Random Commanders Thoughts

To be fair, there’s not a lot Rivera can say that will sound good at this point.
For me, I'd be happy if he said that they made mistakes in playcalling. If he was more blunt about that aspect of things. He has said now for I think 3 or 4 straight games (all losses obviously) that we didn't run enough (I think it's 3, but it should have been 4). In the next game, somehow there's always a messed up excuse for why running wasn't a good idea. In this one it was supposedly because of penalties, but anyone watching the game saw the flow again tilted towards passing unnecessarily, especially when compared to many other teams who are winning with strategies that incorporate more balance and in my opinion, far more unpredictability than what Turner seems to be able to muster.

The guy is simply a horrible playcaller, and this is not being admitted by him or Ron. It's painfully obvious to many; I think I mentioned it before, but the radio personalities have been weirdly protective of Turner. They are finally mentioning the issues in playcalling, including things like going against the defense's strength in many cases, and a lack of creativity/variety in the playcalls.

My main issue with the playcalling is, to put it simply, the ratio of pass to run.
Looking just at the Titans game :
47 Pass plays
12 Run plays
That speaks volumes

* I counted Wentz' rushes as pass plays, because I don't think they were 'designed runs'

From today's Rivera presser:

Media - What's the difference between Washington and the rest of the NFC East?

Rivera - "Quarterback".

Oh Ron...

Sounds like something to read between the lines....

Like the whole spiel about calling up every team in search of one, to taking up all of Wentz's salary at the expense of Scherff and other roster players.

The move for Wentz was not related to anything in improving Washington; it was only to help improve the Colts.

So, despite Rivera's comment, Wentz will continue to start rain or shine.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rivera knows Wentz doesn't have the right mindset; he literally studied Wentz's film to stop Wentz. He literally won the division because of the Wentzing occurring in game 1 of 2020. He also knows the Coryell language and the WCO language are completely different and Wentz would have to hit the books.

It's also another purposeful distraction from the "real crisis" at hand. Get fans to talk about this instead of that matter.

One game is a terrible sample size upon which to base an opinion. Especially a game in which the opposing defense has literally no film upon which to game plan. Backups play very well for a game or two all the time. That doesn’t make them starters. It makes them good backups. This is a very bad take.

No, it's not. Want to know why? Because in a million years Wentz and Howell are not capable of playing as well as Heinicke played in that game.

Great games are actually rare for a QB. And Heinicke has had 3 such games -- twice against Tampa Bay, and the game against Carolina last year. He literally played 3 near perfect games. Wentz will never do that. Neither will Howell.

And Heinicke was also brilliant against the Giants and Falcons at the beginning of last season. Wentz would have lost both of those games as well.

He was third in the league in INTs despite playing in a run-heavy offense where he was 17th in pass attempts. As I said, he’s a gamer and makes good decisions. Sadly his passes sail and when he tries to push into tight spots he gets picked. To complete an even mid-range throw he needs to arc it and throw it too high. His passes are very high and slow. It’s a problem that, six years into his career, probably can’t be fixed.

Meaningless stats. Not all INTs are equal. Two of his INTs were on Hail Mary throws, so big deal. Two or three more of his INTs were in garbage time late in the 4th quarter, when the games were already over. It doesn't matter if a QB throws 10 INTs in garbage time. The game is over, it doesn't matter.

And, again, it's ridiculous to judge ANY QB after one season as a starter. Playing time matters. In fact, it matters more than just about anything for a QB. No legitimate QB plays their best during their first season as a starter.

You're making an egregious mistake focusing on these meaningless stats. Heinicke is the best QB on this team and it's not even close....as the first 5 games of this season have made crystal clear.

He doesn’t have Theismann’s arm. He doesn’t have Murray’s arm. “Not superior” can mean a lot of things.

You have absolutely no way of knowing that. That's nothing more than your opinion.

Arm strength is not the only factor in a QB’s effectiveness, but when it is at the bottom of the spectrum it matters more. I love Heine and I will root for him no matter where he goes, but he doesn’t have the tools to be a long term starter in this league.

