1 more game. Maybe the black uniforms are appropriate.

They should play out of uniform. Hanes t-shirts with their numbers written on with a sharpie. A helmet from a Dick's Sporting Goods Outlet. Pads made from leftover bubble wrap and styrene packing.

Coaches should call plays using a blindfold and a roulette wheel.

We've given Philly a run for their money this season whilst wearing a big underdog tag. You never know, maybe the boys can come up with a win against the odds.

You are not alone brother. Just remember - the franchise cannot be reborn until it is completely blown up. It’s coming.
