Random Commanders Thoughts

Turner isn’t great but he’s also not 100%. I’m in total agreement though on the talent level of our subs. We of all teams should know that the quality of our depth players is probably even more important than that of our starters (since we can’t seem to keep starters on the field for any length of time).

One of the reasons I’m inclined to defend Wentz a bit more than he probably rates is that I’m not sure Tom Brady could play decently behind this line. It’s bad. And it’s not necessarily an argument that we should’ve resigned the guys we let go - but there had to be a better plan be it free agency where we were barely active or in the draft. I love Dotson and Mathis but in retrospect grabbing a couple of OL guys in those spots would look pretty smart about now.

Turner hasn't been here too long, but he also had large chunks of Alex Smith, some Haskins, some Allen. Not saying that's a good thing, but I am just saying I haven't been too amazed by anyone's performance in the offense.

There is only one QB in all of these that I felt we could win with: Alex Smith. With Alex Smith, I felt like Turner was giving him some leeway, it looked like he was allowing him to make changes at the line if I recall, and I haven't seen any QB since do that. I don't know if that is by QB choice or Turner for some reason has restricted everyone but Smith. Not sure, I just haven't seen much of it ever under Turner, except with Smith. Perhaps not coincidentally, he has been the only one I felt confident we could win with consistently. Now, I will caveat: I did (and still do) feel we can with with Heinicke ("get to the playoffs and make some noise" level, which is about all I hope for with this team), but it takes consistently good playcalling that I have never seen with Turner. I am not at all a believer in Turner's ability to develop QBs, so I feel sorry for Howell.

You don’t even need to go to Brady. Look at Matt Stafford. Super Bowl winning QB, best receiver in football, and he is struggling this year as is the whole offense. Why? They can’t protect him. He’s been sacked one less time than Wentz. He’s also forcing throws for INTs as a result. He has 4 TDs and 6 INTs so far. He’s getting beat up and is panicking behind that line. The same is true with the other Super Bowl QB, Burrow. Sacked one less time than Wentz so far this year and their offense hasn’t looked like it did last year. You are correct with Brady though as he has been sacked just 7 times. And I remember at least one strip sack in there. Bottom line is if you can’t protect the guy throwing the ball, he’s going to look bad and the offense will look bad.

Exactly Kel, and that’s not to say Wentz plays lights out with protection, only that it’s very difficult to play well without it.
 
There are so many more glaring problems to overcome and taking it out on Wentz imo is foolish although he has his shortcomings to . He threw for 176 yards but we had 126 penalty yards . The right side of the the o- line has been getting manhandled and while you can see a concerted effort to throw the ball downfield ,what has happened to Logan Thomas of late he’s been virtually non existent . Turnerhas to figure out a way to get him the ball more.. On defense Jackson and Fuller were bad . Letting lamb run wide open is just crazy to me . I’m tired of hearing about communication with our secondary to. These are professionals playing in week 4 I don’t want to hear about that that’s for preseason. They had two opportunities for turnovers in that game and on each play there was a defensive penalty causing us to lose the turnover. Jackson’s play that day was horrible ,as soon as he got beat he was grabbing guys around the neck clear PI’s which demonstrates zero discipline.. There is more then enough blame to go around

I think a lot of coaches obviously understand this, but the differences are:
- "I think my scheme is so tricky (motion/pre-snap/hot read), the defense won't be able to figure it out"
- "Our QB is mobile enough where we can get him moving, the defense won't be able to get to him in time"
and various variations. They underrate the importance of quality on the line. It's not easy though, I think it's just a very complex combination of factors that go into the result. If you are missing too many ingredients, though, you get the 2022 Commanders.
 
I have not been impressed by the coaching at all but…

I think the primary reason that no talent upgrades were made during the off-season is that Snyder, though equity rich, is house poor. With so many seemingly obvious personnel needs at critical positions (OL, LB, CB) and clear avenues to manipulate the cap if you have cash, I believe that the front office and Rivera are operating with one hand tied behind their back.

Even the money that Snyder had to spend on yacht fuel during his summer escapades around the Mediterranean trying to avoid Congress could have helped.
 
Buying a $48 million house on the Potomac will do that to you, Chris. And that is without even considering the new furniture and decorating I'm sure Tonya had to have.
 
Not to beat a dead horse but the current structure we have in our front office where the head coach has final say and our GM is Ron’s yes guy doesn’t seem sound .. letting Kyle walk to me has set this franchise back ten fold . Need to look no further then our D- line which 2 yrs ago was the strength of our team and now we are talking about possibly gietting rid of Payne or Sweat ..We all knew we weren’t going to be able to keep them all but to lose Ioannidis. Settle and either Sweat or Payne in consecutive yrs is not a good thing

Rumors floating around now in articles that Landon Collins signs back with the gnats....and will be used as a linebacker primarily.

Not that we need a lb who could cover any receiver. Nah...were foot with Holcomb and Davis struggling.
 
While I'd probably sign Collins back for a reasonable fee, it wouldn't be to cover a receiver. Any receiver.

I mean, he can't cover me.
 
Don't get too carried away now. Man played safety for many years very well. Yes, he's slowed down but he could definitely cover you.

Yes, Heinicke did all those things but not exactly like you seem to remember. He got bailed out a number of times by great individual efforts on the part of his teammates.

I think the offensive talent comment is a wash at best. Our line has obviously regressed while our WR corp has gotten stronger. The RBs are the same so far but I'm not seeing the same Thomas as before the injury yet, which makes this a net negative.

The defense is playing situationally better but still giving up the same big plays we gave up last year and teams are averaging nearly 27 points a game against us. That isn't good defense no matter how you cut it.

And your refusal to see that play calling impacts performance is astounding. For the record, this isn't something new ST has jumped on to defend Wentz either. He did the same last year with Heinicke.

Just wrong. He's doing homework for the wrong problem.

Heinicke extends plays and makes things happen. Wentz does not and cannot do that. Hence, Washington will win more games with Heinicke as QB than Wentz. It's that freaking simple.

Watch that 4th down play against Carolina in the 4th quarter last year. Heinicke kept that drive alive and Washington kicked the game-winning FG. In a million years, Wentz cannot make that play.

Watch that 10 1/2 minute drive against the Bucs in the 4h quarter last year. Heinicke made two critical throws to keep that drive going and keep Brady off the field. If Wentz is the QB in that game, Washington loses.

What the game-winning play against the Falcons near the beginning of last season. The throw to McKissic near the end of the 4th quarter. In a million years, Wentz cannot make that play. Wentz does not have Henicke's field awareness or football IQ to make that throw.

I'm sorry that all of you were dead wrong about Wentz improving this team. Now, you all just have to suck it up and admit that you were wrong. Don't shoot the messenger for pointing out the obvious.