Again, you have no way of knowing that about Heinicke's arm strength. It's nothing more than your opinion.

Heinicke is more effective on play action passes than any Washington QB in the past 20 years, as that article that I posted shows. Therefore, his arm strength is obviously good enough to succeed in this league.

And why isn't Wentz going to win 7 games with his awesome arm strength? He's not going to win 4 games.

Heinicke might climb up a learning curve. Wentz does not and cost a few players as well.

Heinicke as a punching bag and then Pickett taking over would have been far better now and for the future.

Yes. I have opinions. Thank you for pointing that out. I can do that too.

Here, let me show you:

in a million years Wentz and Howell are not capable of playing as well as Heinicke played in that game.

That's nothing more than your opinion.

Wentz will never do that. Neither will Howell.

That's nothing more than your opinion.

Wentz would have lost both of those games as well.

That's nothing more than your opinion.

I can do this all day. But let's move on.

Meaningless stats.

See, unless you want to just shout 'that's nothing more than your opinion' back and forth all day, one needs to provide, um ... facts once in awhile. I just provided one.

This would be a salient point except for the fact that all QBs throw Hail Marys, all QBs play in garbage time, all QBs have WRs who tip balls into the hands of waiting DBs. Stats tend to balance these things out over the course of an entire season. Again, the Washingtons were 21st in pass attempts and 10th in rush attempts. They were a rushing team last year. Garbage time and Hail Marys don't mitigate the fact that Heinicke was not asked to be a Franchise Quarterback the way, say Mahomes, Mac Jones, or Joe Burrow were. All QBs who are younger than Heinicke. All threw the ball significantly more and threw fewer INTs. Or Allen and Herbert were, both also younger than Heinicke and who threw 18 and 16 more TDs respectively.

I mean, I was being generous using INTs. If I went straight up passer rating Heinicke drops to 25th, behind such luminaries as Teddy Bridgewater and David Mills.

And, again, it's ridiculous to judge ANY QB after one season as a starter. Playing time matters. In fact, it matters more than just about anything for a QB.. No legitimate QB plays their best during their first season as a starter.

Are you ... being serious now? Just in the past ten years this team has fielded a guy names Robert Griffin III, whose first year starting was his best. I'm sure you've heard of him. After him came a guy named Kirk Cousins, whose best year in four years as a starter here was his first. It happens, especially with older players. Young guys tend to crap the bed as rookies and develop, so yes they will have a rough time early on. Heinicke is 29. He's one year younger than Wentz. How much more time to grow do you think he needs, exactly?

You're making an egregious mistake focusing on these meaningless stats.

You're correct. I should be relying entirely on my iron-clad opinions.

Heinicke is the best QB on this team and it's not even close....as the first 5 games of this season have made crystal clear.

That's nothing more than your opinion.

Heinicke is more effective on play action passes than any Washington QB in the past 20 years, as that article that I posted shows.

Therefore, his arm strength is obviously good enough to succeed in this league.

That article shows stats through the first four games of each season. Didn't you just get through saying one FULL season wasn't a big enough sample size? Now a quarter of a season is a meaningful stat? You're kind of all over the place here. I'll take my full season over your four games of glory, thanks.

And why isn't Wentz going to win 7 games with his awesome arm strength? He's not going to win 4 games.

Where am I in the tank for Wentz? Pull the guy. I don't care. Comparing Heinicke to Wentz is a low, low bar at this point. I'm pretty sure I said the team should see what Howell's got.

But that's nothing more than my opinion.

Problem right now is if you fired Rivera midseason who would you promote? Jack Del Rio? Maybe Matsko (sp)?

The coaching talent is so thin. Solving Rivera solves nothing. He's not the answer, but he's not the problem. The problem is his lieutenants. The problem is he went as safe and familiar as he could even though Carolina had been failing with this same damn group. This wasn't Gibbs bringing back Bugel. This wasn't the Blues Brothers getting the band back together. This was lazy. Hiring Hurney was also lazy. Even if he had been a good choice it speaks of laziness and a lack of imagination.

I said "legitimate QB". And RG III proved himself not to be a legitimate QB.

It's foolish of you to even argue this point. Look at the stats of every great QB throughout NFL history. NONE of them played their best football their first year as a starter. That's indisputable. Experience matters. It matters A LOT.

And that's not true about Cousins. His best year was 2015 or 2016. Cousins played a lot in both 2013 and 2014.

You're correct. I should be relying entirely on my iron-clad opinions.

Well, yeah that's what you've done. It's laughable that you think Wentz or Howell will ever play as well as Heinicke did in those 3 games that I mentioned.

But that's your opinion that they are capable of it.

When there is that much disparity between two QBs -- In this case, Heinicke vs Wentz -- then, no, that pretty much tells the story.

Wentz has never been good at play-action and he will never be remotely as good at it as Heinicke is. Heinicke is a better athlete overall and makes reads quicker than Wentz does.

Therefore, all the whining about Turner's play-calling should focus on the fact that he has a QB (i.e. Wentz) that cannot run half his freaking playbook effectively.

Where am I in the tank for Wentz? Pull the guy. I don't care. Comparing Heinicke to Wentz is a low, low bar at this point. I'm pretty sure I said the team should see what Howell's got.

Just wrong. This team won 6 squeaker games last season. I would argue that Heinicke's stellar play was the reason that Washington won 4 of those games -- against the Giants (first game), Falcons, Bucs, and Panthers. He sure as hell got zero help from the defense against the Giants and Falcons.

I'm confident that Wentz would have lost all 4 of those games. This team would have been 2 - 15 or 3 - 14 last year with Wentz.

In fact, most QBs in the NFL would have been 2 - 15 or 3 - 14 last year on this team. Heinicke is vastly underrated.

Cousin's first year as a starter was 2015. 2016 MAY have been a better year. This year maybe? But let's not pretend the guy suddenly blossomed into some new improved player since his first years. He's pretty much exactly the same guy.

Same with Patrick Mahomes, by the way. Dude threw 50 TDs his first year as a starter. He MIGHT break that this year with an extra game, but otherwise he hasn't come close to matching that again. Russell Wilson, also had his highest QBR ever his rookie year. First year as a starter. Same with Garoppalo. Aaron Rodgers' first year as a starter was a pretty typical year for him. Same with Matt Ryan. Tom Brady hit the ground running. Lamar Jackson, Allen, Herbert, Burrow, Murray, Prescott, Hurts ... none of these guys were/are average looking and then years later developed into awesomeness. That's not as typical as you think. The Giants famously waited four years for Manning to stop being painfully average, and they are doing that with Jones now but .... they're weird. And that doesn't always work. And you don't do that with a 29 year-old. You're not going 'coach up' arm strength. That is what it is. Especially for a guy on the edge of 30.

But hey, don't believe me. This season saw an abundance of QB openings. Teams were desperately scrambling to finds starters this year. In addition to Washington, you know the team that actually knows him best and had him under contract, Atlanta, Carolina, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Seattle, Denver, Pittsburgh ... am I missing anyone? They were all looking for a QB at one point or another. Did anyone offer a trade for Heinicke, a guy with a year's starting experience and a very cap-friendly re-workable contract?

Well, yeah that's what you've done. It's laughable that you think Wentz or Howell will ever play as well as Heinicke did in those 3 games that I mentioned.

Why? Heinicke played well in some games, but he's never been perfect or so gosh darn awesome that No Player is Capable of Matching His Greatness. I mean, Seriously?

Howell is a rookie. Of COURSE he could have an awesome three or four games. That's not a laughable opinion by any stretch of the imagination. LOTS of QBs have an Awesome Few Games. I remember Gus Frerotte's first game ever like it was yesterday. Dude put up 41 points with no offensive line on a terrible 3-13 Redskins team. It was amazing. I lived off the glow of that game for months. You know what, it didn't make the guy Super Special. It was just a good game. Patrick Ramsey had an AMAZING game against the Falcons, the second game of his first year as a starter. He passed for 356 yards and put up 33 points with a terrible 5-11 team who's coach didn't believe in pass protection, defense or running the ball. We loved that kid. It didn't matter. RG3, do I even need to go there again? The guy was amazing for ... hell, an entire season. Doesn't matter.

That's why you look at a bigger picture. Things like ... all the games, physical tools, developmental stage at the player's age ... you can't make personnel decisions because of a couple games. Well, you can, but then you'd suck.

So yes, Howell could absolutely put together a few awesome games too. And you know what? So could Wentz (though I doubt it at this point. But anything is possible).

What Heinicke did in those four games or whatever was wonderful, but it wasn't Career Defining. It was a backup playing well when pressed into service. That's what he's supposed to do and good for him. But, jeez man, you're putting him on a HUGE pedestal for a few good games.

When there is that much disparity between two QBs -- In this case, Heinicke vs Wentz -- then, no, that pretty much tells the story.

Do I think Washington's front office crapped the bed when they traded for Wentz? Absolutely. I said so when they did it. That's not the point.

The point is what does the team do to lock down the QB spot for the future. It's likely not Wentz. And, I hate to tell you, it's likely not Heinicke. The guy had an entire year to audition and didn't win the job. That leaves the rook. Let's see what he can do. If he can't be Super-Awesome for three games during the course of an entire season then we can look for someone else.

In fact, most QBs in the NFL would have been 2 - 15 or 3 - 14 last year on this team. Heinicke is vastly underrated.

Wow. I don't know what to say here.

That's ... uh, nothing more than your opinion.

And, with that, I think I'm really done because ... yikes.

At some point we talk about other players, right?

Robinson/Gibson
Dotson/Terry/Brown
Allen/Payne
Holcomb's great game
Why was Jackson benched?

Seriously...I get it. One side loves Taylor and won't shut up about it even when asked multiple times to create a thread about it. But, every time one of us makes a post about something else it's immediately buried by this same ol song and dance.

Sorry...I'll stop ranting now.

Sorry. Sorry.

I, uh, thought Montez played well. :)

Holcomb had 15 tackles against one of the best RBs in the league. Del Rio should recognize that and stop putting him in coverage

I think the bottom line is a head coach who was a defensive coordinator can’t seem to fix a defense that has run out of excuses.

Second, Carson Wentz is a transitional player and will never show the consistency and ball security needed to lead a team deep into the playoffs.

Rivera picked his own GM, coaches and players. It is all on him to make it work.

This high level of responsibility and pressure is one reason only a couple of coaches like Belichick and Reid are able to make it work.

Most ‘coach-centric’ teams fail.

I think the myth of QB as a magic bullet is also a bit overplayed. Montana with the 49ers was magical. Montana with the Chiefs was pretty good. Peyton was great with Indy, but age and back injuries made him a bum when he won his Superbowls with Denver. A QB needs a system, supporting characters, and the right coaching to maximize their talents. I think I read that Wentz was under duress 60% of the time after 2.5 seconds. It would be hard for any QB to thrive under those conditions.

So sure, better QB play would help, but committing to the run would, too. Using Antonio Gibson as a runner would be smart. If the coaches really don't trust him then bench or cut him. Don't have him out there and call more runs for Wentz, Samuel, and McKissic than your starting running back. In a one score game, we had twelve called run plays. That's just not enough. So, better play calling would also help a lot. On that note, we keep hearing how great our receivers are, but I keep seeing them being covered more than the other team's guys. More importantly, why are our screens so predictable? It seems like every defense knows what we are going to call and run.

We need more than a magic bullet. We need someone who knows how to aim and fire the gun.

Defense has improved vastly as the season has progressed. Offense is killing us.

This last game vs the Titans felt like our first game against Wentz in 20. We swarmed everywhere and everyone got a good hit in.

Wentz played well overall against the Titans. But the offense was, what, 1-11 on 3rd down????!

The fact we had a chance to win it given that stat is incredible.

Hey! A bunch of former panther coaches are now available! Just sayin! 🤣🤣🤣
